The Anime Club@CSUMB invites you to join us for the long awaited, very special film screening of A Silent Voice (2016) an award-winning film directed by Naoko Yamada. After transferring into a new school, a deaf girl, Shoko Nishimiya, is bullied by the popular Shoya Ishida. As Shoya continues to bully Shoko, the class turns its back on him. Shoko transfers and Shoya grows up as an outcast. Alone and depressed, the regretful Shoya finds Shoko to make amends. “A Silent Voice” is a moving coming-of-age drama that depicts the struggles of adolescence through its memorable characters and beautiful animation. Urinetown
Urinetown the musical is set in the not-so-distant future. A terrible water shortage and 20-year drought has led to a government ban on private toilets and a proliferation of paid public toilets, owned and operated by a single megalomaniac company: the Urine Good Company. If the poor don’t obey the strict laws prohibiting free urination, they’ll be sent to the dreaded and mysterious “Urinetown.” After too long under the heel of the malevolent Caldwell B. Cladwell, the poor stage a revolt, led by a brave young hero, fighting tooth and nail for the freedom to pee “wherever you like, whenever you like, for as long as you like, and with whomever you like.” A brilliant satire modeled off the plays of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, Urinetown is a wickedly funny, fast-paced, and surprisingly intelligent comedic romp.

Lecture Demonstration on Democracy
The Center for Teaching and Learning presents a Lecture-Demonstration on Democracy. In collaboration with faculty in the College of Business and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Science and the Monterey Symphony Orchestra.
The event supports retention through experiential learning. A lecture demonstration is a format common in the performing arts in which scholars discuss a work and perform excerpts to illustrate or demonstrate concepts. The lecture-demonstration is interdisciplinary, including scholars in music, the humanities, and social science, and thus integrates multiple disciplines on a single, urgent topic: democracy. In addition, there will be a performance by CSUMB's own John Wineglass, Artist in Residence at the Monterey Symphony, at the Sunset Center. All are invited to attend.
The structure of the event includes a 1-hour presentation by scholars and performers, followed by a 30-minute interaction with the audience. A 30-minute reception after the lecture-demonstration…
