The work in this exhibition documents the complicated process of coming to see and belong to a place often exploited and marginalized. Together, the artists elevate and contribute to familial and collective histories that find sanctuary in conversation with land, our own imaginative processes, and the interwoven communities we are a part of. Though hooks wrote extensively about art and visual culture, as well as her creative and collecting practices, her impact in this realm rarely receives the credit it is due. When the established art world rejected hooks’s criticism, she created a new kind of space that defies typical museum and gallery practices, proving that more is possible.

The creation of Earth Tones as a multimedia project began in 2021, shaped by the stories [that Charles] grew up hearing in Trinidad from [his] mother, a retired urban planner. She spoke of meetings on global warming in the 1980s, which led [him] to ask, 'how could I use music to tell stories, but from the perspective of people?' Charles notes that, "climate is often discussed in terms of economic impact; I wanted to understand its human impact. I traveled to communities across the world, listening to people describe how environmental shifts unfold slowly over generations or arrive suddenly in a single catastrophic moment." Etienne Charles is a performer, composer, and storyteller, who is continuously searching for untold stories and sounds with which to tell them.

Stitching the Natural World: Nancy Hershberger

With a passion for interpreting the natural world in fabric and thread, fiber artist Nancy Hershberger, transforms landscapes into vivid textile pieces. Her process, rooted in raw edge appliqué incorporates inks and paints to create detail, while intricate free-motion quilting brings movement and depth to each scene. Stitching the Natural World showcases Hershberger’s distinct vision of the natural environment. She explains that, "as an art quilter, my practice is rooted in a deep reverence for materials and a passion for the landscape. I am drawn to the tactile nature of fabric, where each stitch and layer holds the possibility of evoking emotion and memory. The work in this exhibition documents the complicated process of coming to see and belong to a place often exploited and marginalized. Together, the artists elevate and contribute to familial and collective histories that find sanctuary in conversation with land, our own imaginative processes, and the interwoven communities we are a part of. Though hooks wrote extensively about art and visual culture, as well as her creative and collecting practices, her impact in this realm rarely receives the credit it is due. When the established art world rejected hooks’s criticism, she created a new kind of space that defies typical museum and gallery practices, proving that more is possible.

The creation of Earth Tones as a multimedia project began in 2021, shaped by the stories [that Charles] grew up hearing in Trinidad from [his] mother, a retired urban planner. She spoke of meetings on global warming in the 1980s, which led [him] to ask, 'how could I use music to tell stories, but from the perspective of people?' Charles notes that, "climate is often discussed in terms of economic impact; I wanted to understand its human impact. I traveled to communities across the world, listening to people describe how environmental shifts unfold slowly over generations or arrive suddenly in a single catastrophic moment." Etienne Charles is a performer, composer, and storyteller, who is continuously searching for untold stories and sounds with which to tell them.

Stitching the Natural World: Nancy Hershberger

With a passion for interpreting the natural world in fabric and thread, fiber artist Nancy Hershberger, transforms landscapes into vivid textile pieces. Her process, rooted in raw edge appliqué incorporates inks and paints to create detail, while intricate free-motion quilting brings movement and depth to each scene. Stitching the Natural World showcases Hershberger’s distinct vision of the natural environment. She explains that, "as an art quilter, my practice is rooted in a deep reverence for materials and a passion for the landscape. Who: The MECC E-Invitational is open to all App State students, with a primary focus on students in the Walker College of Business. There is no cost to participate. Students can register using the MECC E-Invitational Sign-Up Form.
Why: The MECC E-Invitational gives students an opportunity to develop and strengthen their Excel skills through friendly competition while building teamwork, problem-solving, and professional skills. The event also encourages students to connect with peers and engage with the Walker College of Business community.
What: Students should meet at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2015, with the competition beginning at 4:00 p.m. Participants will be placed into teams and compete against other Universities in an Excel-based competition, putting their skills and knowledge to the test.
