Sailing 101

Sailing 101 is a multi-day, hands-on course spread designed to teach the fundamentals of small-boat sailing in a supportive, safety-focused environment. Led by Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center's sailing instructors, this course provides the skills and confidence needed to sail a dinghy independently on Humboldt Bay. Participants will learn essential sailing terminology, how to rig and de-rig a Laser sailboat, launch and recover safely, and handle a sailboat under a variety of mild conditions. Take home a bit of the arts with books from the Library. Learn how to find art related books using the Library of Congress Classification and OneSearch in the Library stacks. You can share your favorite artworks and artists with other participants, and show off your favorites at home when you check them out. Literature Lounge in the Library

Learn how to find literature (fiction, poetry, etc.) in the Cal Poly Humboldt Library. You may be familiar with our popular reading selection in the Lobby, but we have many other stories to read in our stacks upstairs. Unlike the public library, we use a different system to organize our books, the Library of Congress Classification. Learn more about how the Library is organized, where to find the Literature section, and spend a little time reading a book you find. Mentoring Youth in Community Research

Young people globally are increasingly engaged in addressing socio-economic problems. At the same time, many of the organizing strategies have focused on mobilizing constituencies such as; environmentalists, people of color or LGBTQ+ groups. Unfortunately, less consideration has been given to allowing more time for young people to self-identify what is important to them. When nurturing more people to participate in civic engagement, especially at the local level, it is essential to ground that process in allowing each participant to ask themselves, “what specific issues most impact me and my community?” Not surprisingly, when given the opportunity, most find answers while discussing similar challenges with other young people who are unafraid to question the social conditions they find themselves in.
