"Trouble in Mind" by Alice Childress

A talented and experienced Black actress has been cast in Chaos in Belleville, an anti-lynching play set to open on Broadway. She’s paid her dues throughout the years, playing stereotypical supporting roles in second-rate shows, and is ready for her star turn. Chaos in Belleville, written by a white playwright, might not be quite as enlightened a piece as she’s been hoping for — but that doesn’t mean it won’t sell out. And selling out is the question at the heart of Alice Childress’s comedy-drama. A cast of multigenerational Black actors rehearse under the purview of a white director and stage manager, and as the rehearsal process unfolds, theatre conventions and racial politics collide, resulting in a surprisingly funny yet deeply piercing look at the entertainment industry, To purchase tickets call 815-836-5500 or go to www.lewisu.edu/PLTtix. "I think it’s fair to say that I have gained an even greater appreciation of Shakespeare’s humor than before I attended this show.” — Faith Andra Harris, KCFringe, Breakneck Twelfth Night is a whirlwind journey through Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, condensing the usual two-hour play into a thrilling one-hour performance with a single actor. Rethinking Religion, Secularism and Violence

Thomas Howard, Professor of Humanities and History, Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg Chair in Christian Ethics. Valparaiso University. A popular truism derived from the Enlightenment holds that violence is somehow inherent to religion, to which political secularism offers a liberating solution. But this assumption ignores a glaring modern reality: that putatively progressive regimes committed to secularism have possessed just as much and often a vastly greater capacity for violence as those tied to a religious identity. In his talk, Dr. Howard will present a powerful account of the misery, deaths, and destruction visited on religious communities by secularist regimes in the twentieth century. Everyone Came From Somewhere: A Brief History of Migration to the United States

With the rising anti-immigrant and anti-refugee sentiment that has been so prevalent in the last 10 years, people seem to forget that they too have an immigrant story. Whether your ancestors came on the Mayflower to escape religious persecution or in the last 150 years for economic or political reasons, everyone has an immigrant story. There were groups who were integrated into society easily and those who were not welcomed. I will explore the different waves of immigrant immigration to the U.S. and how laws were put into place to decide who was welcomed! Suzanne Akhras- Syrian Community Network (SCN). International Students and International Education Professionals: Grasping for Community, Security and Belonging

With over 1.1 million international students in the US (Source: Open Doors), international students contributed $43.8 billion+ to the US economy during AY2023-24 (Source: AAU, NAFSA). Historically, strengthening US national security through interpersonal international relationships has been a cornerstone of the US foreign policy, and international education has been one of the US's most important "exports" and diplomatic initiatives. With the recent uncertainties surrounding US immigration policy, student visa holders and university staff who support them will answer a series of panel questions on this topic and the importance of community and finding "belonging" in this new era. The Doctrine of Discovery and its Implications for Contemporary Reconciliation

The Doctrine of Discovery from 1493, united Catholic monarchs in their pursuit of conquering the New World with the Church's mission of evangelizing new peoples. Empowered by this dual purpose, the period of Western colonization began, resulting in the pacification and/or destruction of many indigenous cultures of the Americas. Recent efforts of reconciliation by the Church and some national governments have sought to restore justice and build a new relationship with indigenous peoples. Rev.
