The second annual Growing Well Conference will offer inspiration, education, and connection for those working to support children and youth with special health care needs in rural western North Carolina.
This year’s theme, “Moving Mountains for People with Special Health Care Needs,” highlights the resilience, innovation, and collaboration needed to improve outcomes for families navigating complex health and social systems.

Rethink Poverty: A Simulation Experience
Join the Beaver College of Health Sciences as we host a simulation to experience poverty.
At this event, the students will take on the identity and work together with their family to live a month in poverty. The Simulated "community" is a large room in the student union. Family units and neighbors' "homes" are chairs in the center. The services they need like banks, schools and grocery stores are tables that line the perimeter of the room. Ann Rose, who resides in Lansing, NC is former nurse and current farmer. In the fall of 2024 Ann became a local hero when she decided to kayak from her farm near Big Horse Creek all the way to the mouth of the Mississippi River "to redefine her relationship with water." After paddling nearly 2000 miles, she arrived in the Gulf Mexico on the same day that Hurricane Helene hit her home here in Western North Carolina. That journey taught her much about the state of our New River watershed and the greater Mississippi basin, the planet, and impacts of climate change, not to mention her well founded trust in humanity. “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” was written sometime between 1599 and 1601. It is widely considered one of the greatest plays ever created. The story depicts Prince Hamlet and his attempts to exact revenge against his uncle, who has murdered Hamlet’s father to seize the throne and marry his mother. Hamlet is considered among the "most powerful and influential tragedies in the English language" with a story capable of "seemingly endless retelling and adaptation by others.” Many works have been pointed to as possible sources for Shakespeare’s play ranging from ancient Greek tragedies to Elizabethan dramas.

Our event is a fundraiser to directly benefit both the Equestrian Team and the Ice Hockey Club.
Our event will have two types of stations. One will be where App State Students, Faculty/Staff, and/or the general public can pay to pie individuals from either the Ice Hockey Club or the Equestrian Team. The other station will have live ponies for a petting area. We plan to have our attendees either pay for one or the other, or both, depending on what they want to do.
We will have tables, tents, and speakers to help make the event more welcoming and to gain the attention of passersby.
