GCC Faculty-Student Book Club Discusses Dungeon Crawler Carl,
This session welcomes all faculty, staff, and students interested in discussing Matt Dinniman's book Dungeon Crawler Carl (2020).
Dungeon Crawler Carl is the first in a rich fantasy Literary Role-Playing Game series, a genre in which video game mechanics are built into the story. It’s humor and character development allows us to talk about the dark side of capitalism, effects of AI influence, resistance strategies, social media, and technological skills on oppressed social groups, the traumatic effects of violence, and more. The book’s themes on power dynamics through the game setting are perfect for showcasing the ways in which economic, social, and racial inequity relate to one another. Faculty will have an in-depth discussion of minority experiences and themes in the book that will allow them to develop assignments and in-class discussions they can use in their classes should they decide to use the book in class.
