Webinar: Native Plant Restoration in Alaska

May is Alaska Native Plant Month. The Alaska Native Plant Society is partnering with the UAF Cooperative Extension Service to host a webinar discussing the use of native plants in ecological restoration projects around Alaska. The development of public and private lands in Alaska often has had the unintended consequence of spreading invasive species and degrading fish and wildlife habitat. But we can change that. Spring 2024 Fairbanks Master Gardener Class

This in-person class teaches the fundamentals of gardening in Alaska. Topics include planning, botany, soil science, soil sample interpretation, organic and conventional fertilizer recommendations and much more. This course aims to train volunteers in the fundamentals of horticulture so that they may serve their communities as "gardening educators." Participants who complete the course and donate a minimum of 40 hours will be awarded the title "Master Gardener." Registration is available online at bit.ly/FairbanksMG. The fee is $250 and includes materials. Class is limited to a maximum of 40 participants. Registration closes at 5 p.m. on March 13. Master gardener training provides a broad horticultural background and includes the topics of botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees/shrubs, flowers and invasive plants. This class is geared specifically for growing conditions in Southeast and coastal Alaska. To become a master gardener, you must complete 40 hours of horticultural training and, in return, volunteer 40 hours of time.  This course will have opportunities for both face-to-face, in-person activities (in Juneau) and online Zoom sessions, live and recorded. Interested in learning about ecosystem modeling and Arctic ecology? Join our workshops for insights into Arctic carbon cycle, permafrost, and hydrology modeling. Lock them away for five days and have them pull random instrumentation out of a hat and then tell them that they have to create a new piece of music. Palmer - Matanuska Experiment Farm and Extension Center Field Day

This will be a great interactive event! UAF horticulture and agriculture researchers will take you on a tour of the farm fields and plots, explaining the work they are doing and what they hope it will accomplish.
