From Weighted Averages to Meaningful Learning: An Introduction to Alternative Grading
Data, Feedback, & Assessment PD
Grading and Assessment CAN Support Learning!
Grading practices have an all-encompassing effect on student learning and classroom environments. In this minicourse, participants will explore the destructive impact of “traditional” (i.e. weighted-average) grading practices on student learning and success. From the ways in which traditional grading reinforces inequity to how it disrupts the instructor/student relationship, participants will look at over 100 years of literature and research to unpack what's wrong with traditional grading practices. This will be followed by a series of activities around the four pillars of alternative grading described by Clark & Talbert. The four pillars are: clearly defined learning outcomes, assessment of mastery, eventual mastery, and helpful feedback. Participants will have hands-on time working through a scaffolded implementation plan with the facilitators, and will walk away from the minicourse with an outline of their course redesign implementing alternative grading…

Building Thinking Classrooms
Engaging Students PD
Building Thinking Classrooms,
The buzz words of "student engagement” can be misleading at times. Students may appear to be learning by complying, taking notes, and finishing tasks but avoid the work of thinking through the material. Dr. Peter Liljedahl in Building Thinking Classrooms describes this as studenting: a performative act students use to satisfy the teacher and avoid the risk of making a mistake or trying something new. This workshop will explore this phenomenon and share some collaborative strategies to make thinking visible in the classroom. Join us to share your experiences of “studenting” and ideas on how to motivate students to engage in real intellectual work.

Gregor Mendel and the Origin of Genetics
Engaging Students PD
Part of the 2nd Annual GCC Mendel Day. In February and March 1865, Gregor Mendel, an Augustinian friar living in what is now the city of Brno in the Czech Republic, presented the results of plant hybridization experiments and his theoretical interpretation of them to the local natural science society. His presentation was published in the society’s journal the following year. No one at the time, including Mendel, understood how groundbreaking his discoveries were. Although his publication was cited 16 times before 1900 (including citations in two books that Darwin owned), no one recognized its significance until the year 1900 when three botanists independently conducted similar experiments and came to the same conclusions regarding the principles of inheritance. From that time forward, Mendel became known as the founder of genetics; his theory is now known as “Mendelian genetics.” Almost immediately, Mendel’s work became embroiled in controversies that have risen and fallen over the past 126 years but have ne…

What we have learned from student grade appeals

Student Voice: What we have learned from student grade appeals
Since 2018, I have served as a member of GCC’s Judicial Board and for the last four years as its Chair. In addition to determining whether a student has violated the Standards of Student Conduct and recommending disciplinary action, the Judicial Board, under Administrative Regulation 5530, provides students with a means to formally appeal their grade.
At the end of every hearing, the Judicial Board panel (two students, three faculty members, and one administrator) deliberates and decides whether to accept or reject the grade appeal. During these deliberations, discussion and recommendations arise regarding what faculty could have done differently to avoid this specific grade appeal. There is currently no formal process for where these recommendations can go.
This session will present what faculty can do preventatively and informally to resolve grade disputes with students. Participants will also get a brief description of how the…
