USC School of Music professor of saxophone Clifford Leaman presents an evening of saxophone alongside organist Charles Tompkins. The program includes Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern? by Naji Hakim and Adoration by Florence B. Price, both arranged by Leaman. Other selections include J.S. Wind Ensemble: Rites and Renewal

The USC Wind Ensemble opens its season under the baton of internationally acclaimed conductor and Music Director of the South Carolina Philharmonic Morihiko Nakahara. Maestro Nakahara leads the ensemble in a diverse and thrilling program that concludes with Karel Husa’s powerful Music for Prague 1968, which memorializes the Soviet invasion of the Czech city. Doctoral conducting student Benjamin Pouncey will lead the ensemble in Re(new)al by Viet Cuong, a concerto for percussion quartet featuring USC School of Music students.

The intimate setting of the Koger Center Black Box provides the perfect opportunity to hear the USC Wind Ensemble in a chamber setting, with works for 10-18 players spanning more than four centuries of music history. From brass choir works by Gabrieli and Husa, to the charming Consort for expanded Harmonie ensemble, to contemporary works by Viet Cuong and Gala Flagello, there is certain to be something for everyone on this unique program.

Renowned conductor Verena Mösenbichler-Bryant (Duke University) and composer Steven Bryant join forces with the USC Wind Ensemble to share the composer’s riveting work for wind ensemble and electronics, The Automatic Earth, a musical depiction of the climate crisis and how technology has transformed what it is to be human. The program also includes Duke University composer Scott Lindroth’s Spin Cycle, a display of breathless energy and virtuosity.
