Palmer: Wood Science & Lumber Drying Workshop
A two-day wood-drying workshop will teach participants tools and techniques for drying lumber in Alaska to maximize yield and quality, while managing loss from warping, splitting and decay. Taught by Frederik Laleicke, assistant professor and wood products extension specialist, North Carolina State University. Equipment options for every budget will be considered. Learn about options for moisture meters and how to get good value and accurate results. Wood-drying kilns, from off-the-shelf to do-it-yourself models. StrongWomen/StrongPeople Strength Training Program is a progressive strength-training program designed for midlife and older adults by increasing muscle strength and bone density, improving balance and preventing falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.
Light hand and leg weights are available in class. Participants should purchase weights to use at home. Participants will be standing, sitting or on the floor for exercises. Dress in comfortable clothing and wear low-heeled, sturdy shoes or sneakers should be worn. 18 and older.

Seeding directly into the garden is the sixth of 11 weekly webinars covering the basics of growing vegetables in Alaska.
Casey Matney, the Kenai-based agriculture and horticulture agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the free classes. Topics include seed starting, soil testing, raised beds, planting potatoes, hardening off seedlings and transplanting them, and composting.

Get the Buzz on Pollinators in Alaska
Learn more about the little critters essential to the success of your gardens, our food security, and ecosystems as a whole. Sabrina Farmer, a biologist with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will talk about Alaska's pollinators and tips for improving your gardening habits to support them. Why do pollinators need our help? Many pollinating insect populations are declining across the world.
Farmer focuses on pollinator conservation, outreach and education, and environmental policy implementation. She is leading work on the endangered Aleutian shield fern and a species status assessment for Suckley's Cuckoo Bumble Bee.
May is Alaska Native Plant Month. "Get the Buzz on Pollinators in Alaska" is the second in a series of free webinars highlighting Alaska native plants, their uses and diversity. Delta Junction: Enhancing Pollinator Habitat with Native Alaska Plants
<p data-pm-slice="1 1 []">In this class, Anchorage entomologist Alex Wenninger with the UAF Cooperative Extension Service will discuss how to create a thriving community of nectar-rich native plants. Planting and landscaping with native species have several benefits. Native species are adapted to our local climate and have better survival and growth than most exotic species, and are often preferred by pollinators over the many imported, invasive varieties.
Beginning in the classroom at the Delta Career Advancement Center, 1696 N. Clearwater Ave. Delta Junction and moving (weather permitting) to the Salcha-Delta Soil and Water Conservation District native plant propagation center.
Dress warmly, as May weather can be unpredictable. Bring your lunch and gardening gloves. All other materials will be provided. Class length may vary, depending on conditions.

Planting potatoes is the seventh of 11 weekly webinars covering the basics of growing vegetables in Alaska.
Casey Matney, the Kenai-based agriculture and horticulture agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the free classes. Topics include seed starting, soil testing, raised beds, planting potatoes, hardening off seedlings and transplanting them, and composting.

Anchorage Urban Harvest: Bee Hotel Making Workshop
Every type of pollinator needs a place to rest to thrive. Learn about cavity-nesting pollinators in Alaska and make a cavity nest home in partnership with UAF Cooperative Extension Service and the Tool Library @ Seed Lab.
Cooperative Extension entomologist Alex Wenninger will discuss the diversity of cavity-nesting bees and wasps in Alaska, as well as important considerations for constructing and maintaining nest boxes. Through hands-on demonstration and guidance, participants will create their own nest boxes to take home using the materials and tools provided.
The Tool Library at Seed Lab is a community resource dedicated to enriching the existing community through sustainability and resource sharing. The Seed Lab is an Anchorage Museum project focused on programming around climate, community, connections and change.

Lasagna gardening is a tried-and-true method for creating a productive garden space on untilled land. Native Plants as Food and Medicine
Vivian Yéilk’ Mork, a Tlingit traditional foods and medicine educator, will share how Alaska Native cultures use seasonal knowledge, ecological observation and cultural protocols to harvest Native plants for food and medicine.
Vivian was born in Wrangell, but her clan is from Hoonah. She is Raven Moiety from the T’akdeintáan clan, Snail House. Her Tlingit name is Yéilk’ Cute-Little-Raven. Vivian has a master's degree in cross-cultural studies with an emphasis in indigenous knowledge systems. She is a traditional foods and medicine educator and has been teaching for almost 25 years.
May is Alaska Native Plant Month. "Native Plants as Food and Medicine" is the third in a series of free webinars highlighting Alaska native plants, their uses and diversity. The series is a collaboration between the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service and the Alaska Native Plant Society and available statewide.

Warming things up with plastic, glass and plastic mulch webinar
Warming things up with plastic, glass and plastic mulch is the ninth of 11 weekly webinars covering the basics of growing vegetables in Alaska.
Casey Matney, the Kenai-based agriculture and horticulture agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the free classes. Topics include seed starting, soil testing, raised beds, planting potatoes, hardening off seedlings and transplanting them, and composting.

Webinar: Selecting Lilacs for Your Yard
Join horticulturist Julie Riley for a presentation highlighting lilacs in Southcentral Alaska and learn which lilacs are best suited for your yard. Julie's talk will also include suggestions on why your lilac doesn't bloom and a few tips on pruning.
The adage, "right plant for the right place," holds true when it comes to planting lilacs. Do you want a plant that will stay short, or one that you can see blooming out of your second-story window? Do you want the deepest purple flower color or burgundy fall foliage?
Riley was a horticulture agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service for over 35 years. Certified Food Protection Manager class
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service is offering a Certified Food Protection Manager class that will cover material required to pass the National Restaurant Association's ServSafe Manager exam for Alaska.
A certified food protection manager is responsible for monitoring and managing all food establishment operations to ensure compliance with regulations. State regulations require that all food establishments have at least one certified food protection manager on staff.
The class is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a lunch break. The class is available statewide via Zoom or in person at the Tanana District Cooperative Extension office, 1000 University Ave. Fairbanks. The Zoom link will be emailed to participants one week before the class.
The $200 fee includes instruction, the training manual and one proctored certification exam, with proctors in Fairbanks, Juneau, Sitka and other communities upon request. In some locations, the proctored exam will take place immediately…

Fairbanks: StrongPeople leader training
This training will prepare participants to lead StrongPeople/StrongWomen exercise classes in nonprofit community settings.
StrongPeople/StrongWomen is a progressive strength-training program designed for midlife and older adults by increasing muscle strength and bone density, improving balance and preventing falls.
Trainees should have strength trained for at least four weeks prior to the leader course; must have the ability to obtain a CPR certification. They must attend an ongoing StrongPeople class at least twice after training completion.
The training will be 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, June 14 at 1000 University Ave. Room 108, Fairbanks,

Homer: Canner Gauge Testing and Informational Booth
The Cooperative Extension Service will be at the Homer Farmers Market on June 14 to test canner gauges for free. Dial gauges on pressure canners need to be tested for accuracy every year. Just bring your gauge! We can test even if it's still attached to the lid, but we don't need the whole pressure cooker.
The Homer Farmers Market welcomes all growers of farm, garden and greenhouse produce to participate in a weekly market. The Homer Farmers Market was established in 2000 to help develop a sustainable local agricultural community for the benefit of the broader Kachemak Bay area community.

Composting: No time to waste is the last of 11 weekly webinars covering the basics of growing vegetables in Alaska.
Casey Matney, the Kenai-based agriculture and horticulture agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the free classes. Topics include seed starting, soil testing, raised beds, planting potatoes, hardening off seedlings and transplanting them, and composting.

All plants are susceptible to disease. Disease can be caused by biotic (bacteria, fungi, viruses) and abiotic (non-living, environmental) means. Join this free webinar on June 18 from 12 to 1 p.m. Todd Steinlage, a plant pathologist with the Alaska Plant Materials Center, will discuss common diseases in Alaska and management options for them.
The Plant Materials Center is part of the Alaska Division of Agriculture. Todd has worked in plant pathology for 27 years and works with bacteria, fungi, viruses, and abiotic diseases. He has a master's degree in plant pathology from Iowa State University.

2025 Midnight Sun Run 10K
The Midnight Sun Run 10K is a uniquely Alaskan event, attracting participants from all over the world. The race begins at 10PM on the Saturday closest to the summer solstice. Starting at the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus, participants wind 6.2 miles through area neighborhoods lined with thousands of high-spirited spectators. The course ends at Pioneer Park, where the festivities continue until well after midnight.
The race is chip timed, with an elite runner corral that allows serious runners a place at the head of the race, while also supporting every pace and ability. The costumed division is perhaps one of the most anticipated aspects of the race, showcasing true Fairbanks creativity.

Certified Food Protection Manager class
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service is offering a Certified Food Protection Manager class that will cover material required to pass the National Restaurant Association's ServSafe Manager exam for Alaska.
A certified food protection manager is responsible for monitoring and managing all food establishment operations to ensure compliance with regulations. State regulations require that all food establishments have at least one certified food protection manager on staff.
The class is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a lunch break. The class is available statewide via Zoom or in person at the Tanana District Cooperative Extension office, 1000 University Ave. Fairbanks. The Zoom link will be emailed to participants one week before the class.
The $200 fee includes instruction, the training manual and one proctored certification exam, with proctors in Fairbanks, Juneau, Sitka and other communities upon request. In some locations, the proctored exam will take place immediately…
