The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (aka StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) beginning strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults to increase muscle strength and bone density, improve balance and prevent falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Light hand and leg weights are available in class. Participants should purchase weights to use at home. Participants will be standing, sitting or on the floor for exercises. Dress in comfortable clothing and wear low-heeled, sturdy shoes or sneakers should be worn.

Alaska Master Gardener course, via Zoom
Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom.
Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants.
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. from Dec. 2 to Feb. 27, 2026, with a break for the holidays. Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies monthly meeting

The meeting will feature guest speaker Samantha Botz, who will discuss how 19th-century female mycologists such as Beatrix Potter and Anna Maria Hussey used botanical illustration to challenge norms around gender, science, and aesthetics. GINA and ASF, in partnership with ACCAP, will be hosting a Virtual Alaska Weather Symposium (VAWS) webinar in December on Weather and Avalanche Forecasting in Southcentral Alaska. Carson Jones, lead meteorologist for the National Weather Service, Anchorage, and Mik Dalpes, avalanche specialist for the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center, will examine the complexities of forecasting mountain weather in Alaska and its impacts on snowpack evolution, avalanche hazard, and operational forecasting. It will detail the analytical tools, model guidance, and observational networks used by meteorologists and avalanche forecasters to assess and communicate risk, forecast confidence, and uncertainty across Southcentral Alaska.

It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants.
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants.
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Palette knife painting, sometimes referred to as “impasto” painting, is a fun and engaging way to create paintings with a beautifully textured and sculptural surface. Work with artist Allison Juneau to learn methods of mixing and applying paint with a knife, silicone tools, and even household items to create interesting textures. This workshop is suitable for both new and experienced painters, and participants can work with either oils or acrylics.

Circumpolar Connections: A Dialogue on Arctic Food Systems
The UAF Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension will host a series of hourlong lunch seminars. Presentations will focus on engaging people in a conversation about the issues their research surrounds, and will be relatively informal and friendly. Alaska Master Gardener course, via Zoom
Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom.
Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants.
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. from Dec. 2 to Feb. 27, 2026, with a break for the holidays. The cost is $250, which includes a copy of "Alaska's Sustainable Gardening Handbook."…

Master Gardeners of Tanana Valley
Join us for our monthly meeting, where we'll discuss new topics, grow our skills and connect with fellow gardeners. This is a great opportunity to learn, share, and socialize with our community. This group meets on the first Tuesday of each month.

Education: Each month features an educational presentation from a guest speaker or one of our own master gardeners. We'll cover a wide range of topics, including pest management, soil health, plant propagation, and more.
Business meeting: We'll briefly discuss important updates, upcoming events, and volunteer opportunities.
