Terri Lyne Carrington, “We Insist! 2025” Featuring Christie Dashiell, 7:30 pm Thursday, February 5, 2026, Eisenhower Auditorium,
Four-time Grammy Award-winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and a live band will perform songs from the “post-bop” jazz era in a bold reimagining of the seminal album “We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite.” The concert also will feature singer Christie Dashiell, reprising Oscar Brown’s powerful lyrics and vocals by Abbey Lincoln from the pioneering 1961 release.
“We Insist! 2025,” an album of songs co-composed by Carrington and Dashiell and released in June, means to recapture the sonic and sometimes physical urgency of the turbulent 1960s with an expressive, athletic, and assertive vibe. Their tribute calls on Roach’s legacy while expanding its sonic palette with hints of gospel, neo-soul, funk, Afro-Latin, West African traditions, and blues.

Piano professor Melody Quah presents a recital spotlighting newly commissioned works by composers of Southeast Asian heritage. This program pairs selections from Leopold Godowsky’s Java Suite—a virtuosic homage to his travels in Indonesia—with new pieces by four contemporary voices.
Sidney Boquiren explores the concept of “flow”—from migration to the climate crisis in his work, Agos; Marisa Hartanto’s Dewi Sartika honors the legacy of Dewi Sartika, a pioneer of women’s education in Indonesia; Piyawat Louilarpprasert's blossoming blurs acoustic and electronic sound in a sonic exploration; finally, Emily Koh ponders the concepts of duality and convergence in her piece, forked.
These new pieces were commissioned and recently recorded with support from a College of Arts and Architecture Faculty Research Grant.

Sing and dance with members of the For Good Troupe, directed by Krista Wilkinson, as they perform excerpts from their favorite musical theatre productions. Then join Penn State Professor of Dance Michele Dunleavy on stage to learn some basic choreography and have some not-so-basic fun!
No singing or dancing experience is necessary to enjoy the event. Wear loose, comfortable clothing for easier movement.

"Bach's Lunch" is a weekly Thursday afternoon concert series during the school year, jointly sponsored by the School of Music and the Center for Spiritual and Ethical Development (CSED). Concerts begin at 12:10 p.m. and are approximately thirty minutes in length and are held in Eisenhower Chapel - directly next door to the School of Music (or other facility as arranged).
These popular concerts are brief in order to make it possible for the University community to attend during the lunch hour.
