Composting: No time to waste webinar
Composting: No time to waste is the last of 11 weekly webinars covering the basics of growing vegetables in Alaska.
Casey Matney, the Kenai-based agriculture and horticulture agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the free classes. Topics include seed starting, soil testing, raised beds, planting potatoes, hardening off seedlings and transplanting them, and composting.
Join the classes each Tuesday via Zoom from 5:30-6:30 p.m. from April 8 to June 17. You can register for one or all of the classes on the gardening website or by visiting https://bit.ly/AlaskaGardening,

Webinar: Our Common Plant Diseases
All plants are susceptible to disease. Disease can be caused by biotic (bacteria, fungi, viruses) and abiotic (non-living, environmental) means. Join this free webinar on June 18 from 12 to 1 p.m. Todd Steinlage, a plant pathologist with the Alaska Plant Materials Center, will discuss common diseases in Alaska and management options for them.
The Plant Materials Center is part of the Alaska Division of Agriculture. Todd has worked in plant pathology for 27 years and works with bacteria, fungi, viruses, and abiotic diseases. He has a master's degree in plant pathology from Iowa State University.

Webinar: Using Insects to Control Garden Pests
Have you ever wondered which bugs in your garden are beneficial?
Joey Slowik, integrated pest management technician at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service in Palmer, will cover the beneficial insects that are natural enemies of pest bugs. He will discuss potential insect friends, what they want, and some ways to encourage them in your garden. Slowik will also discuss commercial biocontrol options, what's available and potentially useful in Alaska.

Certified Food Protection Manager class
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service is offering a Certified Food Protection Manager class that will cover material required to pass the National Restaurant Association's ServSafe Manager exam for Alaska.
A certified food protection manager is responsible for monitoring and managing all food establishment operations to ensure compliance with regulations. State regulations require that all food establishments have at least one certified food protection manager on staff.
The class is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a lunch break. The class is available statewide via Zoom or in person at the Tanana District Cooperative Extension office, 1000 University Ave. Fairbanks. The Zoom link will be emailed to participants one week before the class.
The $200 fee includes instruction, the training manual and one proctored certification exam, with proctors in Fairbanks, Juneau, Sitka and other communities upon request. In some locations, the proctored exam will take place immediately…

Fairbanks: 2025 UAF Research Field Days
Field Days is an opportunity for the public to join UAF researchers for a day of learning at our experiment farms! Tour the fields and farms and learn through presentations, tours and discussions about varietal trials, small grains breeding, livestock nutrition, soil health and more!
Farmers, community leaders and the general public are invited to this free educational event at the Fairbanks Experiment Farm, located on the UAF Troth Yeddha' Campus in Fairbanks. Each field day will include a schedule of talks presented by researchers.
