Where Are the Filipinos in U.S. History?

Events/Activities Event by Cultural Diversity Program, Guest Lecture + 15-Min Q&A, Dr. James Zarsadiaz is Associate Professor of History and serves as Director of the Yuchengco Philippine Studies Program. His research and teaching interests include urban and suburban studies, California and the U.S. West, Asian American history, and the twentieth-century United States. He received a PhD and MA in History from Northwestern University, and a BA in American Studies and Political Science from George Washington University. Professor Zarsadiaz was a fellow at both the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History and Asian Pacific American Center. Dr. Zarsadiaz has written articles and op-eds for City Lab, National Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, and Washington Post. He has done live interviews on BBC, CBS, MSNBC, NPS, and Southern California Public Radio regarding current affairs and his research. Student Workshops Students will learn how to assess sources for evidence and expertise so as to more convincingly support claims in an argumentative essay or speech. Indicators will be reviewed for two key measures of expertise (a.k.a. authority: author experience that is relevant to the topic under consideration) and evidence (such as documented methods, cross-references, or quotations from subject experts).
