Webinar: Drying Firewood in Interior Alaska: Strategies for the most efficient drying times
This winter’s record-cold temperatures in Interior Alaska have highlighted the value of firewood as an efficient and cost-saving heat source. However, many who live here know the significant time and effort it takes for trees in the forest to become usable and dry firewood. This free presentation will explain how you can apply the practical results of a firewood drying study conducted by University of Alaska Fairbanks forestry researchers Dr. Jessie Young-Robertson and Matt Robertson. Learn how to implement efficient strategies for harvesting and drying firewood to reduce firewood drying times by up to 6 months.

Kenai: Alaska Lumber Grading Training
The purpose of the Alaska Lumber Grading program is to expand Alaskans' ability to use locally harvested and sawn lumber for homebuilding. It does so by establishing a lumber grading training and certification program that allows sawyers to self-grade dimension lumber, which may be accepted as an alternative for lumber identified by a grade mark to satisfy building code requirements in Alaska.
Individuals who complete the one-day training and pass the associated exam will be issued a renewable 5-year certificate allowing them to self-grade dimension lumber for personal use or for sale.

Application of the NOAA Next Generation Fire System for Improved Wildfire Detection and Monitoring in Alaska
GINA and ASF, in partnership with ACCAP, will be hosting a Virtual Alaska Weather Symposium (VAWS) webinar in May on the NOAA Next Generation Fire System Application. Dr. Michael Pavolonis, NESDIS Wildland Fire Program Manager, will discuss the operational benefits of the NOAA Next Generation Fire System (NGFS), which leverages advanced satellite observations to provide faster, more reliable wildfire intelligence than legacy methods. By integrating geostationary and low Earth orbit data, the NGFS offers enhanced resilience against smoke and cloud obstructions, ensuring robust monitoring in challenging conditions. The presentation will provide an overview of the NGFS and the planned activities for the 2026 Alaska fire season.

2026 Midnight Sun Run 10K
The Midnight Sun Run 10K is a uniquely Alaskan event, attracting participants from all over the world. The race begins at 10 p.m. on the Saturday closest to the summer solstice. Starting at the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus, participants wind 6.2 miles through area neighborhoods lined with thousands of high-spirited spectators. The course ends at Pioneer Park, where the festivities continue until well after midnight.
The race is chip timed, with an elite runner corral that allows serious runners a place at the head of the race, while also supporting every pace and ability. The costumed division is perhaps one of the most anticipated aspects of the race, showcasing true Fairbanks creativity.
