Root, Thread, Stitch Opening Reception
The Root, Thread, Stitch exhibition focuses on Fashion and Adornment across Native American communities and cultures, hosted by the Goudi’ni Native American Arts Gallery. This exhibition opens Thursday, October 15th and runs through November 21st, 2026.
The Opening Reception and Fashion Walk is Thursday October 15th 4:30pm-6:30pm, join us for light refreshments and our Fashion Walk beginning at 5:30pm. Latine Heritage Talk with El Centro
Our intention is to facilitate a fishbowl-style conversation with students, staff, faculty, and community members around the concepts of Hispanic heritage, colonialism, historical memory, and repair. In particular, we hope to debate what Hispanic heritage means when we critically examine the history of colonization and the genocide and displacement experienced by Indigenous peoples throughout the territories now called Latin America, as well as the experiences of Indigenous migrant communities in the United States.
The conversation would invite participants to reflect on governmental frameworks of recognition and inclusion when they are not accompanied by a deeper examination of the histories of oppressed peoples. We also hope to discuss categories of identity, including the demographic definitions of Hispanic/Hispana/o and how these concepts are understood within California and Humboldt communities.

Philosophy Forum
Dr. Andrew Fiala will lead a discussion of the philosophical sources of the American tradition. This tradition emphasizes engaged and critical citizenship that develops within structures of political liberty. American history shows that this has always been a work in progress, and conflicts remain. But the hope of philosophers in this tradition is that despite our differences "we, the people" share significant common ground insofar as we value life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Fiala will discuss some of his recent work in political philosophy, while reflecting on the challenges of the present moment.
