Palmer: Selling Homemade Foods

Learn about the significant changes the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation made to the cottage food industry. The rules were significantly expanded in 2024 and are now known as the Homemade Food Exemption. Sarah Lewis, UAF Cooperative Extension Service health, home and family development agent, will explain the changes. If you have a Homemade Foods business, would like to start one, or might sell homemade foods through your market, knowledge of the new rules will help ensure you're in compliance. It's important to understand the risks and opportunities associated with selling either potentially harmful or nonpotentially harmful foods from a home-based business. There will be time for questions following the presentation. The workshop will meet in-person in Room 208 of Kerttula Hall at the Matanuska Experiment Farm and Extension Center, 1509 S. Georgeson Drive, Palmer or via Zoom. Register for both in-person and Zoom options using the online form or visit https://bit.ly/HomeFoodSales. … Categories: Public events calendar - Fairbanks, Cooperative Extension calendar, Anchorage CES calendar, Bethel CES calendar, Bristol Bay/Dillingham CES calendar, Delta Junction CES calendar, Southeast CES calendar, Kenai/Soldotna CES calendar, Kodiak CES calendar, Mat-Su/Copper River CES calendar, Northwest/Nome CES calendar, Sitka CES calendar, Fairbanks/Tanana CES calendar. Webinar: Using Kelp as Fertilizer

Erin Oliver, a postdoctoral researcher with Washington State University and a USDA Climate Hub Fellow for Alaska Agriculture stationed in Palmer, will discuss lab and field studies conducted at Matanuska Experiment Farm to investigate the effects of kelp on soil health and crop production in a free webinar. Kelp shows great promise for improving soil health and crop production in Alaska. Potential benefits include increased nutrient availability, improved soil pH, increased seed germination rates, and increased crop biomass. Using Alaska-grown kelp in agricultural soils provides both economic benefits for the mariculture industry and an alternative to commercial, inorganic fertilizers produced outside of Alaska. Studies have found that the benefits of kelp vary by soil type and amendment rates, but little research has been done in Alaska on this subject. The goal of this project is to determine the best method for applying kelp to Alaska soils. This talk will discuss both lab and field studies… Categories: Public events calendar - Fairbanks, Cooperative Extension calendar, Anchorage CES calendar, Bethel CES calendar, Bristol Bay/Dillingham CES calendar, Delta Junction CES calendar, Southeast CES calendar, Kenai/Soldotna CES calendar, Kodiak CES calendar, Mat-Su/Copper River CES calendar, Northwest/Nome CES calendar, Sitka CES calendar, Fairbanks/Tanana CES calendar.
