The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (aka StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) beginning strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults to increase muscle strength and bone density, improve balance and prevent falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.

 Fairbanks: Canning Meat in Jars
Leslie Shallcross with the UAF Cooperative Extension Service will present a class on preserving meat in canning jars. This is a hands-on class for adults through the Becoming an Outdoor Woman Program, sponsored by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. 
Students will learn how to use a pressure canner and learn correct techniques and considerations when jarring game meat. Each student will jar 1 pint of meat. 
Class will be held Nov. 4, 5-9 p.m. at the UAF University Park Building, 1000 University Ave. Room 154.

 Circumpolar Connections: A Dialogue on Arctic Food Systems
The UAF Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension will host a series of hourlong lunch seminars. Presentations will focus on engaging people in a conversation about the issues their research surrounds, and will be relatively informal and friendly.  Palmer: Composting for Beginners
Learn the basics of composting, which creates a great soil amendment and keeps materials from going to the landfill. Caley Gasch, a University of Alaska Fairbanks Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station soil scientist, will build a mini compost pile as a demonstration. 
This lunch-and-learn event is available in person and via Zoom. The in-person class will be in Kertulla Hall, Room 208, at the Matanuska Experiment Station and Extension Center, 1509 S. Georgeson Drive, Palmer.

Leslie Shallcross with the UAF Cooperative Extension Service will present a class on preserving fish in canning jars. Participants will learn the proper use and care of a pressure canner and the steps for jarring Alaska fish to make a high-quality and safe product. Each participant will jar one pint of salmon.

Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom. 
Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants. 
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. The UAF Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension will host a series of hourlong lunch seminars. Presentations will focus on engaging people in a conversation about the issues their research surrounds, and will be relatively informal and friendly. The StrongPeople Strong Bodies (a.k.a. StrongWomen/Strong Seniors) advanced strength training program is designed for midlife and older adults by increasing muscle strength and bone density, improving balance and preventing falls. The classes are taught by Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service.

Registration is open for a new Alaska master gardener course, which will be taught over Zoom. 
Casey Matney and Darren Snyder, agriculture and horticulture agents with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the course. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants. 
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state. The prerequisites for becoming a master gardener include familiarity with Alaska gardening conditions and a commitment to 40 hours of volunteer time. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. from Dec. 2 to Feb. 27, 2026, with a break for the holidays. It provides a broad horticultural background and includes Alaska-specific lessons on botany, soils, vegetable production using organic and conventional techniques, integrated pest management, greenhouses, lawns, houseplants, trees and shrubs, flowers and invasive plants. 
Alaska master gardeners are credentialed by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service and are located in communities throughout the state.  Circumpolar Connections: A Dialogue on Arctic Food Systems
The UAF Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension will host a series of hourlong lunch seminars. Presentations will focus on engaging people in a conversation about the issues their research surrounds, and will be relatively informal and friendly.
