MFA Exhibition - Amy Edler
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Art Gallery will present “Tear out of me this memory,” an MFA thesis exhibition by Amy Edler, on view March 30–April 10, 2026. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free. Edler’s three-part installation and performance weaves quilting lineage, psychology and somatic ritual through repetitive block printing on unfired porcelain, exploring cycles of creation, destruction and what remains. A public thesis defense will be held Friday, April 3 at 10 a.m. in the BP Design Theater, followed by an opening reception from 5–7 p.m. A live performance will take place Monday, April 6 from 4–6 p.m.

Circumpolar Connections: A Dialogue on Arctic Food Systems
The UAF Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension will host a series of hourlong lunch seminars. Presentations will focus on engaging people in a conversation about the issues their research surrounds, and will be relatively informal and friendly. Join Jim Vinyard, UAF research assistant professor of livestock nutrition, as he explains the fundamentals and helpful information you might need to start raising sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas, reindeer or other small ruminants for meat, milk, packing, fiber or companionship.
He will cover the basic requirements for each species for facilities, nutrition, reproduction, health and welfare. This class will be held in person at the UAF Matanuska Experiment Farm and Extension Center, 1509 S. Georgeson Drive, Palmer, as well as via Zoom.

Guest Artist Demonstration: Matt Hiller
Visiting artist Matt Hiller will lead ceramics demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 1 and 2 in the UAF Ceramics Studio (FAC 415), with a lunch break from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Hiller will share techniques for carving, texturing and surface development, highlighting the relationship between hand, tool and clay. Participants will gain insight into his process-driven approach to functional and sculptural forms.

"Dialectical Behavior Therapy" (DBT) is a skill based workshop that focuses on identifying and changing negative thinking patterns while promoting positive behavior changes. The UAF Department of Art will host the public MFA thesis defense of Amy Edler on Friday, April 3 at 10 a.m. in the BP Design Theater. Edler will discuss her thesis exhibition, “Tear out of me this memory,” a three-part installation and performance that explores quilting lineage, psychology and somatic ritual through repetitive block printing on unfired porcelain. The University of Alaska Fairbanks Art Gallery will present “Tear out of me this memory,” an MFA thesis exhibition by Amy Edler, on view March 30–April 10, 2026. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free. Edler’s three-part installation and performance weaves quilting lineage, psychology and somatic ritual through repetitive block printing on unfired porcelain, exploring cycles of creation, destruction and what remains. A public thesis defense will be held Friday, April 3 at 10 a.m. in the BP Design Theater, followed by an opening reception from 5–7 p.m. A live performance will take place Monday, April 6 from 4–6 p.m.

UAF Theatre & Film invites you to attend a presentation on April 9 from 1-2 p.m. by Chris Reynolds, a sculptor, fabricator, and special effects technician, working in the film and television industry. Reynolds fashions rocks, architectural elements, creatures, terrain, props, special effects, and sets of everything from prehistoric landscapes to sci-fi spaceships. In this talk held in Music 301 of the Fine Arts Complex, Reynolds will discuss the winding path from UAF to the film industry, how sculpture skills translate into real-world jobs, what it’s actually like to work behind the scenes on film sets, and why knowing how to build things is still one of the most valuable skills an artist can have in the age of digital everything.

The Impacts of Mining in Northern Indigenous Areas: Perspectives from South Saepmie, Norway
The Arctic and Northern Studies Program will host guest speaker Linn Mathisen, a Ph.D. student at the University of South-Eastern Norway, for a talk examining the impacts of mining in northern Indigenous regions. Mathisen’s research compares experiences in South Sápmi, Norway, and Interior Alaska, exploring how Indigenous communities perceive mining activities and participate in decision-making processes affecting their lands. Her presentation will focus on the historical and contemporary impacts of mining on Southern Saami communities, highlighting issues of land use, Indigenous rights and resistance, and the importance of incorporating Indigenous knowledge and perspectives in discussions about natural resource development and green transitions. Circumpolar Connections: A Dialogue on Arctic Food Systems
The UAF Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension will host a series of hourlong lunch seminars. Presentations will focus on engaging people in a conversation about the issues their research surrounds, and will be relatively informal and friendly. Delta: Vegetable Variety Trials & Recommendations for Interior Alaska
RESCHEDULED for April 14.
Alaska Variety Trials Program lead research technician Katie DiCristina will hold an in-depth discussion of the ongoing variety trials conducted at the UAF Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station in Fairbanks and Palmer.
Learn about hardiness, production yield, and taste of numerous varieties of several common garden vegetables. Each seed variety tested is commercially available and easily obtained. Learn about planting times and methods used during the research for the best yield results. This is an invaluable opportunity for our region. If you are planning a garden for personal use or retail sale, you won't want to miss this free event.
A small sampling of free seed will be distributed to participants to get you started.

Webinar: Alaska’s Growing Mariculture Industry
Mariculture — the cultivation of marine life such as shellfish and seaweeds — is an emerging and expanding sector in Alaska.
In this free presentation, Melissa “Missy” Good, a mariculture specialist with Alaska Sea Grant, will provide an overview of Alaska’s mariculture industry and its role in strengthening coastal economies and food security. She will highlight which species are being cultivated, including kelp and shellfish, and explore how these products move from sea to table. In addition to being nutritious foods, kelp and other seaweeds are used in a wide range of products, including fertilizers, animal feeds, biostimulants, food ingredients, and emerging biomaterials — creating new economic opportunities beyond direct consumption.

Palmer: Farming on a Human Scale: Biointensive Methods & Productivity
Brandi Jo Nyberg will discuss methods, systems and tools used for biointensive, diversified vegetable production in a lunchtime presentation.
Biointensive farming involves maximizing small acreage to produce large amounts of food, with care for the soil at its core. Methods discussed will include bed sizing and spacing, essential tools, interplanting, and soil/plant health.
Brandi Jo Nyberg is the owner of Sauntering Roots Farm, a diversified vegetable operation that grows more than 30 varieties with less than an acre in production.
This class will be held in person at the UAF Matanuska Experiment Farm and Extension Center, 1509 S. Georgeson Drive, Palmer, as well as via Zoom.
