The imaginative and crowd-pleasing Hub New Music (flute, clarinet, violin, cello) will present a wide-ranging program featuring guest artist Kojiro Umezaki of the Silk Road Ensemble. The Suzuki String Orchestras, under the direction of Emmett Drake, consist of five progressive levels of orchestras comprised of string players trained using the Suzuki method. They are a place to reinforce ideas presented in private lessons and group classes, to learn new orchestral techniques, reinforce reading skills, and be introduced to great music. The foundations of the HCD Wind Ensemble Program, Philharmonia Winds and Harmony Winds, under the direction of Alan Francis, provide middle and high school instrumentalists an opportunity to refine their ensemble and performance skills. Harmony Winds, founded in 2011, is an intermediate wind ensemble for middle and junior high school instrumentalists. Philharmonia Winds is a wind ensemble composed of high school and advanced middle school musicians.

Immersed in a history of excellence, the Connecticut Youth Symphony (CYS) has been providing students an opportunity to study orchestral music intensively with like-minded musicians for almost 75 years. The Hartt School Training Orchestra was founded in 1938 by Rubin Segal and held its first concert in May 1939. The premier youth orchestra of The Hartt School Community Division has undergone numerous name changes including the Hartt Youth Orchestra (1955-1964), the Greater Hartford Youth Orchestra (1965-1989), and currently the Connecticut Youth Symphony. Throughout these name changes, the Connecticut Youth Symphony has retained its mission of providing students with high-quality orchestral performance opportunities.

The Garmany Series will welcome the Verona String Quartet with saxophonist Steven Banks. The Verona Quartet, whose playing has been hailed as “sensational…luminous… pure perfection,” is currently in residence at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Banks, who has quickly come to be regarded as one of the foremost saxophone soloists in the world, is a former Jackie McLean Fellow and Hartt adjunct faculty member. In addition to music by Debussy, Mozart and others, the program will feature the world premiere of a major new piece for saxophone and string quartet by the distinguished American composer Christopher Theofanidis. Theofanidis, a Grammy nominee and winner of the Rome Prize, teaches at the Yale School of Music.
