Insurrectionist Ethics: Boldly Confronting Oppression

Dr. Lee A. McBride III, Associate Professor in the College of Wooster’s Department of Philosophy, will give a public lecture on his work, based on the second chapter of his book with the working title, Ethics and Insurrection: Boldly Confronting Oppression.  Of the chapter, he writes: "I introduce insurrectionist ethics as a response to oppression. In this piece, I offer a tenable account of oppression, and discuss several ways oppression manifests in the world – sex-based, class-based, race-based, sexuality-based, etc. I articulate the central features of insurrectionist ethics, then argue that insurrection of some sort is needed in the face of oppression. I discuss violence and what it would mean to be non-violent to a clearly oppressive situation." Intelligent Lives Screening and R Word Rally-Spread the Word to End the Word

What is intelligence? Is a 32-year-old man who co-teaches Syracuse University classes intelligent? What about a 25-year-old woman who charms her way into the job of her dreams? How about a 17-year- old young man whose paintings are exhibited at major universities in Boston? Are they intelligent? Would your opinion change if you knew that, as recently as the 1970s, all three of these people would have likely been institutionalized and forcibly sterilized? Dan Habib (Director/Producer) decided to create INTELLIGENT LIVES to explore an overarching question: Can any attempt to measure intelligence predict a person’s value, or potential to contribute meaningfully to the world? The film follows three pioneering young adults with intellectual disabilities – Micah, Naieer, and Naomie – who challenge perceptions of intelligence as they navigate high school, college, and the workforce. Following the film there will be a brief discussion and R Word Rally hosted by UP Students and supports with a banner signing to… Event Name: UP - Film and Rally DegreePlus Calendar.
