The work in this exhibition documents the complicated process of coming to see and belong to a place often exploited and marginalized. Together, the artists elevate and contribute to familial and collective histories that find sanctuary in conversation with land, our own imaginative processes, and the interwoven communities we are a part of. Though hooks wrote extensively about art and visual culture, as well as her creative and collecting practices, her impact in this realm rarely receives the credit it is due. When the established art world rejected hooks’s criticism, she created a new kind of space that defies typical museum and gallery practices, proving that more is possible.

The creation of Earth Tones as a multimedia project began in 2021, shaped by the stories [that Charles] grew up hearing in Trinidad from [his] mother, a retired urban planner. She spoke of meetings on global warming in the 1980s, which led [him] to ask, 'how could I use music to tell stories, but from the perspective of people?' Charles notes that, "climate is often discussed in terms of economic impact; I wanted to understand its human impact. I traveled to communities across the world, listening to people describe how environmental shifts unfold slowly over generations or arrive suddenly in a single catastrophic moment." Etienne Charles is a performer, composer, and storyteller, who is continuously searching for untold stories and sounds with which to tell them.

The creation of Earth Tones as a multimedia project began in 2021, shaped by the stories [that Charles] grew up hearing in Trinidad from [his] mother, a retired urban planner. She spoke of meetings on global warming in the 1980s, which led [him] to ask, 'how could I use music to tell stories, but from the perspective of people?' Charles notes that, "climate is often discussed in terms of economic impact; I wanted to understand its human impact. I traveled to communities across the world, listening to people describe how environmental shifts unfold slowly over generations or arrive suddenly in a single catastrophic moment." Together, the artists elevate and contribute to familial and collective histories that find sanctuary in conversation with land, our own imaginative processes, and the interwoven communities we are a part of. The creation of Earth Tones as a multimedia project began in 2021, shaped by the stories [that Charles] grew up hearing in Trinidad from [his] mother, a retired urban planner. She spoke of meetings on global warming in the 1980s, which led [him] to ask, 'how could I use music to tell stories, but from the perspective of people?' Charles notes that, "climate is often discussed in terms of economic impact; I wanted to understand its human impact. I traveled to communities across the world, listening to people describe how environmental shifts unfold slowly over generations or arrive suddenly in a single catastrophic moment." Etienne Charles is a performer, composer, and storyteller, who is continuously searching for untold stories and sounds with which to tell them.

Asymmetrical explores the warp and weft of their relationship through their different aesthetic styles, though both artists use the metaphors of abstraction in their creative work.
In every ongoing years-long conversation, whether in words–written or spoken–or through visuals, there are times when stream of consciousness prevails. Ideas pour forth seamlessly, effortlessly–tumbling, roaring, pulsing with energy between the participants, punctuated by times of quiet introspection, providing calm reflection and drawing on private inner resources before the conversation renews. Such parleys are evident in Asymmetrical, as the couple reveals their distinctive but interwoven practices, both turbulent and tranquil, through their respective mark-making. Depending on who we are and where we are from, we think about food differently. Contributing artist, Beth Galton, expresses that "cross sections are not new–a cake half eaten shows its interior. When applied to food items which are unexpected yet commonplace, even well recognizable within our food vocabulary, we move past the simple appetite appeal we normally try to achieve and explore the interior worlds of these products." In every ongoing years-long conversation, whether in words–written or spoken–or through visuals, there are times when stream of consciousness prevails. Ideas pour forth seamlessly, effortlessly–tumbling, roaring, pulsing with energy between the participants, punctuated by times of quiet introspection, providing calm reflection and drawing on private inner resources before the conversation renews. Depending on who we are and where we are from, we think about food differently. Contributing artist, Beth Galton, expresses that "cross sections are not new–a cake half eaten shows its interior. When applied to food items which are unexpected yet commonplace, even well recognizable within our food vocabulary, we move past the simple appetite appeal we normally try to achieve and explore the interior worlds of these products." Artists give us a very different way of understanding food. Photographer Beth Galton works with food stylists to show us a playful new way to look at the food we eat.

Together, the artists elevate and contribute to familial and collective histories that find sanctuary in conversation with land, our own imaginative processes, and the interwoven communities we are a part of. The creation of Earth Tones as a multimedia project began in 2021, shaped by the stories [that Charles] grew up hearing in Trinidad from [his] mother, a retired urban planner. She spoke of meetings on global warming in the 1980s, which led [him] to ask, 'how could I use music to tell stories, but from the perspective of people?' Charles notes that, "climate is often discussed in terms of economic impact; I wanted to understand its human impact. I traveled to communities across the world, listening to people describe how environmental shifts unfold slowly over generations or arrive suddenly in a single catastrophic moment." Etienne Charles is a performer, composer, and storyteller, who is continuously searching for untold stories and sounds with which to tell them.

The creation of Earth Tones as a multimedia project began in 2021, shaped by the stories [that Charles] grew up hearing in Trinidad from [his] mother, a retired urban planner.
