Seeds of Conflict: Japan and China - A Public Lecture by Dr. Erin Brightwell
Why are Japan’s relations with its neighbors so complicated today? How did these conflicts begin? Japan’s role in East Asia today—from its claims to disputed territories to its acknowledgment of wartime atrocities—is a sensitive subject for many. However, this is partly due to a complicated history that predates the modern nation. Dr. Erin Brightwell, associate professor of premodern Japanese literature at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, explores competing representations of China in Japan, from their premodern origins to their impact on the contemporary world. A Zoom option is available for those who cannot attend in person.

A documentary film screening of Our Man in Tehran will explore the true story behind the Canadian-U.S. covert rescue mission during the Iran hostage crisis of 1979–1981, focusing on how six American diplomats evaded capture and were ultimately smuggled out of Iran. Through firsthand interviews and archival footage, the film highlights Canada’s critical role in sheltering the Americans and challenges popularized accounts like those depicted in Argo.
