Phillip Bush performs Morton Feldman’s “Triadic Memories”

On the occasion of the centennial of composer Morton Feldman’s birth, Phillip Bush performs Feldman's 1981 hour-long work for solo piano, “Triadic Memories.” One of the major figures of American avant-garde composition, Morton Feldman (1926-1987), was born on Jan. 12, 1926. Feldman's music is more closely related to visual artists of his era (many of whom were his friends and aesthetic compadres) in that it concerns itself more with proportion and scale rather than form as is usually discussed in classical music terms. For most of his career his music stayed within a quiet dynamic range, with small evolutions and recurrances that occur over a great length of time. Late in his life he wrote several works of enormous duration, including his six-hour-long Second String Quartet and the four-hour-long “For Philip Guston.” By comparison, "Triadic Memories" is a miniature, usually lasting 60-80 minutes in time depending on the interpretation. About This Show Artist Bio: Najee Reese is a 26 year old self taught artist originally from Hopkins, SC and currently residing in Columbia, SC. She’s been painting for approximately nine years and has been a full-time artist for two years. Specializing in acrylic paint, she also dabbles in mixed media and watercolor. With every piece that she creates, the number one goal is always to display the beauty and spirit of Blackness. She has a profound love for activism art as well, and as an artist she considers it a great responsibility to tell the story of where we were and where we are going. She’s never afraid of pushing limits and trying new things through art, whether it be teaching herself a new skill or finding ways to innovate what she’s done before. She attributes the greatest parts of her inspiration to her faith. Laura Spong: Timeless

About This Show The Koger Center for the Arts and OTM Gallery are excited to present Laura Spong: Timeless, an exhibit featuring an extensive collection of Spong’s larger-than-life paintings. This exhibit will be on display in the Koger Center’s orchestra level lobby, on the red wall surrounding the exterior of the main performance hall. Laura Spong (1926-2018) was living in the mid-1950s conservative South when she embarked on a journey to prominence in the initially male-dominated painting genre of Abstract Expressionism. In her words, “I love nothing better than to throw paint and lines on a canvas and then solve the problem I have created, the problem being how to pull a coherent painting out of a chaos of lines, shapes and colors. As I solve those problems, I portray my inner journey as I search for a meaning and purpose in life.” Laura was instructed by J. Freeman Sundays @3 Concert Series

The USC School of Music’s renowned music faculty performs fresh and vibrant chamber music programs that pair canonical masterpieces with new works. Research impact extends beyond citation counts. It reflects how your work shapes your field, informs practice, and contributes to broader communities. As there is an increasing emphasis on demonstrating impact, it’s essential for researchers to understand how to measure their work and present those measures responsibly. This introductory workshop will provide participants with a foundation in research impact assessment and the responsible use of metrics. This multi-disciplinary workshop will provide an overview of standard publishing processes with a focus on best practices for graduate students who are considering the publication of a first scholarly monograph. Cormac Cannon, conductor, Director of Bands Cormac Cannon returns to the podium to lead the Wind Ensemble in their performance at the 48th annual USC Band Clinic. Various international influences come together in a program that will surely be remembered for years to come. Dennis Llinás’ La Chancla is a joyful and thrilling Cuban-inspired work, while Gao Hong’s Celebration brings traditional Chinese pipa music to the wind ensemble. Koger Jazz Heritage Festival: Vincent Gardner with USC Jazz Faculty

The second concert of the inaugural Koger Jazz Heritage Festival moves to the Darla Moore School of Business Johnson Performance Hall. Trombonist Vincent Gardner, joined by our illustrious USC Jazz Faculty, performs an exciting program of big band jazz at 3 p.m.  A member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Vincent Gardner has contributed many arrangements to the orchestra. In 2009, he was commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center to compose “The Jesse B. Semple Suite,” a 60-minute piece inspired by the short stories of Langston Hughes. Vincent is featured as trombonist on a number of notable recordings and has recorded five CDs as a bandleader for Steeplechase Records. He has performed with The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Bobby McFerrin, Harry Connick, Jr. The Saturday Night Live Band, Chaka Khan, A Tribe Called Quest, and many others.
