Fine Arts Complex 313 Exhibit/Gallery
Wednesday, April 22, 2026, 8am – 5pm

The UAF Art Gallery will host a juried student exhibition from April 13-24. The gallery is open M-F 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no cost of admittance.

The closing reception will be held from 6–7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in the gallery. Klara Maisch will give a 10-minute juror talk, followed by the presentation of exhibition awards. The Art Department will also present its outstanding student awards. Refreshments will be provided.

VAWS Webinar - Exploring Alaska’s Weather and Environment through Online Courses from COMET MetEd

GINA and ASF, in partnership with ACCAP, will be hosting a Virtual Alaska Weather Symposium webinar in April on COMET’s MetEd courses. Amy Stevermer, Scientist, and Patrick Dills, Scientist, from The COMET Program at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, will discuss the online training courses available on COMET’s MetEd website and provide up-to-date information about capabilities and products for meeting high-latitude observation challenges. They will focus on satellite imagery and other products to detect and monitor weather and environmental conditions, improving forecasts and mitigating the risks posed by weather hazards.

Tracking Green-up in Alaska’s Boreal Forest

Join the UAF Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Preparedness for the annual green-up outlook. Green-up, when leaves burst forth from Alaska’s deciduous trees, has important implications for the seasonal ecology, society and even meteorology in the state. Sap starts flowing in birch trees, leading to tapping and turning the sap into delicious treats. It is rapidly followed by pollen release, which is a health issue for many Alaskans. Fairbanks has a unique multi-decadal record of green-up dates that’s been used to develop a technique for forecasting green-up and related events in the Interior and more broadly in the boreal forest regions in Alaska. This webinar will be the seventh annual review of the green-up forecasting tools and will provide a look-ahead at green-up for Spring 2026. One Tree will demonstrate citizen science-outreach tools for birch tappers and others.

Carved by language: A border, a river, and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Join us in-person at the Rasmuson Library or online for this exciting presentation by Lydia Blanchet.

The Canning River drains the southern slopes of Alaska’s Brooks range, flowing 125 miles north to its mouth in the Arctic Ocean. For 65 of these miles, the western border of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge parallels the river, separating the Refuge to the east from State land and Prudhoe Bay to the west.

In her archival research for the preliminary stages of her English M.A. thesis, Lydia Blanchet uses the lens of river-as-border to explore a range of topics, from the parceling of land in Alaska under ANCSA and ANILCA and the establishment of the Refuge, to the colonial implications of the concept of wilderness and the constructed nature of borders themselves.

Lydia will be presenting her work as a recipient of the Paul H. McCarthy Award.

Join Libby Liggins from the University of Auckland, on Thursday, April 23 from 3:40-5 p.m. in the Murie Auditorium for the 2026 Frank and Majorie Meek Seminar: Supporting Local Agency in Global Biodiversity Data Systems.

While the genomics community has long championed open data, the CARE Principles for Indigenous data governance, new Global Access and Benefit Sharing Frameworks, and increasing interest in commercial gain from genomic data and the risk of AI are necessitating a shift toward more nuanced data stewardship. There is a critical need to balance global interoperability and transparency with local agency to ensure equitable benefits and a fit-for-purpose data ecosystem.

The seminar will highlight tools, infrastructures, and forthcoming developments that are working to shift communities of practice toward “accessible-but-controlled,” “global-but-local” and “guidance-to-regulation” with relevance to genomic data and wider biodiversity data infrastructures.

Hour 1: Pre-anesthesia care: Patient evaluation and preparation

April 25 - 1 hour

Description: In this lecture hour, pre-anesthesia care will be reviewed. From medical record review to minimum database recommendations to peri-anesthetic drug withhold times, a foundation will be set for proper pre-anesthetic patient preparation

Objectives:

Course participants will be able to identify helpful organizational habits when submitting records for anesthesia consult requests.
Course participants will be able to make recommendations for bloodwork and diagnostic imaging that may be needed to determine patient fitness for anesthesia.

Hour 2: Anesthesia machine basics

April 25 - 1 hour

Stephanie Hon, DVM, DACVAA

Description: In this lecture hour, anesthesia machine maintenance, setup, and operation will be reviewed. General anesthesia machine foundations will be discussed, and common machines in private practice will be highlighted.

Objectives:

Course participants will be able to identify basic parts of an anesthesia machine and follow the flow of gas from source to patient.
Course participants will be able to identify common sources of machine leaks
Course participants will be able to create a routine machine preparation checklist for their institution.

Hour 3: Common complications of general anesthesia: bradycardia and hypotension

April 25 - 1 hour

Stephanie Hon, DVM, DACVAA

Description: In this lecture hour, two of the most common anesthetic complications, bradycardia and hypotension, will be discussed.

Objectives:

Course participants will understand the cardiovascular physiology relating to bradycardia and hypotension in the peri-anesthetic period.
Course participants will learn strategies to prevent, mitigate and treat these complications.

Hour 4: Anesthesia management for common comorbidities

April 25 - 1 hour

Stephanie Hon, DVM, DACVAA

Description: In this lecture hour, common comorbidities in canine and feline anesthesia will be discussed.

Objectives:

Attendees will be able to identify the common anesthesia comorbidities encountered in small animal veterinary practice
Attendees will learn how to develop individualized anesthesia protocols and management strategies for these comorbidities.
