Slippery sources: Some Pages from the First Atlas of Siberia

Ice formations can be as elusive as maps. Historian Erika Monahan examines what several 17th-century maps reveal — and do not reveal — about the history of sea ice. The talk draws from Monahan’s book project on the first atlas of Siberia, compiled in the late 1600s, which mapped vast and sparsely known regions of Eurasia. Placing the atlas in its Russian imperial context, the talk also considers how historical knowledge of ice resonates amid contemporary Arctic warming and geopolitical change.
