Fairbanks: Hydroponics Workshop - youth
A daylong workshop will introduce youth ages 12-18 to hydroponic or indoor gardening. Sponsored by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service and Fairbanks Soil & Water Conservation District.

Science for Alaska Summer Series
The Geophysical Institute Public Information team is partnering again with Explore Fairbanks and the Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center for the 2nd annual Science for Alaska Summer Series. This Science for Alaska extension series furthers the GI’s investment in public outreach and engagement beyond the long-running Winter Series to reach summer visitors in an off-campus location.
This year, there will be a presentation every second Saturday from June through September starting at 11:30 a.m. The talks will be about 30 minutes long with extended time for Q&A.

Anchorage: Urban Harvest: Mushroom Identification in Alaska
Join us for an overview of common, interesting, and/or edible mushrooms from Southcentral Alaska and learn how to identify them. We’ll cover the basics of mushroom identification, how to properly prepare them for the table, and precautions for eating mushrooms from the wild. Participants are encouraged to bring in mushrooms from their yards or the woods for discussion and ID. Free. Registration required.
Kate Mohatt is the founder of the Turnagain Arm Mycological Society and the Girdwood Fungus Fair, and co-author of Mushrooms of Alaska Field Guide and Mushrooms of National Forests in Alaska. She is a forest ecologist for the Chugach National Forest and has been studying mushrooms in Alaska for over 20 years.

Klawock - Alaska Lumber Grading training
The Alaska Lumber Grading Program provides a certification course to allow small and medium-scale sawmill operators to produce dimension lumber for home construction in Alaska. When the program's conditions are met, the lumber may be accepted as an alternative to grade-stamped lumber for structural applications where required by residential building codes.
A free training workshop for certification is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, in Klawock at the Generations Southeast Community Learning Center, 6565 Boundary Road.
The minimum age to obtain a certificate is 18. No age restriction for attending without getting a certificate.

TOPIC: Exploring a lesser known permafrost geohazard, creep of frozen soils, with a discussion of Lost Creek, Alaska case study. PRESENTER BIO: Matt Bray is a faculty member of the Civil, Geological, and Environmental Engineering department at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He teaches courses in cold regions engineering and geotechnical engineering. He is the current instructor for Arctic Engineering at UAF. He has over 20 years of experience in permafrost and frozen soils covering topics such as permafrost geology, thaw settlement, mechanical properties and behavior, frost heave, and thermal properties. Nanook Grown Equinox Dinner and Beer Pairing
The Office of Sustainability and Alaska Harvest Collaborative will host a dinner featuring student-grown local produce and Fairbanks brewed beer. This event is for those 21 years and older and will be held in The Pub. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased online. Tickets include four small plates and four 6oz beers.
The dinner will feature local products such as produce from the Nanook Grown Reindeer Garden, the Georgeson Botanical Garden, and several local farms, Alaskan salmon, and beer from Humble Roots, Black Spruce Brewing Co. Lat65 and HooDoo Brewery.

Alaska Salmon in a Warming World: From too hot to just warm enough
UAF Associate Professor Peter Westley will discuss the variable role of warming on Alaska’s salmon and its impact on salmon-reliant communities in a free statewide webinar.
In some regions, warm summers are associated with unusual mortality, delayed migrations, and prespawning mortality on the spawning grounds. In other regions, warming is apparently 'just right' and is associated with historically high salmon abundances. In some regions, warming parallels increasingly observed occurrences of salmon in places that historically have been too cold. The talk concludes with a call to action regarding what tangible actions we can take to sustain the 14,000+ year relationship between salmon and people in Alaska.
Westley is associate professor, Wakefield Chair of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, and principle investigator of the Salmonid Evolutionary Ecology and Conservation Lab at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (seec-lab.com).

Zines for Change-Workshop
Join ORCA POD Peer Prevention Educators--Learn to create your own zines, small booklets between 8 and 32 pages long often illustrated with imagery and poetry, etc. Dating back to the 19th century, these charming folded-paper books, called chapbooks were inspired by popular culture and were perfect for mixing visual art and written texts. In the 1970's the zine was coopted by the young punk movement as a way to disseminate information on various punk bands and other information including poetry and photocopy imagery. In this workshop, we will write from prompts and exercises to produce fragments of poetry and prose then blend with stamping, drawing, painting, and collage techniques to make our own individual zines sewn by machine, hand or stapled. Join us to think big in a small way.

Youths from from 4th to 12th grade are invited to the 4-H Grill Master Camp. They will learn about fire safety, food safety, how to start a charcoal grill, how to season meats and how to grill different meats. Youths do not need to be a member of 4-H to attend.
The camp will be held at the Tanana District office of the UAF Cooperative Extension Service, 1000 University Ave. Fairbanks. The cost is $25.

NextGen Food and Climate Symposium
Nancy Fresco, climate change researcher with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, will lead the 2025 NextGen Food and Climate Symposium. Fresco will discuss climate change and its effects on regional and global food security. USDA NextGen scholars from Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii and Guam are invited, along with the public.
The symposium will be from 2-5 p.m. ADT on Thursday, Sept. 25 (https://bit.ly/NextGen9-25) and repeated on Saturday, Sept. 27, also from 2-5 p.m. ADT. (https://bit.ly/NextGen9-27). The event is synchronous and highly interactive, and attendance is mandatory for NextGen scholars.
The full symposium will be three hours long. The first hour (Changes and Challenges) will be for new NextGen Scholars and any guests or members of the public who are less familiar with climate change science and the NextGen program. Arctic Leadership Lecture Series: Janha Lindemuth
Jahna Lindemuth, Alaska’s former attorney general, will share reflections on justice and leadership in Alaska. She led major statewide legal and public safety initiatives and helped secure the exoneration of the Fairbanks Four. A seasoned trial and appellate attorney, she continues to advise Alaska Native corporations on governance and policy. In her talk, Lindemuth will discuss rural justice and the importance of collaboration between the state and Alaska Native tribes in building stronger, more resilient communities. The symposium will be from 2-5 p.m. ADT on Thursday, Sept. 25 (https://bit.ly/NextGen9-25) and repeated on Saturday, Sept. 27, also from 2-5 p.m. ADT. (https://bit.ly/NextGen9-27). The event is synchronous and highly interactive, and attendance is mandatory for NextGen scholars.
The full symposium will be three hours long. The first hour (Changes and Challenges) will be for new NextGen Scholars and any guests or members of the public who are less familiar with climate change science and the NextGen program. Dry Creek: Alaska Lumber Grading training
The Alaska Lumber Grading Program provides a certification course to allow small and medium-scale sawmill operators to produce dimension lumber for home construction in Alaska. When the program's conditions are met, the lumber may be accepted as an alternative to grade-stamped lumber for structural applications where required by residential building codes.
A free training workshop for certification is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Logging and Milling in Dry Creek.
The minimum age to obtain a certificate is 18. No age restriction for attending without getting a certificate.

Zines for Change Workshop
Join ORCA POD Peer Prevention Educators for this Zine Workshop. Learn to create your own zines, small booklets between 8 and 32 pages long often illustrated with imagery and poetry, etc. Dating back to the 19th century, these charming folded-paper books, called chapbooks were inspired by popular culture and were perfect for mixing visual art and written texts. In the 1970's the zine was coopted by the young punk movement as a way to disseminate information on various punk bands and other information including poetry and photocopy imagery. In this workshop, we will write from prompts and exercises to produce fragments of poetry and prose then blend with stamping, drawing, painting, and collage techniques to make our own individual zines sewn by machine, hand or stapled. Join us to think big in a small way.

Arctic Leadership Lecture Series: David Balton
Ambassador David Balton, a veteran diplomat and Arctic policy leader, will discuss how nations and communities cooperate in the rapidly changing North. Balton has played a central role in shaping international agreements on the Arctic Council and Central Arctic Ocean fisheries. He previously served as U.S. deputy assistant secretary for oceans and fisheries and directed the Arctic Executive Steering Committee. In his talk, Balton will reflect on how diplomacy, science, Indigenous Knowledge and stakeholder engagement contribute to Arctic governance and stewardship. This event will be held via Zoom.

Webinar: Houseplants That Thrive
Heidi Rader will lead a webinar about houseplants, which help Alaskans get their gardening fix in the winter. Learn about which plants are easy and which are finicky as well as some ideas on helping managing houseplants while you travel. She will discuss edible, tropical plants as well.
Rader, professor of Extension, directs the Alaska Tribes Extension program, which promotes food sovereignty and security throughout Alaska. She teaches virtual and hands-on workshops on health, wellness, food, and gardening. She partners with Tribes and traditional knowledge holders to offer tribally driven outreach. Heidi has filmed over 70 videos for a series called In the "Alaska Garden with Heidi Rader" and writes the blog, "It Grows in Alaska."

National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week is a campaign recognized by colleges/universities from around the US. It is a public health campaign to educate students about the harms of alcohol.
Do you know the standard drink sizes for alcoholic beverages? Think you can pour yourself the correct amount (no alcohol, of course--we use dyed water :) ? Let's find out! Students are invited to join ORCA POD and The Pub staff, in the Wood Center Mall Area, to learn about alcohol safety and harm reduction. dis/comfort in the North features more than 50 artists from 16 countries. Selected through a call for submissions and by invitation, artists share encounters and intimacies with the North through video, photography, carving, embroidery, an interactive card game, a protest speech, and two-dimensional works printed on photo transparencies. A range of experiences and stories unfold, asking viewers to consider their own dis/comfort and reflect on the broader contexts of how comfort shapes living in and visiting the North. Curated by master’s student Katie Ione Craney, this exhibition is a project for the Arctic & Northern Studies program.
A closing reception will be held Oct. 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the University Art Gallery.
