Power behind the Redwood Curtain
A new report from the Schatz Energy Research Center provides a detailed historical account of the energy infrastructure that serves Humboldt County. Power Behind the Redwood Curtain: A History of Electric Transmission and Natural Gas Infrastructure in Humboldt County is written by Schatz Center director Arne Jacobson, and based on analysis of archival newspaper articles and documents, historic aerial photographs, and literature sources.
Jacobson chronicles the close connection between Humboldt County’s existing energy infrastructure and the timber industry. His report then links that history with contemporary opportunities and challenges, ranging from regional economic development and electricity reliability to offshore wind deployment and the State of California’s climate and clean energy goals. Sacred Planet screening with Gulnaz Khan
Join us in the Hall of Simulation in the Library 2nd floor for a screening of an episode of new PBS series, Sacred Planet with Gulnaz Khan, followed by a Q&A session with the creator/host.
Khan is a journalist who reports on the intersections of science and spirituality. In this series, she explores climate change from the perspectives and practices of faith leaders and organizers on the forefront of this issue - from the spiritual traditions of the Arhuaco people of Colombia to the farming techniques in Senegal that are proving to be a scalable solution to desertification.

A Road Not Taken Film Screening
In 1979, President Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the White House, which were subsequently removed during the Reagan presidency. A Road Not Taken goes back in time to the global oil crisis in the 1970's and traces the fate of these solar panels. With interviews of key players, this documentary centers the solar installation on the White House as a critical prelude to our own era.
Barbara McVeigh, founder of the California Carter Initiative, will introduce the film and lead discussion.
