Jeff Goldblum and the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra headline the 21st annual ARTS by George! in a wickedly entertaining performance you won’t want to miss. ARTS by George! is “an evening like no other,” supporting George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) student scholarships, the Mason Community Arts Academy, Green Machine Ensembles, and the Great Performances at Mason season at the Center for the Arts.

Goldblum—The Wizard of Oz in the global box office hit Wicked alongside Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo—has enjoyed a celebrated six-decade career spanning film, television, and stage, with credits including Jurassic Park, Independence Day, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok. He founded the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra more than 30 years ago, and together they have performed for audiences worldwide, reimagining jazz classics and American Songbook favorites with signature charm and swing. Mason Bands Concert: West Side Story (2026)*

Some stories never stop demanding to be told. Tonight, two ensembles take up that challenge from opposite ends of the wind band tradition — one rooted in folk memory and lyric line, the other tracing a path from Bach's architecture to Bernstein's streets — and meet in the middle at something electric.

The Mason Symphonic Band opens with music that listens closely to where it comes from. Calvin Custer's Variations on Scarborough Fair takes a centuries-old ballad and turns it over in the light, finding new color in every facet. Frank Erickson's Air for Band slows the room down, trading momentum for breath and space. Then Frank Ticheli's Cajun Folksongs pulls the evening south, into the syncopated heat and dance-floor pulse of Louisiana — folk music reimagined with the same restless curiosity that defines this set.

The Mason Wind Symphony answers with a program built on contrast and connection. Two faces of Bach open the set: the quiet devotion of Fervent is My Longing beside the architectural precision of the Little Fugue in G Minor, proof that structure itself can be its own kind of beauty. Nicole Piunno's With Love and Grace brings a contemporary voice into the room, lyrical and unguarded. And then: Bernstein. Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, arranged by Paul Lavender, doesn't just close the evening — it ignites it, channeling rivalry, romance, and raw urban energy into one of the most enduring scores in American musical theater.

Two ensembles. Four centuries of music. One unmistakable feeling that the wind band is very much alive.

Adams puts his own twist on the tangos of Piazzolla, while Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé gives a fictional military hero unexpected life through satire. The music culminates in Adams’ Scheherazade.2, a fierce reimagining of Rimsky-Korsakov’s legendary heroine. Here, Scheherazade is no longer simply a storyteller, but a woman fighting for her own survival—with Josefowicz as her fearless musical voice.

Let’s Fly Away

Grammy Award-nominated British a cappella ensemble VOCES8 makes its Center for the Arts debut with a performance that’s sure to inspire through the joy of song. As the world’s top streaming classical vocal group, VOCES8 is praised for “gorgeous sound, impeccable ensemble and intense responsiveness to text, harmony and melodic shape—all of the highest quality” (BBC Music Magazine). The group has performed at many notable venues from Wigmore Hall to Sydney Opera House with an extensive repertory that ranges from pop and jazz to classical music more than 800 years old. “Close harmony singing doesn’t get much more flawless than this” (The Times).

Taking its title from the exuberant final invitation of Come Fly with Me, "Let’s Fly Away" is a celebration of the extraordinary breadth and versatility of the human voice. The George Mason University Jazz Ensemble opens its 2026–2027 season by celebrating the enduring legacy of House Concurrent Resolution 57 (H. Con. Res. 57,) the landmark Congressional Resolution that designated jazz as "a rare and valuable national American treasure." Passed in 1987, the resolution affirmed jazz as America's indigenous art form and recognized its profound cultural, educational, and international significance. It continues to serve as a blueprint for preserving, promoting, and advancing jazz for future generations.

In keeping with the spirit of this historic resolution, the Mason Jazz Ensemble will present an evening of straight-ahead jazz that celebrates the rich tradition of America's music while looking confidently toward its future. The program will also pay tribute to the life and artistry of the legendary Sonny Rollins, whose fearless creativity, boundless imagination, and lifelong pursuit of artistic excellence inspired generations of musicians around the world. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

In partnership with Legal Services of Northern Virginia, proceeds from this concert help provide free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and families facing issues such as housing, domestic violence, consumer protection, family law, veterans' services, and public benefits. VIVO celebrates the vitality, imagination, and expressive power of music being created in our own time. This performance holds special meaning for the Mason Wind Symphony, which was selected to appear as a Featured Concert Ensemble at the 2026 Virginia Music Educators Association Conference—the Commonwealth's most distinguished stage for school music ensembles. Such invitations recognize not only artistic excellence, but also a shared commitment to curiosity, craftsmanship, and the pursuit of meaningful musical experiences.

The evening begins with the Mason Symphonic Band, whose program offers three distinct voices within today's wind repertoire. Vaclav Nelhybel's Festivo radiates exuberance and celebration, its rhythmic vitality serving as a joyful invitation into the evening. In contrast, Nishant Amatya's as the fog settles unfolds with quiet introspection, immersing listeners in a world of mystery and delicate beauty. Benjamin Taylor's Shattering Infinity closes the set with unrelenting energy and soaring intensity, a work that reaches outward with imagination and boundless momentum.

The concert continues with a feature presentation of the combined South County HS and Hayfield Secondary School Bands, conducted by Kevin Engdahl and Robert Specketer.

The Mason Wind Symphony’s portion of the program appropriately begins with Zhou Tian's Vivo. Sparkling colors and propulsive rhythms burst forth with a joyful vitality that gives the evening its name and its spirit. The third movement of Stacy Garrop's Quicksilver follows, featuring Mason’s Professor of Saxophone, Dr. Connor Mikula in a dazzling display of virtuosity and brilliance, where agility and lyricism intertwine with breathtaking effect.

Salsa Navidad

Spanish Harlem Orchestra brings its vibrant sound to the Center for the Arts for Salsa Navidad, a celebration of Puerto Rican holiday traditions. Led by pianist and founder Oscar Hernández, the three-time Grammy-winning ensemble has released 10 albums over the past 25 years and performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. Newsday calls the group “the leading light of the salsa reconstruction movement.” Hernández previously served as musical director for Rubén Blades and performed with legends Tito Puente and Celia Cruz. The program blends aguinaldo—the island’s lively caroling tradition—with beloved American Christmas favorites in Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s electrifying salsa dura style. As The New York Times writes, “This band reminds you of the excitement that is central to the salsa orchestra.”

Aquila Theatre returns with a compelling new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s timeless tale The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This New York-based company, with origins in London, is one of the foremost producers of classical theater in the U.S. Recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities as a company of distinctive cultural significance in traditional British performance, Aquila brings to life recognized and beloved stories of the past for today’s audiences. In this gothic horror tale, audiences will be exposed to the treacherous and terrifying nature of a fractured self. “Aquila’s productions are beautifully spoken, dramatically revealing and crystalline in effect” (The New Yorker).

This special program features the world premiere of Cello Concerto No. 2 by Grammy®-nominated Spanish-American composer Andrea Casarrubios. Written for and dedicated to Amit Peled, with whom she studied during her time at the Peabody Conservatory, the new concerto showcases the expressive depth and soaring beauty of the cello in a powerful contemporary voice.

Peled will also perform Kol Nidrei by Max Bruch, the richly evocative work for cello and orchestra premiered by Robert Hausmann in 1881, a close associate of Johannes Brahms, and now considered a cornerstone of the cello repertoire.

Ripples in the Water: Philip Glass at 90

Grammy Award-winning quartet Third Coast Percussion (TCP) makes its Center for the Arts debut with an electrifying program celebrating the music and influence of composer Philip Glass, as he turns 90 in 2027. Building on a close artistic partnership, the ensemble commissioned Glass in 2018 to compose his first work for percussion ensemble. Honoring his enduring impact, the concert pairs that milestone work with music by electronic producer Jlin, pop polymath Devonté Hynes, TCP’s own David Skidmore, and minimalism master Steve Reich. Experience shimmering harmonies brought to life through thrilling rhythm, color, and texture, performed on a striking array of traditional and unexpected percussion instruments. “Third Coast Percussion continues to push percussion in new directions, blurring musical boundaries and beguiling new listeners” (NPR).

Infectiously positive and bursting with heart, Mario is on a mission to entertain and inspire future computer programmers, AI specialists, and robotic engineers along the way. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra debuts at the Center for the Arts with an exhilarating program including returning audience favorite, “phenom” (San Francisco Chronicle) pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason. Celebrated for its conductorless performances and deeply collaborative artistry, Orpheus has spent more than 50 years bringing fresh energy and imagination to classical music through vibrant partnerships with guest artists. “Playing with perfect unanimity, their performances have polish and spirit and display an infectious love for making music” (The New York Times). British pianist Kanneh-Mason, an ECHO Rising Star and recipient of the coveted Leonard Bernstein Award, joins Orpheus for a masterful performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27.

University Chamber Singers Concert: Where Light Begins: A Choral Meditation on Creation

The George Mason University Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Lisa Billingham, present Where Light Begins, an evening of choral artistry that traces one of humanity's oldest and most enduring themes — the emergence of the world from nothingness. Drawing from three centuries of choral music heritage, the program moves from the silence before time, through the awakening of the natural world, and finally to humanity's place within it.

The concert features selections from Franz Joseph Haydn’s The Creation (1798), whose radiant choruses gave the Western choral tradition the definitive musical vision of the cosmos taking shape. The concert moves forward to the 21st century, where Dan Forrest — writing 225 years after Haydn, in deliberate homage to him — reimagines the same arc in his own contemporary style. Selections from Forrest's CREATION (2023) carry the narrative through the forming of light, sky, and landscape with the same sense of wonder that animated Haydn's original.

Join us for an evening of oratorio selections in a chamber music setting from creation to a celebration of nature and humanity.

Dreams are fragile things. They are born in imagination, sustained through perseverance, and carried forward by communities willing to believe in possibilities not yet realized. HOLD FAST TO DREAMS celebrates the power of vision - those aspirations that shape our lives, inspire our art, and call us toward a more hopeful future.

This concert features both the Mason Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony together in a dynamic concert that takes its title from Langston Hughes's enduring poem, this program invites us to consider dreams not as fleeting wishes, but as lifelines that sustain the human spirit. Across generations and traditions, the works on this evening's program explore identity, faith, resilience, and the courage to imagine a world transformed.

The Mason Wind Symphony is excited to collaborate with internationally acclaimed tenor, scholar, and higher education leader Dr. Albert Lee, Associate Dean for Student Life and Community Engagement at the Yale School of Music, in Erik Santos's The Seer. Lauded for his "vocally sumptuous" artistry and recognized as one of today's foremost interpreters of American vocal music, Dr. Lee has appeared with leading orchestras and opera companies throughout the United States and abroad. His distinguished career as a performer, educator, and advocate has been marked by a deep commitment to the music and literature of Langston Hughes, making this collaboration especially meaningful.

A "seer" is one who perceives truths hidden from ordinary sight, and Santos's work invites listeners into that mysterious realm where dreams and reality, memory and imagination, the conscious and subconscious converge. Drawing inspiration from an astonishing array of sources—including Langston Hughes, Rainer Maria Rilke, Nina Simone, mythology, film, and popular music—The Seer unfolds as a musical mandala, weaving together disparate strands into a sound world that is at once deeply personal and profoundly universal.
