Webinar: Native Plant Restoration in Alaska
May is Alaska Native Plant Month. The Alaska Native Plant Society is partnering with the UAF Cooperative Extension Service to host a webinar discussing the use of native plants in ecological restoration projects around Alaska.
The development of public and private lands in Alaska often has had the unintended consequence of spreading invasive species and degrading fish and wildlife habitat. But we can change that. Join this webinar to hear inspiring stories from project leaders at the Alaska Community Foundation, the Chugach National Forest and the Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition who are using native plants to restore local ecosystems.

Spring 2024 Fairbanks Master Gardener Class
This in-person class teaches the fundamentals of gardening in Alaska. Topics include planning, botany, soil science, soil sample interpretation, organic and conventional fertilizer recommendations and much more.
This course aims to train volunteers in the fundamentals of horticulture so that they may serve their communities as "gardening educators." Participants who complete the course and donate a minimum of 40 hours will be awarded the title "Master Gardener."
Registration is available online at bit.ly/FairbanksMG. The fee is $250 and includes materials. Class is limited to a maximum of 40 participants.
Registration closes at 5 p.m. on March 13.
The class meets Wednesdays, March 20-June 5, 5-8 p.m. at the UAF University Park Building, 1000 University Ave. Room 108. The class is led by Tamara Bell, co-teaching with Steve Brown, agriculture, horticulture and natural resources agent for UAF Cooperative Extension Service in Palmer.

Southeast & Coastal Alaska master gardener course
Master gardener training provides a broad horticultural background and includes the topics of botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees/shrubs, flowers and invasive plants. This class is geared specifically for growing conditions in Southeast and coastal Alaska.
To become a master gardener, you must complete 40 hours of horticultural training and, in return, volunteer 40 hours of time.
This course will have opportunities for both face-to-face, in-person activities (in Juneau) and online Zoom sessions, live and recorded.
Participants outside Juneau will attend sessions on Zoom and will be part of a "community hub" with master gardener liaisons to be "eyes on the ground" to help organize, host, arrange, and generally make good gardening happen in YOUR community!

This in-person class teaches the fundamentals of gardening in Alaska. Topics include planning, botany, soil science, soil sample interpretation, organic and conventional fertilizer recommendations and much more.
This course aims to train volunteers in the fundamentals of horticulture so that they may serve their communities as "gardening educators." Participants who complete the course and donate a minimum of 40 hours will be awarded the title "Master Gardener."
Registration is available online at bit.ly/FairbanksMG. The fee is $250 and includes materials. Class is limited to a maximum of 40 participants.
Registration closes at 5 p.m. on March 13.

Fairbanks: 4-H (and Friends) Rodeo Camp 2024
The 2024 4-H (& Friends) Rodeo Camp is scheduled for May 29-31, featuring a talented clinician from Arizona as well as many wonderful local clinicians and volunteers.
The event features a fun, camp-style atmosphere where participants will learn/practice barrels, poles, goat tying and roping. A leather craft project is planned and there will be a group trail ride. Lunch and supper will be offered potluck style.
Camp is sponsored by the Tanana District 4-H Horse Council and will follow 4-H guidelines. It is open to all individuals up to the age of 20 years old, whether or not they are registered with 4-H. Horseback participants must be ages 9+ years old, but horseless participants can be ages 6-20 years old.
Horse camp will be held at the 4 Woods Equestrian Center, 2441 Lawlor Road, in Fairbanks.

BNZ-LTER Ecosystem Modeling workshop
Interested in learning about ecosystem modeling and Arctic ecology? Join our workshops for insights into Arctic carbon cycle, permafrost, and hydrology modeling. The event, hosted by the Bonanza Creek LTER and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, will be a hybrid, 2 days event. The workshop is open to scientists at any career stage, who are interested in learning about ecosystem modeling. No prior experience in ecosystem modeling is required to attend the workshop. Some level of coding will be involved for the second day of the workshop.

T3 Advanced Summer Program Presentations
The annual T3 Summer Program with UAF Upward Bound bring students from around Alaska Rural Communities to engage in college life, learning through STEAM, and community engagement. Take eight composers. Guide them through the wonders of Denali National Park. Lock them away for five days and have them pull random instrumentation out of a hat and then tell them that they have to create a new piece of music. Then give Corvus the challenge of learning eight new pieces in three days. It sounds like a formula for chaos, but every year it yields magic.
