Starting Where the Client Is: An Introduction to Harm Reduction Practice with People Who Use Drugs

Description: This program will provide an overview of harm reduction practices to assist people who use drugs. Dr. Sheila Vakharia will provide a brief history of the harm reduction movement, followed by an introduction to the key foundational values and tenets of harm reduction. She will introduce the Drug, Set, and Setting Model of understanding diverse patterns of substance use as an alternative to moralistic and disease models of addiction. The discussion will promote the elements of the harm reduction approach – one that provides for individualized, client-centered, and trauma-informed care for people who use drugs and those with substance use disorders. The Psychology of Immigration with William Salton, PhD

The “3 D’s” of the Psychology of Immigration: Development, Disruption and Decisions. Summary, Immigration journeys can be either planned or unplanned, but in all cases the process gives rise to psychological concomitants.  This course will train therapists to evaluate the psychological effects that the disruption of immigration can cause, with a special focus on the internal experience of immigrants who are seeking political asylum. Ways to address these issues in psychotherapy will be presented, along with resources implemented by Ferkauf’s program for asylum seekers. Learning Objectives, At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will: 1.Understand how biological and psychological development interacts with immigration experience, 2.Understand how “forced immigrations” can disrupt both intrapsychic and interpersonal lives.
