Join the Office of Mission & Ministry and the Deignan Institute for Earth & Spirit for the 2026 Br. William Cornelia Lecture. This lecture celebrates the life of Br. William B. Cornelia, Iona's first President, by inviting a guest speaker who embodies Iona's caring academic community and mission of service and advocacy, as inspired by the legacy of Blessed Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers.
The 2026 Cornelia Lecturer is Karen Washington. Karen is a farmer, food justice activist, and community leader whose work centers on land, food sovereignty, and the power of communities to nourish themselves. In 2010, Karen co-founded Black Urban Growers, an organization that supports Black growers in rural and urban settings. For decades, she has been at the forefront of efforts to transform food systems by advocating for equitable access to land, healthy food, and the knowledge required to grow it.
