Drop in workshop to participate in a story gathering session for artist Aaron McIntosh’s Queer Kudzu project to create an alternative archive of queer stories representing life in Boone and on campus. This archive will take the form of a quilted kudzu vine that will be added to the artist’s ongoing project.
Queer Kudzu is an art project that proudly reclaims kudzu, an invasive plant species, as a symbol for Southern queer visibility and tenacity in the face of homophobia and regional stereotypes that deny our rich histories. Started by artist Aaron McIntosh, Queer Kudzu has been traveling across the Southern states to gather stories of LGBTQ people through community workshops and from special archives for over 15 years. To date the project has collected over 4000 stories and is shown in museums, galleries, archives and community centers across the South.

Foundations for Teaching the Holocaust

The workshop will introduce educators to curriculum resources developed for the Gizella Abramson Holocaust Education Act and provide training on how to teach foundational lessons about the Holocaust. This year, eight acclaimed writers will visit Appalachian State University’s Boone campus as part of the university’s 2026–27 Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series. The series will feature craft talks and readings in the Plemmons Student Union (PSU).
Afternoon craft talks begin at 3:30 p.m. and offer students and community members the chance to explore writing techniques, habits, and approaches with each visiting author. Evening readings begin at 6 p.m. except on Sept. 17, when Kate Quinn will present the Belk Distinguished Lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Grandview Ballroom at App State's North End Zone Facility.
The Visiting Writing Series is co-sponsored by Appalachian State’s Department of English, The Schaefer Center Presents, and Appalachian Journal. Admission is free and open to the public.
