Good Enough Art: A Few Theses on Middling Mediations

Eliot - Chapel
Thursday, April 9, 2026, 4:40 – 6pm

The recent surge of “mid” as an aesthetic judgment paradoxically discloses the missing middle in contemporary cultural arts: a decline of midbudget cinema, midlist fiction, and other just fine commodity aesthetic forms. Amid a historic eviction of the middle class, cultural study of the middlebrow can no longer rely upon the traditional sociological method. Briefly considering architecture, photography, fiction, and television, this talk experiments with a formalist approach to “good enough” art.

Anna Kornbluh's research and teaching interests center on the novel, film, and cultural aesthetics in theoretical perspective, including formalist, Marxist, and psychoanalytic approaches. She is the author of several books and essays and is a member of the UIC United Faculty bargaining team, on the editorial boards of Novel, Mediations, Genre, and Parapraxis, and is the founding facilitator of The Inter Chicago Circle for Experimental Critical Theory and a partner in HumanitiesWorks.org.

Sponsored by the Division of Literature & Languages. Free and open to the public.

Event Name: Lit & Lang Speaker: Anna Kornbluh
Organization: Lit & Lang Division
Categories: Public Events, Faculty Calendar, Staff Calendar, Student Calendar

The United States of America: A 250th Anniversary Assessment

Eliot - Chapel
Tuesday, April 14, 2026, 5 – 6:30pm

This July marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the pinnacle of a longer commemoration of the American Revolution's semiquincentennial. This panel of Reed faculty and visiting scholars will use this landmark anniversary as an occasion to reflect on the state of the United States today--and how we got here. Topics likely to be considered include culture wars, American empire, birthright citizenship, state-federal relations, and whatever members of the audience wish to bring up. Come join us as we grapple with the past, present, and future of the U.S. in advance of its 250th birthday.

Sponsored by the American Studies Program.

Event Name: American Studies panel
Organization: American Studies
Categories: Public Events, Faculty Calendar, Staff Calendar, Student Calendar

Wildfire has evolved from a regional, seasonal threat into a continental crisis, as demonstrated by last year's $30-billion disaster in Los Angeles—a city with sophisticated plans and expert knowledge that still failed to act in time. The presentation also brings the issue home to Portland, where structural vulnerabilities similar to LA's put neighborhoods like Eastmoreland and Sellwood at serious risk.

Event Name: Lecture: Robert McCullough
Organization: Alumni Relations
Categories: Public Events, Faculty Calendar, Staff Calendar, Student Calendar
