Field Guide to Science Metrics
Join us for virtual workshop open to all on common research metrics, including journal impact factor, h-index, and alternative metrics used to represent citation counts and engagement. The session focuses on critically interpreting metrics, questioning their assumptions, and recognizing their limits as indicators of research quality or impact.

Monitoring and Communicating Glacier Outburst Flood Hazards from Mendenhall Glacier
GINA and ASF, in partnership with ACCAP, will be hosting a Virtual Alaska Weather Symposium webinar in February on glacier outburst flood hazards. Eran Hood, Professor of Environmental Science at the University of Alaska Southeast, will discuss the dynamics of glacier outburst floods, including how they are evolving over time and how flood hazards are communicated to Juneau residents, as there have been increased outburst floods in the Mendenhall Valley.

LEO Network – Helping to Understand Environmental Vulnerability and Change
Join the Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Preparedness at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24 for a webinar about the Local Environmental Observer (LEO) Network. The LEO Network was originally developed as a tele-consultation tool, to provide referrals on questions related to wildlife, plant, weather or community change. It is only in recent years that the platform has been applied to describe broader trends. This presentation will explore how to use LEO Network as a measure of environmental change at the local and regional level. Register here.

Underwater storms: How harmful algal blooms form and their impacts on Alaska's oceans
GINA and ASF, in partnership with ACCAP, will be hosting a Virtual Alaska Weather Symposium webinar in March on harmful algal blooms (HABs). Dr. Thomas Farrugia, Scientific Program Manager, AOOS, Alaska Harmful Algal Bloom Network Coordinator, will discuss how HABs form in Alaska waters, how they are monitored and researched, and what needs to be done to mitigate this threat. The webinar will also discuss how recent and future changes in the oceans can affect HABs in Alaska.
