The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) will provide an Emergency and Disaster Preparedness workshop for the Digital Initiatives & Special Collections Division at Appalachian State University. Training such as this prepares staff members to protect collections on a day-to-day basis by identifying and mitigating risks, serving as “first responders” for collections that are damaged, and coordinating recovery from an emergency—large or small—that impacts the libraries at Appalachian State University. The workshop will:
• Provide an introduction to disaster preparedness, response, and recovery including risk assessment and collection prioritization;
• Explain emergency response and recovery methods for paper-based collections materials, photographic formats, and audiovisual media;
• Include a tabletop discussion of a hypothetical disaster scenario; and
• Include a hands-on wet salvage demonstration and activity.

The Office of Rural Promise (ORP) housed in the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) builds partnerships to solve big challenges in rural communities; designs and implements services that impact rural students, families and educators; conducts evaluation and research on its programs to share with the field and recommends strategies and policy. Our team brings together rural leaders and leverages the existing strengths and innovations in our communities. Upward Bound is a federally funded, early intervention program that helps high school students develop the skills and motivation they need to succeed in high school. Students are provided with the necessary tools and resources to enter and be successful in college. To achieve these goals, Upward Bound provides academic support, social and cultural enrichment, and opportunities for personal growth, to qualifying students, free of cost.
