HoS: Introduction to 3D Herbarium

Get familiar with local flora at our "3D Herbarium: Rooted in Discovery" workshop! My Best Lecture: Adolfo Soberanis

Wednesday, October 29, 5:15 - 6:30pm, Veterans Memorial Building (1425 J Street, Arcata), Join the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences for the first event in their new My Best Lecture series, with speakers selected through nominations by the campus community.    Native American Studies Lecturer Adolfo Soberanis will present (Re)imagining (Real)ity, a lecture exploring the complexities of our imaginations and their relationship to both the “natural” and “unnatural” worlds. To remedy our cultural state of cognitive dissonance, Soberanis argues, we can use the parenthetical prefix “re-“; however, not without consequences. Pelican Bay Speaker Series

Dr. Orisamni Burton is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at American University in Washington D.C.  As a social anthropologist, Dr. Burtons research "examines the imbrication of grassroots resistance and state repression. Within this broad area of inquiry, my present work explores the collision of Black-led movements for social, political, and economic transformation with state infrastructures of militarized policing, surveillance, and imprisonment.". A Road Not Taken Film Screening

In 1979, President Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the White House, which were subsequently removed during the Reagan presidency. A Road Not Taken goes back in time to the global oil crisis in the 1970's and traces the fate of these solar panels. With interviews of key players, this documentary centers the solar installation on the White House as a critical prelude to our own era.
