MM Lecture Recital: Cole Denton, voice

This project explores gender and sexual fluidity—often underrepresented in art and culture—through the lens of contemporary opera. Focusing on vocal pedagogical challenges and the transformative potential of inclusive casting and storytelling, it offers critical insights into reimagining roles, vocal types, and narratives. Using case studies, academic discourse, and queer theory in performance, the research examines how opera can transcend rigid binaries to become a platform for authentic expression. Ultimately, the aim is to advocate for an opera that reflects and celebrates gender and sexual diversity, inspiring inclusive artistry and social dialogue on the operatic stage. . Ticketed Event? Terri Lyne Carrington

Terri Lyne Carrington, “We Insist! 2025” Featuring Christie Dashiell, 7:30 pm Thursday, February 5, 2026, Eisenhower Auditorium, Four-time Grammy Award-winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and a live band will perform songs from the “post-bop” jazz era in a bold reimagining of the seminal album “We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite.” The concert also will feature singer Christie Dashiell, reprising Oscar Brown’s powerful lyrics and vocals by Abbey Lincoln from the pioneering 1961 release. “We Insist! 2025,” an album of songs co-composed by Carrington and Dashiell and released in June, means to recapture the sonic and sometimes physical urgency of the turbulent 1960s with an expressive, athletic, and assertive vibe. Their tribute calls on Roach’s legacy while expanding its sonic palette with hints of gospel, neo-soul, funk, Afro-Latin, West African traditions, and blues. Detroit '67

DETROIT ’67, By Dominique Morisseau, Directed by Marcus Jordan,   An uprising is brewing in the Heart of Motown.  The year that changed everything for a family and a city, 1967. The world is shifting for two siblings running an after-hours joint to make ends meet. Tensions mount when dreams diverge, their tight-knit community is threatened by an outsider and the streets erupt in violence in this riveting new play set to a driving Motown beat. PG 14, Winner of the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama, this thought-provoking, resonant play sizzles to the soundtrack of the 1960s. In 1967 Detroit, Motown has hit its groove and the Poindexter siblings, Chelle and Lank, make ends meet by hosting parties in their basement. However, Lank and his friend Sly have dreams beyond the cellar shindigs—despite Chelle’s resistance. When Lank then brings home a mysterious white woman, the family’s simmering disagreements explode—as their streets erupt in riots—and life becomes a lot more dangerous.
