An Unlikey Social Justice Warrior

What happens when a Malaysian Muslim woman defies expectations and challenges patriarchy? Ani Zonneveld shares her journey from Kuala Lumpur to rural Illinois, confronting invisible lines drawn by religion, gender, and race—all in pursuit of truth and justice. From the music industry to global human rights forums, Ani uses her voice—literally and figuratively—to advocate for freedom of expression, women’s rights, and LGBTQIA+ inclusion within Islam. Whether navigating UN corridors or standing up to extremists, her story challenges dominant narratives and fosters radical empathy. Her memoir is a bold invitation to step out of tribalism and into allyship, using the intersections of feminism, faith, and the arts as tools for transformation. Ideal for educators, students, and readers in activism, gender studies, LGBTQIA+ studies, Islamic studies, cultural anthropology, and human rights. Tuesday, February 3, 2026, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Reap What You Sow Play

Reap What You Sow, Don’t Lose Heart! tells the story of a mother and daughter’s debate about war. Can war ever be just? Jennifer met Sean Golden in an ROTC program at a Jesuit College. He became a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Marines and was killed in Fallujah when their daughter, Ellie, was five. Jennifer, one of the first female fighter pilots in the US Air Force, is now a Major and a drone operator at Creech Air Base in Nevada. When Ellie sees a “die-in” at the front gate, unlike her friends and her mother’s colleagues, who want to kill the deadbeats, she considers the protesters brave, wants to know more, and begins to study history. The Progressives Bible by Dr. Setzer

In her book, The Progressives' Bible: How Scriptural Interpretation Built a More Just America, (Fortress Press, 2024), Claudia Setzer argues that while conservative groups have often appealed to the Bible to support their positions, so too have many progressive voices rooted in the Bible, seeing their struggles in its narratives and characters, and drawing on its verses to prove the truth of their positions. Abolitionism countered pro-slavery arguments with copious biblical material. Women's rights advocates strongly disagreed with one another about whether the Bible was good news for their cause, but some argued that it was. Temperance, a broadly inclusive reform movement in the nineteenth century, employed arguments that reflected a critical, non-literalist stance to the text. Civil rights speakers identified with biblical figures and struggles, infusing their rhetoric with familiar verses. The Progressives' Bible foregrounds women, especially women of color, like Maria Stewart, Septima Clark, and Fannie… Tuesday, February 17, 2026, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Kelly Commons, Room 4C.
