Winner of the coveted Golden Bear prize at the 2024 Berlinale, Dahomey is an immersive and astounding work of art from Mati Diop – director of the award-winning Atlantics. Taking place in November 2021, the film takes as its subject 26 royal treasures of the Kingdom of Dahomey, which, along with thousands of others, were plundered by French colonial troops in 1892. The Crazy Ray / Paris qui dort (R. Clair, 1924). In this science fiction comedy, a nightwatchman discovers Paris frozen in time by a mad scientist. A delightfully entertaining feature debut for the young René Clair. The 1924 film humorously combines the new art of the cinema with other modern symbols: the airplane and the Eiffel Tower.

About the film: Living on one of the last remaining military bases admist a hedonistic group of French armed forces in 1970s Madagascar, ten-year-old Thomas begins to find cracks in the surface of his family’s blissful existence on the idyllic island. Simultaneously a sensual evocation of discovering the adult world and a sober reflection of what it represents, Red Island weaves together the personal and political in a “visually spectacular and masterful portrayal of colonialism through a child’s eyes”.
