In 1984 he was named vice chairman of Salomon Brothers, which, eventually became parent of Philipp Brothers. In 1986 O’Malley left Salomon and became chairman and CEO of Tosco, a small oil refining company in California. This led to a sale to Phillips Petroleum, and leadership positions at Premcor (later sold to Valero Corp.) and PBF, a, publicly held oil refining company.
