Black Freedom in Mexican Spaces

Lecture/Seminar Latinx Heritage Month Event, Guest Speaker: Dr. María Esther Hammack, Barra Postdoctoral Fellow, McNeil Center for Early American Studies, Department of History, University of Pennsylvania, , While histories of Black Liberation in North America often center Canadian freedom destinations, thousands of Black Americans crossed the US-Mexico border to claim freedom in Mexican spaces before US Emancipation. This talk will highlight Mexico's process of abolition, what Mexican freedom entailed, and the experiences of little known freedom fighters. It will offer a discussion of the significance of Black experience south of U.S. slavery in Mexican spaces and the importance of combating the erasure these historical experiences have suffered on both sides of the border.
