Palmer Lunch & Learn: Use GPS/GIS to navigate the backcountry
Learn to use a GPS receiver for navigation, or add to your knowledge for safer backcountry travel in a free in-person and virtual presentation.
Nelson Crone, farm director at the Matanuska Experiment Farm and Extension Center in Palmer, will provide a basic overview of GPS use for navigation, plus tips and best practices oriented for recreational travel in Alaska. Crone has a background in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and is an avid outdoorsman.
The presentation will be in person in room 208 of Kerttula Hall at the Matanuska Experiment Farm and Extension Center, 1509 S. Georgeson Drive, Palmer, or via Zoom.

Alaska Master Gardener course, via Zoom
Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom.
Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants.
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. from Dec. 2 to Feb. 27, 2026, with a break for the holidays. Circumpolar Connections: A Dialogue on Arctic Food Systems
The UAF Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension will host a series of hourlong lunch seminars. Presentations will focus on engaging people in a conversation about the issues their research surrounds, and will be relatively informal and friendly. Men and women experience a decrease in bone density with age, increasing the risk of broken bones and frailty. In this class, participants will learn about eating with bone health in mind as well as exercising to maintain bone density and improve balance. Women should understand these preventive strategies in their 30s and men in their 50s, but it's never too early or too late in life to improve bone health.
This free class is offered from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Jan. 13 at Mendenhall Valley Public Library, 3025 Diamond Park Loop, Juneau. The class will be repeated from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Jan. 15 at Juneau Public Library, 292 Marine Way, Juneau.

Justice Welcome Back Party
The UAF Justice Department will host a welcome back party in January to kick off the spring semester. Students are invited to enjoy free food, connect with peers, and build community. Alaska Master Gardener course, via Zoom
Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom.
Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants.
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. from Dec. 2 to Feb. 27, 2026, with a break for the holidays. This three-day course is for Alaskans preparing for the certified pesticide exam with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Alaska Master Gardener course, via Zoom
Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom.
Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants.
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. from Dec. 2 to Feb. 27, 2026, with a break for the holidays. Hunting Yellow Pigs Screening
Hunting Yellow Pigs is a 2025 documentary film about a how curiosity, and a passion for puzzles and the joys of doing mathematics can and has changed lives. It is the story of how, without a Ph.D. one man has had perhaps the greatest influence on modern American mathematics by building a five-decade-old youth summer program that is a paragon of questing for knowledge.

Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom.
Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants.
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. from Dec. 2 to Feb. 27, 2026, with a break for the holidays. Circumpolar Connections: A Dialogue on Arctic Food Systems
The UAF Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension will host a series of hourlong lunch seminars. Presentations will focus on engaging people in a conversation about the issues their research surrounds, and will be relatively informal and friendly. Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom.
Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants.
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. from Dec. 2 to Feb. 27, 2026, with a break for the holidays. Practicing partnership: co-production and boundary spanning in rural Alaska
The UAF Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy and Dr. Elizabeth Figus are hosting a dialogue on Feb. 27 from 1-5 p.m. called, “Practicing Partnership: co-production and boundary spanning in rural Alaska.” This four-hour dialogue will bring together graduate students, staff, and faculty to discuss the nuts and bolts of implementing co-production and boundary spanning frameworks in research. Dr. Figus will describe details of her experiences with co-production research. Participants will be invited to discuss their experiences and plans for future work.
Attendees will walk away with more tools in their toolboxes for future work. Graduate students will gain insight into what it might look like for them to do this sort of work during and after graduate school, what they should know, and how to get the support they need.
The event will be held in person in Akasofu 401 for participants in Fairbanks, and virtually for anyone joining from the rural campuses.

Alaska Master Gardener course, via Zoom
Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom.
Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants.
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. from Dec. 2 to Feb. 27, 2026, with a break for the holidays. The Delta Farm Forum is an annual event for the Interior Alaska agriculture and farming community. The 2026 event is the 54th annual forum. Throughout the day, relevant information will be presented from agricultural producers, scientists and researchers, representatives from businesses and agricultural agencies.
