Axel Timmermann: Seminar on past climate impacts on human evolution
Join Axel Timmermann, director of the IBS Center for Climate Physics at his seminar on past climate impacts on human evolution. Timmermann writes:
Our genus Homo emerged in Africa 2-3 million years ago during a time of climate cooling and increasing glacial cycles. How early humans adapted to these disruptions remains a mystery. This seminar introduces numberical models that simulate dispersal, adaptation, and interbreeding, using paleo-climate simulations to explore climate's role in human evolution.

Love Over Law: Indigenous Resistance to Policing Intimate Relationships on the Colorado River Indian Reservation
In the early 20th century, officials on the Colorado River Indian Reservation and at local boarding schools monitored the intimate lives of Indigenous Peoples, aiming to reform relationships, suppress desires, and enforce settler norms. Despite this intrusive oversight, the Mohave and Chemehuevi resisted, forging relationships that defied these expectations. This presentation explores these tensions and acts of defiance, offering insights into Indigenous resistance to settler-imposed norms. A brief Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) meeting will follow the event.

GVEA in the 21st Century
Fairbanks and Interior Alaska are at a critical energy crossroads as the region’s aging electrical generation fleet requires modernization and new generation sources. With the Cook Inlet experiencing a natural gas shortfall, Golden Valley Electric Association can no longer rely on gas-fired economy energy from South Central Alaska. GVEA has secured federal funding totaling hundreds of millions of dollars to invest in batteries and transmission infrastructure to support solar and wind energy projects, marking a significant step toward renewable energy integration in the region. Tom DeLong, chairman of the board for GVEA, will host a presentation and Q&A session to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the utility and the future of energy in the Interior. This event is brought to you by the UAF Department of History. .

Juneau: Alaska Lumber Grading Training
The purpose of the Alaska Lumber Grading program is to expand Alaskans' ability to use locally harvested and sawn lumber for homebuilding. It does so by establishing a lumber grading training and certification program that allows sawyers to self-grade dimension lumber, which may be accepted as an alternative for lumber identified by a grade mark to satisfy building code requirements in Alaska.
Individuals who complete the one-day training and pass the associated exam will be issued a renewable 5-year certificate allowing them to self-grade dimension lumber for personal use or for sale.

Circumpolar Music Series Hosts Asikluk Topkok and the Pavva Iñupiaq Dancers
On Tuesday, March 18 at 11:30 a.m. in the Davis Concert Hall, the Circumpolar Music Series will host Asikluk Topkok and members of the Pavva Iñupiaq Dancers as part of the Department of Music's Alaska Native Music course. In this event, aspects of Iñupiaq culture, song, and dance will be discussed and demonstrated. The Pavva Iñupiaq Dancers are residents of the Fairbanks area and were formed to preserve the culture and traditions of the Iñupiaq peoples through song and dance. Sharing our culture through performances to both Alaska Native and non-Native peoples help us keep strong in our heritage. Fairbanks is in the interior of Alaska and the name "Pavva," in Iñupiaq means 'away from shore, landwards, toward the mountain' was chosen. The group chose this name because they live away from the Northern region where their parents and grandparents originally lived. Although most of the Iñupiaq people in Fairbanks may have danced with family or other dance groups, they formed the Iñupiaq dance group in 1999 to be…

Tok: Alaska Lumber Grading Training
The purpose of the Alaska Lumber Grading program is to expand Alaskans' ability to use locally harvested and sawn lumber for homebuilding. It does so by establishing a lumber grading training and certification program that allows sawyers to self-grade dimension lumber, which may be accepted as an alternative for lumber identified by a grade mark to satisfy building code requirements in Alaska.
Individuals who complete the one-day training and pass the associated exam will be issued a renewable 5-year certificate allowing them to self-grade dimension lumber for personal use or for sale.
