Alaska Master Gardener course, via Zoom

Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom. Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants. Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Webinar: How much do snow loads on roofs weigh on people’s minds in Anchorage?

Increased amounts of heavy snow and rain on snow at high latitudes are placing a burden on communities and infrastructure. In 2023-2024, 24 buildings in Anchorage collapsed under the weight of snow, resulting in one fatality. Dr. Jennifer Schmidt conducted a survey of 421 Anchorage-area households, asking how concerned they are about snow loads on their roofs. Results of a business survey are also being compiled. She will share the results in a free webinar at noon on Dec. 10. Schmidt is an associate professor of Natural Resource Management and Policy at the University of Alaska Anchorage Institute of Social and Economic Research. The UAF Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy and Dr. Elizabeth Figus are hosting a dialogue on Feb. 27 from 1-5 p.m. called, “Practicing Partnership: co-production and boundary spanning in rural Alaska.” This four-hour dialogue will bring together graduate students, staff, and faculty to discuss the nuts and bolts of implementing co-production and boundary spanning frameworks in research. Dr. Figus will describe details of her experiences with co-production research. Participants will be invited to discuss their experiences and plans for future work. Attendees will walk away with more tools in their toolboxes for future work. Alaska Master Gardener course, via Zoom

Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom. Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants. Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Selling Homemade and Homegrown Food in Alaska

This free workshop will discuss the new Homemade Food Exemption rules. The workshop is for people who have or would like to start a home-based food business, support local foods, or offer homemade foods through their market. The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation significantly revised the rules, formerly called the Alaska Cottage Foods Exemption, in 2024. Knowledge of the new rules will help ensure compliance and help people understand the risks and opportunities associated with homemade foods. In addition, having a food safety mindset on the farm and in the packing area will help you identify on-farm food safety strategies for your market produce.
