USC Band Clinic

Each February hundreds of talented high school band students from throughout the nation converge on the University of South Carolina campus to participate in a weekend of music-making and learning. Founded in 1976 by James K. Copenhaver, the USC Band Clinic is among the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious honor band events. This year’s clinic is Feb. 15-18. Symphonic Winds: Intersection and Juxtaposition

Symphonic Winds, led by Dr. Jay Jacobs, presents “Intersection and Juxtaposition. The concert features guest conductor Brenna Curtis and includes works by Barber, Grantham and Bryant. The performance is free, at Koger Center for the Arts. Program: Barber, Commando March Brenna Curtis, conductor, Grantham, Baron Piquant on Pointe, Bryant, Ecstatic Waters. Admission Cost: Free. Wind Ensemble: Celebration

Cormac Cannon, conductor, Director of Bands Cormac Cannon returns to the podium to lead the Wind Ensemble in their performance at the 48th annual USC Band Clinic. Various international influences come together in a program that will surely be remembered for years to come. Dennis Llinás’ La Chancla is a joyful and thrilling Cuban-inspired work, while Gao Hong’s Celebration brings traditional Chinese pipa music to the wind ensemble. The grand finale, David Maslanka’s epic masterwork Symphony No. 4, will inspire audiences with its dramatic, emotional journey, ending in a setting of the hymn tune “Old Hundred” for organ and wind ensemble.
