Learn to exercise and eat for optimal brain and bone health in a series of free lunchtime webinars hosted by AARP and led by University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension agent Sarah Lewis.

Urban Harvest: Backyard Chickens 101
Raising your own chickens doesn't require a lot of space, just the right information. Learn from Jim Vinyard, livestock nutritionist at the Matanuska Experiment Farm and Extension Center in Palmer, about how to get a healthy coop started. Through this interactive presentation, learn about the basics, how to differentiate feeds, and how to sprout grains.
Discuss heating sources and Alaska wintertime in this informational course. $5 materials fee, registration required. This class is a collaboration between UAF Cooperative Extension Service and Seed Lab.

Sea Otter Interactions with Mariculture Oyster Farms
Join a free UAF Cooperative Extension Service webinar to learn about recent studies on sea otter activity and their interactions with mariculture operations. Based on field observations, Emily Reynolds will share insights into foraging behavior, habitat use, and the potential impacts of sea otters in aquaculture and mariculture settings.
The presentation will examine the role of sea otters as keystone predators and their influence on evolving coastal economies, particularly in Alaska.
Reynolds is an Alaska Sea Grant state fellow with NOAA’s Aquaculture Program, where she works on projects related to seaweed farming and spatial mapping of kelp resources. She earned her master's in marine biology from UAF, where her thesis research examined sea otter activity and foraging behavior in and around oyster farms.

Help us greet the new U.S. Department of Agriculture NextGen scholars in this welcoming and orientation event at the Student Success Center at the Rasmussen Library.
This program is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s national NextGen initiative, which aims to build a skilled, diverse workforce for the future of agriculture. In addition to paid internships, the program offers competitive scholarship opportunities to help students continue their education in the food and agriculture enterprise career field.

Prepare your Garden for Winter
In this free webinar, the UAF Cooperative Extension Service will share helpful tips for putting gardens to bed for the winter. Learn what to keep and what to cut, as well as dividing and transplanting. It will also cover how to store dahlias, what to plant around this time, and other helpful tips to ensure the best chances of success for your perennial and vegetable beds.
Katie Redmond is a part of the horticulture crew at the Alaska Botanical Garden. A plant-lover since childhood and professional gardener since 2011, before moving to Alaska, she worked in the perennial gardening industry, designing and installing large-scale and private gardens in Crested Butte, Colorado. She has a passion for sustainable gardening practices, native flora and herbalism.

Anchorage: Urban Harvest: Mushroom Identification in Alaska
Join us for an overview of common, interesting, and/or edible mushrooms from Southcentral Alaska and learn how to identify them. We’ll cover the basics of mushroom identification, how to properly prepare them for the table, and precautions for eating mushrooms from the wild. Participants are encouraged to bring in mushrooms from their yards or the woods for discussion and ID. Free. Registration required.
Kate Mohatt is the founder of the Turnagain Arm Mycological Society and the Girdwood Fungus Fair, and co-author of Mushrooms of Alaska Field Guide and Mushrooms of National Forests in Alaska. She is a forest ecologist for the Chugach National Forest and has been studying mushrooms in Alaska for over 20 years.

NextGen Food and Climate Symposium
Nancy Fresco, climate change researcher with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, will lead the 2025 NextGen Food and Climate Symposium. Fresco will discuss climate change and its effects on regional and global food security. USDA NextGen scholars from Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii and Guam are invited, along with the public.
The symposium will be from 2-5 p.m. ADT on Thursday, Sept. 25 (https://bit.ly/NextGen9-25) and repeated on Saturday, Sept. 27, also from 2-5 p.m. ADT. (https://bit.ly/NextGen9-27). The event is synchronous and highly interactive, and attendance is mandatory for NextGen scholars.
The full symposium will be three hours long. The first hour (Changes and Challenges) will be for new NextGen Scholars and any guests or members of the public who are less familiar with climate change science and the NextGen program. Returning scholars will attend only hours two and three of the event (Student-led Exploration).
