Chemistry Distinguished Alumni Lecture - Dr. William "Bill" Harris

Russell House Theater, Russell House University Union 200 Lobby - Special Event
Thursday, September 10, 2026, 2 – 4:30pm

Abstract: Over the past five decades, Dr. William C. (Bill) Harris has traveled a path that few chemists could have imagined when he completed his Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina. What began in laboratories at USC and the NIH led to opportunities in teaching, federal science leadership, university administration, international research policy, and innovation-driven economic development. Along the way, he helped launch major scientific initiatives, build research institutions, and work with leaders in the United States, Europe, Asia, and beyond to strengthen the role of science in addressing societal and economic challenges.

?In this retrospective seminar, Harris reflects on the people, decisions, unexpected turns, and occasional risks that shaped his career. He will share stories from experiences ranging from the U.S. National Science Foundation and Columbia University to Science Foundation Ireland and Science Foundation Arizona, highlighting lessons learned about leadership, innovation, and the long-term value of investing in science and education. Looking ahead, he will also explore what South Carolina, and its universities might learn from places such as Ireland that have used strategic investments in research, talent, and innovation to transform their economic future. Finally, he will ask how South Carolina can take advantage of the funding challenges in D.C. and lessons from Ireland to create one of the most innovative and successful economies in the world. His story is one about curiosity, opportunity, good fortune, and the many people who helped shape a professional odyssey that began in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at USC and led to unexpected adventures around the world.

Event type: Lecture
Admission Cost: 0

Departmental Seminar - Dr. Christian Johnson (USC) TPR

See event description for more details.
Friday, September 11, 2026, 4 – 5pm

Departmental seminars are held weekly in Jones 006 on Fridays at 4pm, though location is subject to change.

Abstract: Small GTPases are molecular switches that regulate fundamental cellular processes including proliferation, migration, and intracellular trafficking. They share a conserved protein fold, the G-domain, that cycles between functional states dependent on binding to GTP or GDP. Unsurprisingly, dysregulation of the ‘GTPase cycle’ is frequently associated with human disease. For example, mutants of K-Ras are identified in ~40% of colorectal cancers, and these mutants support tumor growth and therapeutic resistance. To stabilize signaling-active conformation of K-Ras, oncogenic mutations can inhibit GTP hydrolysis, enhance nucleotide exchange, or both. However, unlike the inhibition of GTP hydrolysis, mutation enhanced nucleotide exchange is poorly understood. Beyond cancer, mutant K-Ras can provide insight into the biochemistry of other small GTPases. For instance, the oncogenic mutant K-RasA59T shows a unique self-phosphorylating activity (i.e. autophosphorylation). While the alanine-to-threonine mutation of residue 59 is tumor promoting in K-Ras, it is a conserved substitution in the G-domain of other superfamily members, raising the possibility that autophosphorylation is a novel permutation of the GTPase cycle. In this lecture, we will first discuss our efforts to characterize the nucleotide exchange mechanism(s) of different K-Ras mutants to better understand their role in colorectal tumorigenesis. Second, we will discuss our development of a new purification strategy to generate crystallization-grade protein and its application to interrogate the mechanism of autophosphorylation and provide evidence that this biochemical reaction is also present in the brain enriched small GTPases Diras2 and Rhes. Together, our preliminary findings support a deeper understanding of GTPase regulation relevant to both cancer and neurobiology.

Event type: Lecture

RAS mutants were historically thought to be “undruggable” and locked in an active state due to impaired GTP hydrolysis. Contrary to this long-held view, we demonstrated that mutant RAS cycles between active and inactive states (Science, 2016; Cell, 2020), establishing that this dynamic transition can be therapeutically exploited. Building on this conceptual advance, we identified cellular proteins and pharmacologic approaches that restore mutant RAS GTPase function leading to physiologic inactivation in cancer cells (Science, 2021; Nature, 2025). We uncovered multiple therapeutic mechanisms to inactivate oncogenic RAS, including inhibitors targeting the inactive state of diverse KRAS mutants and molecular glues targeting the active state (Nature, 2023; Science, 2023). Translating these discoveries to the clinic, I co-led the first-in-human trial of a KRAS(G12C) inhibitor, culminating in the first FDA-approved RAS-targeted therapy and breaking a 40-year drought in RAS therapeutics (NEJM, 2020). Following this breakthrough we defined mechanisms of resistance to RAS inhibition in patients and identified rational combination strategies to improve clinical durability and extend therapeutic benefit (Nature, 2020; Nature, 2021; NEJM, 2025; Cell, 2026). Bridging biochemistry, structural biology, and clinical translation, these discoveries have advanced our fundamental understanding of RAS-driven tumor biology, transformed a long-considered intractable target into a druggable one, and established therapeutic strategies for patients who previously had limited treatment options.

Event type: Lecture

These materials are of interest due to the coordination environments that can be achieved and to the high degree of control over properties that can result from tailoring the exposed facets and from mixing metal oxides. The Richards’ research group has developed techniques to produce a number of new nanoscale metal and metal oxide materials that have demonstrated unique surface activities through controlled faceting as well as novel intercalation strategies that impart robustness. The initial synthesis of MgO and NiO with (111) facets as the primary surface has been followed by recent work utilizing a multiscale characterization platform to discover the underlying phenomena associated with the electrolytic properties of NiO(111) for Li ion batteries and electrochromics. Joint experimental-theoretical work with collaborators unravelled the potential of (111) polar surfaces for carbon capture. Most recently, in-situ microscopy studies have revealed insights into the NiO active sites and the effects of doping on electrolysis. Here, recent highlights regarding these materials and their applications will be presented.

Event type: Lecture

Departmental Seminar - Dr. Zdenek Dohnalek (PNNL)

See event description for more details.
Friday, October 23, 2026, 4 – 5pm

Departmental seminars are held weekly in Jones 006 on Fridays at 4pm, though location is subject to change.

Abstract: Surface science provides a unique platform for studying atomically precise catalysts and exploring their dynamically evolving structures and associated activity. These well-defined systems, often homotopic, are crucial for validating theoretical methods and uncovering structure–activity relationships in more complex catalytic environments. The presented studies focus on Pd and Rh single-atom catalysts supported on the model Fe3O4(001) surface. We combine high-resolution imaging, spectroscopic characterization, reactivity measurements, and density functional calculations to gain mechanistic insights into their structure, stability, and reactivity. In my talk, I will first discuss the mechanism of H2 adsorption and heterolytic dissociation on Pd adatoms, followed by water-assisted hydrogen spillover onto the oxide. Next, I will show how the competing dehydration and dehydrogenation pathways of formic acid can be used to probe the dynamic activation of Rh single atoms through changes in their local structural environment. We show that stable Rh atoms incorporated substitutionally into octahedral Fe sites are relatively inactive but are transiently converted by surface hydroxyls into highly active Rh adatoms that are present only during the reaction. Finally, I will demonstrate how CO coordination to Rh controls its activity and selectivity during the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde. We find that both pre-adsorbed CO and CO formed through acetaldehyde decomposition remain strongly bound to Rh, altering its reactivity and suppressing further acetaldehyde decomposition. These studies show that single-atom catalysts evolve under reaction conditions and emphasize the importance of support interactions, reaction intermediates, and adsorbed ligands in controlling their catalytic performance.

Event type: Lecture

Our research team felt this would provoke an inflammatory response and cause premature memory loss. We immediately tested the vaccine in our new mouse model that had memory deficits at 12 mo. To our surprise, not only did the vaccine not cause premature memory loss, it actually prevented memory loss as the mice aged. Subsequent work found amyloid immunotherapy rapidly removed existing plaques from aged mice, but caused microbleeds in the brain. This presaged both the success of amyloid immunotherapy in humans 20 years later, and also the major side effects, called ARIA. Immune involvement in Alzheimer’s pathology has a complex nature and can be both beneficial and detrimental. Our more recent work identifies patterns of immune activation that appear to bias in favor of beneficial aspects. This lecture will cover both the historical aspects of immune activation and more recent work uncovering signatures that may provide additional relief to people living with Alzheimer’s.

Event type: Lecture

Departmental Seminar - Dr. Chuck Henry (CSU)

See event description for more details.
Friday, November 6, 2026, 4 – 5pm

Departmental seminars are held weekly in Jones 006 on Fridays at 4pm, though location is subject to change.

Abstract: Point-of-need (PON) technologies have been a useful tool in medical and environmental diagnostics for decades with the handheld glucometer as a leading example. While significant advancements have been made, a major conundrum in many PON systems has been the tradeoff between assay performance (sensitivity, specificity, LOD, etc.) and ease of use. The simplest diagnostics require 1–2 user steps to achieve a result but lack the ability to detect low analyte levels. Increasing sensitivity to make tests useful at lower analyte concentrations would necessitate either added user steps or a significant increase in cost. Capillary-flow microfluidic devices have received significant attention as a tool to address current shortcomings in both medical and environmental testing because they are inexpensive, easy to use, and can perform a wide range of chemical and biochemical assays. Our group at Colorado State University has reported capillary-flow driven microfluidic devices combined with colorimetric and electrochemical detection that use channels formed using laser patterning in polyester films and double-sided adhesive combined with paper-based pumps and reagent storage systems. Building on these platforms, we have developed low-cost devices for environmental analysis, including paper- and polymer-based systems for detecting heavy metals, nutrient, and organic pollutants water samples as part of ongoing collaborations in environmental and occupational exposure assessment. These devices have been used to quantify metals and organics pollutants using simple colorimetric detection, demonstrating how the same core PON architecture can be adapted for both exposure monitoring and field-deployable water testing. Next, electrochemical detection for capillary flow devices will be discussed. We have demonstrated a range of applications of this platform from detecting viral infections to chronic disease monitoring. Our initial work in this field relied on screen-printed carbon electrodes but more recently we have transitioned to the use of laser-induced nanographite electrodes. These electrodes are made via a photothermal decomposition of polymer materials and require less organic solvents and are easier to make in large quantities. While these electrodes have been known for almost a decade, their electrochemical properties remain poorly understood and transferring them to microfluidic devices has remained tedious. The last part of this talk will cover fundamental electrochemistry of this new material and methods for incorporating them into microfluidic devices for PON applications.

Event type: Lecture

See event description for more details.
Friday, November 20, 2026, 4 – 5pm

Departmental seminars are held weekly in Jones 006 at 4pm, though location is subject to change.

Abstract: The formation and cleavage of chemical bonds in catalytic reactions relies on accessible redox processes that are often challenging for base metals such as first row and early transition metals. Bimetallic cooperativity provides a potential solution to this challenge. Leveraging dinucleating phosphinoamide ligands, a series of early/late heterobimetallic Zr/Co compounds have been synthesized and investigated. These frameworks have been shown to support metal-metal multiple bonds and facilitate redox and small molecule application processes. The many ways that metal-metal cooperativity can be incorporated into bond activation and catalysis will be showcased in two examples. First, the use of cobalt as a "redox-active metalloligand" for the appended redox-inactive d0 ZrIV metal site of a tris(phosphinoamide)-bridged Zr/Co complex can be used to promote oxidative group transfer and coordination-induced bond weakening through a multi-site coupled proton electron transfer process. In addition, the Co and Zr sites can simultaneously interact with substrates to facilitate bond activation processes such as those involved in C-H activation and N2 fixation.

Event type: Lecture
