 bstract:</strong>&#160\;Small GTPases are molecular switches that regula
 te fundamental cellular processes including proliferation\, migration\, 
 and intracellular trafficking. They share a conserved protein fold\, the
  G-domain\, that cycles between functional states dependent on binding t
 o GTP or GDP. Unsurprisingly\, dysregulation of the &#8216\;GTPase cycle
 &#8217\; is frequently associated with human disease. For example\, muta
 nts of K-Ras are identified in ~40% of colorectal cancers\, and these mu
 tants support tumor growth and therapeutic resistance. To stabilize sign
 aling-active conformation of K-Ras\, oncogenic mutations can inhibit GTP
  hydrolysis\, enhance nucleotide exchange\, or both. However\, unlike th
 e inhibition of GTP hydrolysis\, mutation enhanced nucleotide exchange i
 s poorly understood. Beyond cancer\, mutant K-Ras can provide insight in
 to the biochemistry of other small GTPases. For instance\, the oncogenic
  mutant K-RasA59T shows a unique self-phosphorylating activity (i.e. aut
 ophosphorylation). While the alanine-to-threonine mutation of residue 59
  is tumor promoting in K-Ras\, it is a conserved substitution in the G-d
 omain of other superfamily members\, raising the possibility that autoph
 osphorylation is a novel permutation of the GTPase cycle. In this lectur
 e\, we will first discuss our efforts to characterize the nucleotide exc
 hange mechanism(s) of different K-Ras mutants to better understand their
  role in colorectal tumorigenesis. Second\, we will discuss our developm
 ent of a new purification strategy to generate crystallization-grade pro
 tein and its application to interrogate the mechanism of autophosphoryla
 tion and provide evidence that this biochemical reaction is also present
  in the brain enriched small GTPases Diras2 and Rhes. Together\, our pre
 liminary findings support a deeper understanding of GTPase regulation re
 levant to both cancer and neurobiology.</p>

 covery of unusual oxygen isotope compositions in ozone and carbon dioxid
 e by Mauersberger and co-workers and Thiemens and co-workers in the 1980
 s and 1990s has been followed by the challenges of understanding the che
 mical physics of the non-standard kinetic isotope effects on a molecular
  level and how they play out on a global scale\, with the promise of pro
 viding new isotopic tracers of ozone production and transport in the str
 atosphere and the rates of uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide by the b
 iosphere. In this talk\, I will highlight laboratory experiments (includ
 ing crossed molecular beam experiments on O+O<sub>2</sub> and O+CO<sub>2
 </sub> and bulk photochemistry experiments) and stratospheric isotope me
 asurements on air collected by aircraft and balloons that provide new in
 sight into and constraints on the chemical physics of these unusual isot
 ope effects needed to support their growing application to solving probl
 ems in the Earth and environmental sciences across a variety of discipli
 nes.</span></p>

 tyle="font-family: Arial\, sans-serif\;">My laboratory investigates the 
 properties of oncoproteins that drive cancer cell growth\, with a partic
 ular focus on RAS mutations\, which are found in approximately one-third
  of patients with cancer. RAS mutants were historically thought to be &#
 8220\;undruggable&#8221\; and locked in an active state due to impaired 
 GTP hydrolysis. Contrary to this long-held view\, we demonstrated that m
 utant RAS cycles between active and inactive states (Science\, 2016\; Ce
 ll\, 2020)\, establishing that this dynamic transition can be therapeuti
 cally exploited. Building on this conceptual advance\, we identified cel
 lular proteins and pharmacologic approaches that restore mutant RAS GTPa
 se function leading to physiologic inactivation in cancer cells (Science
 \, 2021\; Nature\, 2025). We uncovered multiple therapeutic mechanisms t
 o inactivate oncogenic RAS\, including inhibitors targeting the inactive
  state of diverse KRAS mutants and molecular glues targeting the active 
 state (Nature\, 2023\; Science\, 2023). Translating these discoveries to
  the clinic\, I co-led the first-in-human trial of a KRAS(G12C) inhibito
 r\, culminating in the first FDA-approved RAS-targeted therapy and break
 ing a 40-year drought in RAS therapeutics (NEJM\, 2020). Following this 
 breakthrough we defined mechanisms of resistance to RAS inhibition in pa
 tients and identified rational combination strategies to improve clinica
 l durability and extend therapeutic benefit (Nature\, 2020\; Nature\, 20
 21\; NEJM\, 2025\; Cell\, 2026). Bridging biochemistry\, structural biol
 ogy\, and clinical translation\, these discoveries have advanced our fun
 damental understanding of RAS-driven tumor biology\, transformed a long-
 considered intractable target into a druggable one\, and established the
 rapeutic strategies for patients who previously had limited treatment op
 tions.</span></span></p>

 pulate earth abundant metal oxides presents an important potential techn
 ology to develop sustainable materials with novel properties. These mate
 rials are of interest due to the coordination environments that can be a
 chieved and to the high degree of control over properties that can resul
 t from tailoring the exposed facets and from mixing metal oxides. </span
 >The Richards&#8217\; research group has developed techniques to produce
  a number of new nanoscale metal and metal oxide materials that have dem
 onstrated unique surface activities through controlled faceting as well 
 as novel intercalation strategies that impart robustness.<span style="ms
 o-spacerun: yes\;">&#160\; </span><span style="color: black\;">The initi
 al synthesis of MgO and NiO with (111) facets as the primary surface has
  been followed by recent work utilizing a multiscale characterization pl
 atform to discover the underlying phenomena associated with the electrol
 ytic properties of NiO(111) for Li ion batteries and electrochromics. Jo
 int experimental-theoretical work with collaborators unravelled the pote
 ntial of (111) polar surfaces for carbon capture. Most recently\, in-sit
 u microscopy studies have revealed insights into the NiO active sites an
 d the effects of doping on electrolysis. </span>Here\, recent highlights
  regarding these materials and their applications will be presented. </s

 bstract:</strong> Surface science provides a unique platform for studyin
 g atomically precise catalysts and exploring their dynamically evolving 
 structures and associated activity. These well-defined systems\, often h
 omotopic\, are crucial for validating theoretical methods and uncovering
  structure&#8211\;activity relationships in more complex catalytic envir
 onments. The presented studies focus on Pd and Rh single-atom catalysts 
 supported on the model Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>(001) surface. We comb
 ine high-resolution imaging\, spectroscopic characterization\, reactivit
 y measurements\, and density functional calculations to gain mechanistic
  insights into their structure\, stability\, and reactivity. In my talk
 \, I will first discuss the mechanism of H<sub>2</sub> adsorption and het
 erolytic dissociation on Pd adatoms\, followed by water-assisted hydroge
 n spillover onto the oxide. Next\, I will show how the competing dehydra
 tion and dehydrogenation pathways of formic acid can be used to probe th
 e dynamic activation of Rh single atoms through changes in their local s
 tructural environment. We show that stable Rh atoms incorporated substit
 utionally into octahedral Fe sites are relatively inactive but are trans
 iently converted by surface hydroxyls into highly active Rh adatoms that
  are present only during the reaction. Finally\, I will demonstrate how 
 CO coordination to Rh controls its activity and selectivity during the o
 xidative dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde. We find that both p
 re-adsorbed CO and CO formed through acetaldehyde decomposition remain s
 trongly bound to Rh\, altering its reactivity and suppressing further ac
 etaldehyde decomposition. These studies show that single-atom catalysts 
 evolve under reaction conditions and emphasize the importance of support
  interactions\, reaction intermediates\, and adsorbed ligands in control
 ling their catalytic performance.</p>

 ans-serif\;">Twenty-five years ago a vaccine against amyloid was propose
 d as a treatment for Alzheimer&#8217\;s. Our research team felt this wou
 ld provoke an inflammatory response and cause premature memory loss. We 
 immediately tested the vaccine in our new mouse model that had memory de
 ficits at 12 mo. To our surprise\, not only did the vaccine not cause pr
 emature memory loss\, it actually prevented memory loss as the mice aged
 . Subsequent work found amyloid immunotherapy rapidly removed existing p
 laques from aged mice\, but caused microbleeds in the brain.<span style=
 "mso-spacerun: yes\;">&#160\; </span>This presaged both the success of a
 myloid immunotherapy in humans 20 years later\, and also the major side 
 effects\, called ARIA. Immune involvement in Alzheimer&#8217\;s patholog
 y has a complex nature and can be both beneficial and detrimental. Our m
 ore recent work identifies patterns of immune activation that appear to 
 bias in favor of beneficial aspects. This lecture will cover both the hi
 storical aspects of immune activation and more recent work uncovering si
 gnatures that may provide additional relief to people living with Alzhei
 mer&#8217\;s.</span></p>

 bstract:</strong>&#160\;<span style="font-size: 12pt\; font-family: aria
 l\, helvetica\, sans-serif\;">Point-of-need (PON) technologies have been
  a useful tool in medical and environmental diagnostics for decades with
  the handheld glucometer as a leading example. While significant advance
 ments have been made\, a major conundrum in many PON systems has been th
 e tradeoff between assay performance (sensitivity\, specificity\, LOD\, 
 etc.) and ease of use. The simplest diagnostics require 1&#8211\;2 user 
 steps to achieve a result but lack the ability to detect low analyte lev
 els. Increasing sensitivity to make tests useful at lower analyte concen
 trations would necessitate either added user steps or a significant incr
 ease in cost. Capillary-flow microfluidic devices have received signific
 ant attention as a tool to address current shortcomings in both medical 
 and environmental testing because they are inexpensive\, easy to use\, a
 nd can perform a wide range of chemical and biochemical assays. Our grou
 p at Colorado State University has reported capillary-flow driven microf
 luidic devices combined with colorimetric and electrochemical detection 
 that use channels formed using laser patterning in polyester films and d
 ouble-sided adhesive combined with paper-based pumps and reagent storage
  systems. Building on these platforms\, we have developed low-cost devic
 es for environmental analysis\, including paper- and polymer-based syste
 ms for detecting heavy metals\, nutrient\, and organic pollutants water 
 samples as part of ongoing collaborations in environmental and occupatio
 nal exposure assessment. These devices have been used to quantify metals
  and organics pollutants using simple colorimetric detection\, demonstra
 ting how the same core PON architecture can be adapted for both exposure
  monitoring and field-deployable water testing. Next\, electrochemical d
 etection for capillary flow devices will be discussed. We have demonstra
 ted a range of applications of this platform from detecting viral infect
 ions to chronic disease monitoring. Our initial work in this field relie
 d on screen-printed carbon electrodes but more recently we have transiti
 oned to the use of laser-induced nanographite electrodes. These electrod
 es are made via a photothermal decomposition of polymer materials and re
 quire less organic solvents and are easier to make in large quantities. 
 While these electrodes have been known for almost a decade\, their elect
 rochemical properties remain poorly understood and transferring them to 
 microfluidic devices has remained tedious. The last part of this talk wi
 ll cover fundamental electrochemistry of this new material and methods f
 or incorporating them into microfluidic devices for PON applications.</s

  The formation and cleavage of chemical bonds in catalytic reactions rel
 ies on accessible redox processes that are often challenging for base me
 tals such as first row and early transition metals. Bimetallic cooperati
 vity provides a potential solution to this challenge. Leveraging dinucle
 ating phosphinoamide ligands\, a series of early/late heterobimetallic Z
 r/Co compounds have been synthesized and investigated. These frameworks 
 have been shown to support metal-metal multiple bonds and facilitate red
 ox and small molecule application processes. The many ways that metal-me
 tal cooperativity can be incorporated into bond activation and catalysis
  will be showcased in two examples. First\, the use of cobalt as a &quot
 \;redox-active metalloligand&quot\; for the appended redox-inactive d<su
 p>0</sup>&#160\;Zr<sup>IV </sup>metal site of a tris(phosphinoamide)-bri
 dged Zr/Co complex can be used to promote oxidative group transfer and c
 oordination-induced bond weakening through a multi-site coupled proton e
 lectron transfer process.&#160\;In addition\, the Co and Zr sites can si
 multaneously interact with substrates to facilitate bond activation proc
 esses such as those involved in C-H activation and N<sub>2</sub>&#160\;f
 ixation.</span></p>
