HoS: Birds of the Pacific Northwest
Join us in the Hall of Simulation for Birds of the Pacific Northwest! Participants get to explore the incredible variety of songbirds that live in and migrate through Humboldt County. Using the Digital Wall, Flight Simulator, Anatomage Table, and FireSim display, we’ll listen to local bird calls, look at real migration data, and even take a bird’s-eye “flight” over the region. This workshop is for anyone who’s curious about the birds they see and hear every day and wants to understand them a little better.

A public lecture by Mark van der Laan: Prof. van der Laan is the Jiann-Ping Hsu/Karl E. Peace Professor of Biostatistics and Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley and co-director of Center for Targeted Machine Learning and Causal Inference in the school of public health. He has pioneered methods that combine the flexibility of machine learning with the rigor of causal inference, helping make computational systems more reliable, informative, and useful for real-world judgment and decision-making.
