We are pleased to welcome Rick Hess for an evening discussion on February 19 at 6 p.m. in the Karen J. Williams Courtroom at the Joseph F. Rice School of Law. Hess is the author of Education Week’s iconic blog “Rick Hess Straight Up” and Education Next’s popular series “Old School with Rick Hess.”
Rick Hess will discuss the intersection of law, civics, and the classroom in this important cultural moment. His extensive experience as a commentator on educational policy is characterized by straight talk and practical thinking.

Salvini, former family court judge and current circuit court judge, for an insightful discussion on juvenile waiver hearings. Drawing on her experience from both the family and circuit court benches, Judge Salvini will explore how and why juveniles may be transferred to adult court, the legal standards governing waiver decisions, and the practical and policy considerations judges weigh in these cases. This Lunch and Learn offers a rare judicial perspective on one of the most consequential decisions in juvenile justice.

Work Product Energy: Using AI to Draft Like a Professional, The focus is on how students can move from legal research to structured, professional writing—organizing authority, framing arguments, and refining drafts in ways that meet practice expectations. Students will see how AI can support this process by helping to structure documents, clarify legal rules, and improve clarity and organization, while reinforcing that all analysis and conclusions remain the student’s responsibility. The session will also show how Protege works alongside other Lexis tools, including Practical Guidance, Context, Verdict & Settlement Analyzer, and Legal News, to provide context and strengthen legal writing. By the end of the training, students will have a clearer picture of how attorneys actually use research and drafting tools in practice—and how to begin developing those skills now.

Business Law Association - Internal Transactional Competition
Students will work in pairs and participate in two phases: a drafting phase and a negotiation phase. Each team will be given a common fact pattern based on a real-world transaction, along with confidential information known only to the participants representing a particular side. They will first draft a mock Letter of Intent, focusing on terms that are favorable to their client. Teams will then meet in-person for two rounds of negotiations to finalize an agreement. This is an all-day event with multiple rounds of negotiations and a ceremony at the end.
