DMSC Talking Circle

DMSC Talking Circles provide students with a consistent, supportive space to engage in meaningful conversations about topics that directly affect their academic, personal, and social experiences. Through facilitated discussions on masculinity, mental health, identity, stereotypes, emotional expression, healthy relationships, substance use, body image, academic success, and leadership, students are encouraged to share experiences, learn from one another, and build community. Natural History Museum Lecture

The Natural History Museum of Cal Poly Humboldt is hosting Wildlife Tracking: Modern Applications for a Skill Older than Humanity, presented by Phil Johnston, a professional wildlife tracker and mountain lion biologist for the California Department of Fish & Wildlife where he leads mountain lion research and management in the eastern Sierra, pioneering non-lethal strategies to protect endangered Sierra bighorn from mountain lion predation. Phil is a Track and Sign Evaluator with CyberTracker and Tracker Certification North America and is passionate about making wildlife tracking a more accessible skill to people from all walks of life, as well as improving accuracy in scientific data collection. Free admission. The talk takes place on Friday, Sept. 11 from 7 p.m - 8:15 p.m. in the museum classroom (behind the main museum building). Philosophy Forum

Dr. Andrew Fiala will lead a discussion of the philosophical sources of the American tradition.  This tradition emphasizes engaged and critical citizenship that develops within structures of political liberty.  American history shows that this has always been a work in progress, and conflicts remain.  But the hope of philosophers in this tradition is that despite our differences "we, the people" share significant common ground insofar as we value life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  Fiala will discuss some of his recent work in political philosophy, while reflecting on the challenges of the present moment.  .
