The foundations of the HCD Wind Ensemble Program, Philharmonia Winds and Harmony Winds, under the direction of Alan Francis, provide middle and high school instrumentalists an opportunity to refine their ensemble and performance skills. Harmony Winds, founded in 2011, is an intermediate wind ensemble for middle and junior high school instrumentalists. Philharmonia Winds is a wind ensemble composed of high school and advanced middle school musicians.

Connecticut Youth Symphony

Immersed in a history of excellence, the Connecticut Youth Symphony (CYS) has been providing students an opportunity to study orchestral music intensively with like-minded musicians for almost 75 years. The Hartt School Training Orchestra was founded in 1938 by Rubin Segal and held its first concert in May 1939. The premier youth orchestra of The Hartt School Community Division has undergone numerous name changes including the Hartt Youth Orchestra (1955-1964), the Greater Hartford Youth Orchestra (1965-1989), and currently the Connecticut Youth Symphony. Throughout these name changes, the Connecticut Youth Symphony has retained its mission of providing students with high-quality orchestral performance opportunities.

HCD Performances
In Hartt Community Division's Middle School and High School Flute Intensives, flutists in grades 5-9 and 10-12 will enjoy a week of chamber music, flute choir, masterclasses, workshops, and more! During this week they sharpen their practice and performance skills, gain insight from HCD instructors and guest artists, and perform in a culminating recital. The final recital is free and open to the public.

Young Composers Project Presentations
HCD Performances
Young Composers Project is an intensive program designed for students in grades 7–12 who are passionate about writing music. Students learns composition techniques and approaches to media scoring while actively developing music for film, TV, and/or video game scenes. During this presentation, students share a sampling of their projects with family and friends as the culminating event of the program. This presentation is free and open to the public.
