Dr. Yvonne P. Sherwood is an Indigenous scholar (Spokane and Coeur d’Alene), educator, and community-engaged researcher whose work bridges Indigenous governance, land-based education, and social justice. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto Mississauga (Canada), where she teaches Indigenous Legal Orders and Anti-Colonial Methodologies. In 2023–2024, she was Washington State University’s Professor of Indigenous/Native American Law and Policy in the Department of Politics. Her research centers Indigenous governance, language reclamation, food sovereignty, and collaborative models grounded in relational accountability.

A proud alumna of Eastern Washington University and a McNair Scholar, Dr. Sherwood’s intellectual path was shaped by the transformative power of federally funded access programs and interdisciplinary fields such as Ethnic Studies and Feminist Studies. As a McNair Scholar, she was mentored in rigorous research design and critical inquiry—an experience that solidified her commitment to graduate study and to expanding pathways for first-generation, Women of Color, and Indigenous students in higher education, particularly in mainstream social science fields such as sociology.

As an undergraduate, she was an active student leader, serving as an officer for Indigenous Resistance Organizers, M.E.Ch.A., and Yakima Valley Community College Tiin-Ma. She also worked in solidarity with EWU Pride, the EWU Black Student Union, and Spokane’s Peace and Justice League, building cross-community coalitions grounded in shared struggles for justice.

Her work stands as a testament to the enduring impact of American Indian Studies, Chicanx/o/@ Studies, Women’s & Gender Studies, and McNair programs as intellectual homes that do not simply analyze the world but prepare students to transform it.

We are excited to host our third-annual A Night of Champions at the Davenport Grand Hotel on Saturday, May 9th, in the main ballroom at ground-level on the northeast end of the building.

The dress code for the event is cocktail attire and/or business casual.

Just to remind you, doors will open for our social period at 5:00 PM with dinner service at 6:45 PM, and the main program following at 7:30 PM (we may start earlier pending dinner and dessert service).

If you are driving to the venue, you may park in the Davenport Grand Parking Garage. The entrance is located off Washington Street, just past Main Avenue (across from Auntie's Bookstore). You'll collect a ticket when you enter the garage, but we will provide you with a parking voucher when you check in at the event, which will cover your parking fees when you leave at the end of the night.

We have all kinds of exciting silent, premium, and live auction items which will be on display throughout the night which you can also now preview via our menu options on the website. Don't forget to pick up raffle tickets for your chance to win a special prize that will be announced at a later date.

As a reminder, all bidding, raffle tickets, and paddle raise activities will be processed to a card on file, which you will provide at check-in.

We raised over $200,000 last year to support Eastern Washington University student-athletes and our programs thanks to Eagle fans, donors, and community members. This year, we have our sights set even higher!
