OMSB Seminar Series Bloomberg Workshop - The yield curve: Obtaining corporate spreads using Bloomberg

Speaker: Kudret Topyan, Affiliation: Manhattan College, Time: 1:00 pm - 2.00 pm, Location: DLS 210, Summary: In finance, the yield curve shows the interest rates across different contract lengths with equal credit quality. The slope of the yield curve gives an idea of future interest rates and economic activity. Naturally, the corporate bonds with different default risk levels need a reference yield curve without default risk to construct a curve reflecting their corresponding rates for different terms. This reference curve is constructed using the Treasury rates. The workshop shows how the obtain the corporate default spreads over Treasuries for a given risk class. This is very important for fixed-income research and courses as “term structure of interest rates” is an essential topic in fixed-income. The use of Bloomberg lets us construct alternative subgroups with several controlled variables and enables us to obtain the corporate spreads in alternatives forms such as standard as well as OAS… Organization: School of Business. OMSB Seminar Series - A Synthesis of Behavioural and Mainstream Economics

Speaker: Nobel Laureate Yisrael (Robert J.) Aumann, Affiliation: Hebrew University, Israel, Time: 1:00 pm - 2.00 pm, Location: DLS 300 or can join Remotely (https://meet.google.com/teo-pgsy-mio), Abstract: Mainstream economic theory is based on the rationality assumption: that people act as best they can to promote their interests. In contrast, behavioural economics holds that people act by behavioural rules of thumb, often with poor results. We propose a synthesis according to which people indeed act by rules, which usually work well, but may work poorly in exceptional or contrived scenarios. The reason is that like physical features, behavioural rules are the product of evolutionary processes; and evolution works on the usual, the common - not the exception, not the contrived scenario. Organization: School of Business. Wednesday, October 6, 2021, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM. De La Salle Hall, Room 300 (Capalbo Room).

OMSB Seminar Series - Characterizing Transnational Violence in Sub-Saharan Africa

Speaker: William Foote, Affiliation: Manhattan College, Time: 1:00 pm - 2.00 pm, Location: DLS 300, Abstract: The formulation follows a causal inference analysis among physical and socio-economic variables affecting and affected by acts of political violence, including insurgencies and civil wars. The causal model breeds a statistical model which extends a multi-level (mixed, random effects) general linear model to a family of extreme value distributions, particularly the Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD). In turn and in the structural specification of variates a mixture of exponential and Gamma distributions assists us in interpreting the impact of transnational violence on and with foreign direct, investment, life expectancy, gdp. Bayesian inference is used throughout the analysis based on Hamiltonian Monte Carlo estimation of the joint probability of variates in the model. Organization: School of Business. Wednesday, October 13, 2021, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM. De La Salle Hall, Room 300 (Capalbo Room).
