Join the Office of Diversity, Sociology Department and African American Studies Program for a film screening and discussion of Judas and the Black Messiah. In this 2021 award-winning, long-awaited film focused on Fred Hampton, founder of the Rainbow Coalition and the Illinois State Chair of the Black Panther Party, the work and legacy of the Black Panther Party in general and that of Fred Hampton, Deborah Johnson, and other Panthers in refusing state violence through political education, organizing, survival programs, and revolutionary actions are explored.

Sugarcane - Film Screening + Discussion in Honor of Orange Shirt Day
In observation of Orange Shirt Day, please join the Office of Diversity for a screening and post-film discussion of the Oscar-nominated documentary, Sugarcane, an investigation into abuse of missing children at an Indian residential school that ignites a reckoning on the nearby Sugarcane reserve.
The annual Orange Shirt Day on September 30th opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. A discussion all can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation. A day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected. Dr. Shireen Roshanravan; Prof. Huma Zia; Prof. Khaled Alzoubi This session will offers tools for developing the practice of faithfully witnessing, in the sense articulated by Maria Lugones—bearing witness against the grain of power and dominant narratives. Through the lens of Palestine, we will explore what it means to witness realities that have been occupied, erased, and genocided. Participants will cultivate skills in identifying the limits of institutionalized forms of knowledge, reading multiple and conflicting realities, and engage in the "practice of brokenheartedness" (Ann Russo) as a site for collective reflection, unlearning, and deepened ethical engagement.

Through a communal analysis of Louis Dalrymple’s 1899 political cartoon “School Begins,” participants will better understand the U.S.’s historic and on-going racial imperialism, along with the continuing need for the U.S.’s deimperialization. Join the Office of Diversity, Sociology Department and African American Studies Program for a film screening and discussion of Idlewild. This film imagines radically different Black realities, reflecting Dr. Carter Jackson’s analysis of resistance as not only historical but aspirational.
This film screening is part of Lewis University's Fall 2025 "Refusing Silence: A Black Film & Dialogue Series on Resistance and Reclamation."
“Refusing Silence” is a three-part co-curricular film and dialogue series inspired by Dr. Kellie Carter Jackson’s powerful work, We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance. All are welcome to join this intentional space for collective engagement, healing, and intellectual empowerment through the lens of Black film.
