About the Performers

Created in 2015 after an epiphany Justin Varnes had while teaching a college Jazz History course, the Jazz Legacy Project combines education with entertainment. Each show features compelling stories about the artists and their influence on American music and culture woven in between authentic performances of popular jazz songs designed to engage casual audiences.

Jazz Legacy Project: Ray Charles

Ray Charles (1930-2004) was an American soul singer, songwriter, and pianist. He is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential musicians of the 20th century and was often referred to by contemporaries as “The Genius.” Among friends and fellow musicians, he preferred being called “Brother Ray.” He pioneered the soul music genre during the 1950s by combining elements of blues, jazz, R&B, and gospel into his music during his time with Atlantic Records. He contributed to the integration of country music, R&B, and pop music during the 60s with his crossover success on ABC Records, notably with his two Modern Sounds albums. With ABC, Charles became one of the first Black musicians to be granted artistic control by a mainstream record company.

The Center for American Civic Leadership and Public Discourse is pleased to present “Forging Democracy: The 1776 South Carolina Constitution and its Enduring Impact,” a special event commemorating the 250th anniversary of the 1776 South Carolina Constitution and its lasting impact on the development of representative government, constitutional law, and civic life in South Carolina and the United States. The discussion will explore the historical significance of South Carolina’s first constitution, the political and legal challenges surrounding its creation during the Revolutionary era, and its influence on the evolution of democratic institutions in the state.

The panel will feature distinguished leaders and scholars from the fields of law, government, and history, including the Honorable Jean Hoefer Toal, the former Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court; Vincent Sheheen, history professor at the University of South Carolina; and William Watkins, constitutional scholar and attorney. The conversation will be moderated by the Honorable Julius N. Richardson of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with leading voices in constitutional law and history as they examine the origins of South Carolina’s constitutional tradition, the broader context of the American Revolution, and the continuing relevance of constitutional principles in modern public life.

This event is sponsored by the Center of American Civic Leadership and Public Discourse within the McCausland College of Arts and the Joseph F. Rice School of Law.

Ilya Shapiro, Senior Fellow and Director of Constitutional Studies at the Manhattan Institute, will discuss the Supreme Court's evolving approach to religious liberty in public education. The discussion will examine recent developments in First Amendment jurisprudence and what the Court's decisions mean for students, families, religious institutions, and public schools.

Mr. Shapiro will be introduced by the Honorable Jay Richardson of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

An author website is the author’s permanent home base: a place to own their story, connect directly with readers, and support the life of their books beyond any single launch, publisher page, or social platform. In collaboration with the Humanities Collaborative, this two-part workshop will show you the basics and then help you build an author website. In Part 1, we will walk through planning stages on how to get started, some strong examples, and basic web design best practices.

Don't forget to also register and join Part 2, Thursday, September 17th, 9:30am-11:30am, IN PERSON to begin building your author site using the Library-licensed WordPress account.

MATLAB is a feature-rich programming language for scientific and numerical data processing for which USC has a university-wide site license. MATLAB also has many application toolkits available for use in diverse fields of research. This workshop will introduce users to the MATLAB programming language, with a focus on reading spreadsheet data into MATLAB, processing the data using matrix operations, writing the processed data to a spreadsheet, and visualizing the data. A MATLAB license and an installed version of MATLAB are recommended but not required to attend this workshop.

ChatGPT started it all less than four years ago. Since then, a lot has changed and evolved. Using the research lifecycle as our functional guide, we will consider five essential areas and mention a tool or tools relevant to those areas:

Coming up with research ideas (brainstorming)?
Locating relevant information resources (search)?
Analyzing and synthesizing gathered information (reading)?
Data analysis and visualization (data processing)?
Producing an end product (writing)?

Beyond our standard GenAI tools (ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Claude, etc.), there now exist numerous GenAI products that can possibly assist along each step of the research process. We will highlight some of those and consider how we can build a GenAI research toolbox. We will also emphasize how we can and should use these GenAI tools in collaboration with our traditional research information tools.
