History Lecture: The Holocaust in the Village with Dr. Miranda Brethour

The Holocaust in the Village: Rural Leadership, Anti-Jewish Violence, and the Intimacy of Genocide in the Occupied Polish Countryside

This talk with guest lecturer Dr. Miranda Brethour, examines the collaboration of Polish village leaders and their communities in the implementation of genocide between 1939 and 1945. Tracing the radicalization of anti-Jewish violence across towns and villages in the Lublin region, it explores the motives of local perpetrators, including: fear of German reprisals, material opportunism, social mobility, and the growing normalization of violence against Jewish life. The talk further reflects on the significance of local participation in Holocaust from the perspective of victims who experienced robbery, deportation, and murder at the hands of their neighbors. In doing so, it considers how genocide materialized through intimate forms of violence embedded in everyday social relations. Free and open to the public.
