The UAF Department of Art presents The Sick, a thesis exhibition by Bachelor of Fine Arts student Kevin M. Carroll, on view Nov. 3-14 at the University Art Gallery. The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (a.k.a. StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) advanced strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults by increasing muscle strength and bone density, improving balance and preventing falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Light hand and leg weights are available in class. Participants should purchase weights to use at home. Participants will be standing, sitting or on the floor for exercises. Dress in comfortable clothing and wear low-heeled, sturdy shoes or sneakers should be worn.
This is a continuing advanced class and the new session dates are Sept. 30-Dec. 18, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2-3:30 p.m.

Fairbanks: Canning Meat in Jars
Leslie Shallcross with the UAF Cooperative Extension Service will present a class on preserving meat in canning jars. This is a hands-on class for adults through the Becoming an Outdoor Woman Program, sponsored by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Students will learn how to use a pressure canner and learn correct techniques and considerations when jarring game meat. Each student will jar 1 pint of meat.
Class will be held Nov. 4, 5-9 p.m. at the UAF University Park Building, 1000 University Ave. Room 154.

In times of plenty, we need to prepare for times of scarcity. This class outlines how to start, maintain, and rotate a long-term, emergency pantry based on the foods your household already enjoys.
Attendees will also learn strategies to prevent food loss due to freezer or power failure and steps they can take to preserve food should a failure occur. The class is led by UAF Cooperative Extension Service health, home and family development agent Sarah Lewis.

Master Gardeners of Tanana Valley

The B3 (Better Bones & Balance) program offers a mix of strength and power training and group fitness activities for people with osteoporosis, osteopenia or a risk of future low bone density. Participants will learn a research-based exercise/education program proven to maintain or increase bone density. This program is for people comfortable working out in a gym with weights.

The Impact of Abortion Restrictions on Violence Against Women
Planned Parenthood challenged Alaska's ban on advanced practice clinicians providing abortion care in a 2019 lawsuit. Dr. Ingrid Johnson, an expert witness, will discuss how the ban affects survivors of intimate partner violence, especially in rural Alaska. Join her for a review of her testimony exploring the link between IPV and abortion access. A Zoom option is available for those who cannot attend in person.

Mendenhall: The Prepared Pantry
In times of plenty, we need to prepare for times of scarcity. This class outlines how to start, maintain, and rotate a long-term, emergency pantry based on the foods your household already enjoys.
Attendees will also learn strategies to prevent food loss due to freezer or power failure and steps they can take to preserve food should a failure occur. The class is led by UAF Cooperative Extension Service health, home and family development agent Sarah Lewis.

Petra Banks, a forensic anthropologist with the UAF Department of Anthropology, will present “Identifying Victims of The Great Terror (1936–1938) in Batumi, Georgia: Excavation, Analysis and Repatriation of Victims from a Stalin-Era Mass Grave.” Her talk explores the challenges of excavating and identifying victims of Soviet political repression, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the Georgian Recovery, Documentation and Identification Project. The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (aka StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) beginning strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults to increase muscle strength and bone density, improve balance and prevent falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.

Remaining Native a Documentary Screening
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of History, Phi Alpha Theta, the Center for Cross-Cultural Studies, and Arctic and Northern Studies will host a screening of “Remaining Native” in Schaible Auditorium. The documentary follows Ku Stevens, a rising Native American athlete, as he pursues his dream of collegiate running while confronting his family’s intergenerational trauma rooted in the Indian boarding school era. Palmer: Composting for Beginners
Learn the basics of composting, which creates a great soil amendment and keeps materials from going to the landfill. Caley Gasch, a University of Alaska Fairbanks Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station soil scientist, will build a mini compost pile as a demonstration.
This lunch-and-learn event is available in person and via Zoom. The in-person class will be in Kertulla Hall, Room 208, at the Matanuska Experiment Station and Extension Center, 1509 S. Georgeson Drive, Palmer.

The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (a.k.a. StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) advanced strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults by increasing muscle strength and bone density, improving balance and preventing falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Light hand and leg weights are available in class. Participants should purchase weights to use at home. Participants will be standing, sitting or on the floor for exercises. Dress in comfortable clothing and wear low-heeled, sturdy shoes or sneakers should be worn.
This is a continuing advanced class and the new session dates are Sept. 30-Dec. 18, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2-3:30 p.m.

Javier Davara, a visiting Ph.D. student from the University of La Laguna, Spain, presents “Decoding Neanderthal Behavior through Lipid Biomarkers: New Perspectives in Molecular Archaeology.” Davara’s research at the ADAPt Lab (UAF) examines lipid residues from the Neanderthal site of El Salt in southeastern Spain to explore ancient pyrotechnology and tool use. His work highlights how lipid biomarkers—exceptionally preserved molecular traces—offer new insights into Neanderthal activities, hearth functions, and Palaeolithic lifeways. Fairbanks: StrongPeople Strong Bodies beginning strength training program
The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (aka StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) beginning strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults to increase muscle strength and bone density, improve balance and prevent falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Light hand and leg weights are available in class. Participants should purchase weights to use at home. Participants will be standing, sitting or on the floor for exercises. Dress in comfortable clothing and wear low-heeled, sturdy shoes or sneakers should be worn.

Hosted by the UAF Department of History and the Arctic and Northern Studies Program, this event features a screening of Yintah, a documentary spanning more than a decade. The film follows Howilhkat Freda Huson and Sleydo’ Molly Wickham as they lead efforts to reoccupy and protect Wet’suwet’en ancestral lands from encroachment by the Canadian government and major fossil fuel companies. Yintah offers a powerful look at Indigenous resistance, environmental justice, and the ongoing struggle over pipelines and sovereignty in northwestern British Columbia.

Leslie Shallcross with the UAF Cooperative Extension Service will present a class on preserving fish in canning jars. Participants will learn the proper use and care of a pressure canner and the steps for jarring Alaska fish to make a high-quality and safe product. Each participant will jar one pint of salmon.

Fairbanks: StrongPeople Strong Bodies beginning strength training program
The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (aka StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) beginning strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults to increase muscle strength and bone density, improve balance and prevent falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Light hand and leg weights are available in class. Participants should purchase weights to use at home. Participants will be standing, sitting or on the floor for exercises. Dress in comfortable clothing and wear low-heeled, sturdy shoes or sneakers should be worn.
This class is designed for beginners and will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. Sept. 29-Dec. 17,

Juneau: B3 Fitness - Better Bones and Balance with bands
The B3 (Better Bones & Balance) program offers a mix of strength and power training and group fitness activities for people with osteoporosis, osteopenia or a risk of future low bone density. Participants will learn a research-based exercise/education program proven to maintain or increase bone density. B3 with bands is for those who want to learn workouts to do independently at home.
Participants will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays from Oct. 27-Nov. 19 at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School commons, 1600 Renninger St. Juneau.

Zines for Change with ORCA POD
Join ORCA POD Peer Prevention Educators for this Zine Workshop. Learn to create your own zines, small booklets between 8 and 32 pages long often illustrated with imagery and poetry, etc. Dating back to the 19th century, these charming folded-paper books, called chapbooks were inspired by popular culture and were perfect for mixing visual art and written texts. In the 1970's the zine was coopted by the young punk movement as a way to disseminate information on various punk bands and other information including poetry and photocopy imagery. In this workshop, we will write from prompts and exercises to produce fragments of poetry and prose then blend with stamping, drawing, painting, and collage techniques to make our own individual zines sewn by machine, hand or stapled. Join us to think big in a small way.

Delta Junction: 2025 Delta Harvest Wrap-up
The Delta Harvest Wrap-Up is an annual event that brings researchers focused on Alaska's agricultural research priorities together with area farmers to give updates on their various projects. Researchers are from UAF's Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension and the USDA's Agricultural Research Service. It also provides producers with an opportunity to share their thoughts on research priorities. It is a free event held at the Delta Career Advancement Center, 1696 N Clearwater Ave. Delta Junction.
