"The Sick" BFA Thesis Exhibition by Kevin Carroll
The UAF Department of Art presents The Sick, a thesis exhibition by Bachelor of Fine Arts student Kevin M. Carroll, on view Nov. 3-14 at the University Art Gallery. An opening reception will be held Nov. 7 from 5-7 p.m. Through 45 layered pastel and oil paintings, Carroll explores addiction, poverty, and trauma using data and personal reflection, translating survey responses and lived experience into vivid visual forms.

Ex-Typhoon Halong: The Weather and Climate Story
Join the UAF Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Preparedness for this month’s ACCAP webinar about ex-Typhoon Halong and the catastrophic flooding and damaging winds it brought to parts of western Alaska, particularly across the Kuskokwim Delta region. The webinar will focus on the weather and climate aspects of this exceptional event. ACCAP will also discuss the evolution of the storm, how unusual it was for a former typhoon to take this track so far north, how rare storms of this strength are in the eastern Bering Sea, and how weather forecast models performed leading up to the event. Palmer: Composting for Beginners
Learn the basics of composting, which creates a great soil amendment and keeps materials from going to the landfill. Caley Gasch, a University of Alaska Fairbanks Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station soil scientist, will build a mini compost pile as a demonstration.
This lunch-and-learn event is available in person and via Zoom. The in-person class will be in Kertulla Hall, Room 208, at the Matanuska Experiment Station and Extension Center, 1509 S. Georgeson Drive, Palmer.

Fairbanks: StrongPeople Strong Bodies advanced strength training program
THIS CLASS IN NOW FULL. REGISTRATION IS CLOSED.
The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (a.k.a. StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) advanced strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults by increasing muscle strength and bone density, improving balance and preventing falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Light hand and leg weights are available in class. Participants should purchase weights to use at home. Participants will be standing, sitting or on the floor for exercises. Dress in comfortable clothing and wear low-heeled, sturdy shoes or sneakers should be worn.
This is a continuing advanced class and the new session dates are Sept. 30-Dec. 18, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2-3:30 p.m.

Using proteomic and isotopic data, this project aims to create osteobiographies of health, disease, and survival during historically known migrations and periods of economic change. I will examine variation in preservation and protein expression in dental samples from modern experiments, Archaic Greece, and Gold-Rush-era California. Contextualized with archaeological and historical data, these studies explore the limits and power of biomolecular archaeology to illuminate past lived experiences and inform broader anthropological questions about inequality, resilience, and human adaptation. Javier Davara, a visiting Ph.D. student from the University of La Laguna, Spain, presents “Decoding Neanderthal Behavior through Lipid Biomarkers: New Perspectives in Molecular Archaeology.” Davara’s research at the ADAPt Lab (UAF) examines lipid residues from the Neanderthal site of El Salt in southeastern Spain to explore ancient pyrotechnology and tool use. His work highlights how lipid biomarkers—exceptionally preserved molecular traces—offer new insights into Neanderthal activities, hearth functions, and Palaeolithic lifeways. Historical Comical is a bold, devised theatre production from Theatre UAF that dives into the ambition, absurdity, and contradictions of power through two sharply reimagined Shakespeare pieces. Act I offers a dreamlike, haunting take on Henry V, where heroic speeches cloak a ruthless pursuit of conquest, crafted and performed by UAF students and community actors. Act II erupts into The Comedy of Errors, a wild farce of mistaken identities set against the chaos of a tariff war, complete with mask work and mayhem. With live music, vibrant lighting, and imaginative use of UAF’s stock materials, this “Blanket Fort Theatre” brings history into sharp, hilarious focus. Rooted in the spirit of Fairbanks, Historical Comical explores the relevance of Shakespeare’s themes in today’s world — questioning authority, finding joy in chaos, and celebrating community.

The B3 (Better Bones & Balance) program offers a mix of strength and power training and group fitness activities for people with osteoporosis, osteopenia or a risk of future low bone density. Participants will learn a research-based exercise/education program proven to maintain or increase bone density. This program is for people comfortable working out in a gym with weights.

Fairbanks: StrongPeople Strong Bodies beginning strength training program
The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (aka StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) beginning strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults to increase muscle strength and bone density, improve balance and prevent falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Light hand and leg weights are available in class. Participants should purchase weights to use at home. Participants will be standing, sitting or on the floor for exercises. Dress in comfortable clothing and wear low-heeled, sturdy shoes or sneakers should be worn.
This class is designed for beginners and will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. Sept. 29-Dec. 17,

Hosted by the UAF Department of History and the Arctic and Northern Studies Program, this event features a screening of Yintah, a documentary spanning more than a decade. The film follows Howilhkat Freda Huson and Sleydo’ Molly Wickham as they lead efforts to reoccupy and protect Wet’suwet’en ancestral lands from encroachment by the Canadian government and major fossil fuel companies. Scott Sanford, an emeritus distinguished outreach specialist for the Rural Energy Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will present talks with Art Nash, UAF Cooperative Extension Service energy specialist, on produce storage, cellar accessibility and using greenhouse heat to extend the growing season. Fairbanks: Canning Fish in Jars
Leslie Shallcross with the UAF Cooperative Extension Service will present a class on preserving fish in canning jars. Participants will learn the proper use and care of a pressure canner and the steps for jarring Alaska fish to make a high-quality and safe product. Each participant will jar one pint of salmon.

Webinar: Invasive Species Spotlight Series - the European Green Crab
Tammy Davis, invasive species coordinator with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, will lead a free Zoom presentation on the European Green crab, threats they pose to Alaska nearshore environments, how Alaska partners are addressing the invasion and where green crab have been detected to date.
Coastal Alaska communities and natural resource agencies have been involved in early detection monitoring for marine invasive species since the early 2000s. In 2022, the invasive European green crab was first detected in Tamgas Harbor, Annette Islands Reserve. Invasive green crab are aggressive, tolerate a wide spectrum of environmental conditions and have a high rate of reproduction making them successful invaders.
As ecosystem engineers, they transform their environment to meet their needs and disrupt the balance of the system in the process.

Zines for Change with ORCA POD
Join ORCA POD Peer Prevention Educators for this Zine Workshop. Learn to create your own zines, small booklets between 8 and 32 pages long often illustrated with imagery and poetry, etc. Dating back to the 19th century, these charming folded-paper books, called chapbooks were inspired by popular culture and were perfect for mixing visual art and written texts. In the 1970's the zine was coopted by the young punk movement as a way to disseminate information on various punk bands and other information including poetry and photocopy imagery. In this workshop, we will write from prompts and exercises to produce fragments of poetry and prose then blend with stamping, drawing, painting, and collage techniques to make our own individual zines sewn by machine, hand or stapled. Delta Junction: 2025 Delta Harvest Wrap-up
The Delta Harvest Wrap-Up is an annual event that brings researchers focused on Alaska's agricultural research priorities together with area farmers to give updates on their various projects. Researchers are from UAF's Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension and the USDA's Agricultural Research Service. It also provides producers with an opportunity to share their thoughts on research priorities. It is a free event held at the Delta Career Advancement Center, 1696 N Clearwater Ave. Delta Junction.
The UAF Cooperative Extension Service and Salcha-Delta Soil and Water Conservation District co-host the event.

Start your weekend off with the perfect sweet and spicy treat — cinnamon rolls! In this in-person workshop in Sitka, participants will make and sample pillowy cinnamon rolls hot from the oven and also take a tray home to bake later that week (if they last that long!) Experiment with flavors from classic bold cinnamon, seasonal pumpkin, wild berries and of course ... for those who know Paula ... chocolate.

This workshop will be led by local foodie, Paula Veshti, who is enrolled in the Dietetics Master’s Program at UAA. Fairbanks: StrongPeople Strong Bodies beginning strength training program
The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (aka StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) beginning strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults to increase muscle strength and bone density, improve balance and prevent falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Light hand and leg weights are available in class. Participants should purchase weights to use at home. Participants will be standing, sitting or on the floor for exercises. Dress in comfortable clothing and wear low-heeled, sturdy shoes or sneakers should be worn.

Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants.
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. from Dec. 2 to Feb. 27, 2026, with a break for the holidays. Master Gardeners of Tanana Valley
Join us for our monthly meeting, where we'll discuss new topics, grow our skills and connect with fellow gardeners. This is a great opportunity to learn, share, and socialize with our community. This group meets on the first Tuesday of each month.
What to expect:
Education: Each month features an educational presentation from a guest speaker or one of our own master gardeners. We'll cover a wide range of topics, including pest management, soil health, plant propagation, and more.

Fairbanks: StrongPeople Strong Bodies beginning strength training program
The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (aka StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) beginning strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults to increase muscle strength and bone density, improve balance and prevent falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Light hand and leg weights are available in class. Participants should purchase weights to use at home. Participants will be standing, sitting or on the floor for exercises. Dress in comfortable clothing and wear low-heeled, sturdy shoes or sneakers should be worn.
This class is designed for beginners and will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. Sept. 29-Dec. 17,
