Girls Gone WILD

Women Involved in Leadership Development would like to present Girls Gone WILD in efforts to address the portrayal of women in social media, music, and reality TV. The program is an interactive discussion with ladies to present a creative way to introduce the concept of leadership and leadership skills. POSSE Testing

POSSE (Prevent Ongoing Spread of STIs Everywhere) is a program of the HIV & STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) Outreach Section at the Forsyth County Department of Public Health. The POSSE Team provides HIV and STI screenings and education in community locations in Forsyth County such as churches, jails, universities, homeless shelters, nightclubs, and community health fairs. Women's History Month Keynote

WSSU Main Events Sonia Sanchez is a renowned scholar, poet, playwright and activist who has been an influential force in African American literary and political culture for over three decades. One of the most important writers of the Black Arts Movement, Sanchez is the author of sixteen books including Homecoming, We a BaddDDD People, I've Been a Woman: New and Selected Poems, and Shake Loose My Skin. She is the recipient of the Robert Frost Medal for distinguished lifetime service to American poetry and the Langston Hughes Poetry Award. Her numerous other honors include a National Endowment for the Arts Award, the Community Service Award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, the Lucretia Mott Award, the governor's Award for Excellence in the Humanities, and the Peace and Freedom Award from the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. WSSU Main Events The 2019 Social Mobility Summit, hosted by Winston-Salem State University, will highlight faculty research, student involvement, and individual stories. The program offers special insight into the challenges facing the lowest income groups in Forsyth County, NC and beyond.    The academic research portion of the 2019 Summit is spearheaded by WSSU's Center for the Study of Economic Mobility (CSEM). Path-breaking research by CSEM’s faculty fellows as well as other prominent off-campus speakers will demonstrate how WSSU serves as a key instrument in improving social and economic mobility within our own Forsyth county. Attendees will get a wide-ranging exposure to not only reasons, but potential and actionable solutions to change lives most in need, that can serve as a blueprint for other counties across the country.  The conference is partially sponsored by CollegeNET, an organization that created the Social Mobility Index. Presentation: "Understanding the Rising Cost of Affordable Housing: Supply, Demand, and Regulation" , Dr. Ed Lopez, Professor of Economics, Western Carolina University, Edward J. Lopez is Professor of Economics, BB&T Distinguished Professor of Capitalism, and Director of the Center for the Study of Free Enterprise at Western Carolina University. He is past President of Association of Private Enterprise Education and the author of more than fifty scholarly papers. He co-authored Madmen, Intellectuals & Academic Scribblers (Stanford Press, 2012), which explores how political change and economics intersect through incentives. He writes frequently on the economics of ideas, entrepreneurship and politics. Outside academia, Prof. Lopez has worked as a staff economist for the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress, as manager of policymaker education for the Mercatus Center, and as an economics program officer at the Institute for Humane Studies. Safe Zone Training

Safe Zone training is a campus wide program designed to educate students, faculty, and staff on LGBTQ identities and experiences and build their skills in actively building a more diverse campus community that is inclusive of people of all sexual orientations and genders. Throughout the Safe Zone workshop, participants will learn language that relates to the LGBTQ community, identify some of the issues facing LGBTQ individuals on campus, develop skills for being an ally to LGBTQ people, and learn about resources to LGBTQ people on campus and in the community.
