The Real Jews and Pharisees vs Their Portrayal in Christian Preaching

Join Pope Francis's dialogue partner Rabbi Abraham Skorka and Dr. Philip Cunningham of Saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia to explore the relationship of the biblical Pharisees to modern Judaism and their portrayal in Christian texts. Since certain New Testament passages portray Pharisees as arguing and criticizing Jesus about Torah observance, Christians over the centuries have used the word "Pharisee" as an epithet for legalism, heartlessness, and hypocrisy. Often Christians used the Pharisees to symbolize everything they found wrong with Judaism. Jews, in contrast, tend to see the Pharisees as the ancestors of the Rabbis, learned scholars who brought the Torah to everyday life. These opposing viewpoints have been evident in some sermons by Pope Francis in which he warns Catholic clergy not to be like Pharisees. This presentation will explore what current research reveals about the Pharisees historically and how they were depicted in the later Jewish and Christians traditions. After my personal experience with grief, I one day had a thought about the lack of help in the community for those going through the loss of a loved one. After networking and reaching out to those I made connections with, I came up with a game plan to implement my own support group, which has been a complete success and has shown how much of a missing piece it was in the community. Low-fi prototypes are quick and simple ways of creating high-level design/product concepts into tangible, testable objects. Utilizing simple materials, students will explore the process of creating an effective low-fi prototype of their products or services so they can get them into the hands of their users. Julienne (Julie) obtained her B.A in Classics from the University of Illinois (’96), Urbana-Champaign, her M.B.A from Millikin University (’13), and is currently pursuing a DBA from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Prior to joining Millikin, she spent 11 years in the information technology industry during which time she owned two technology start-up businesses and held joint intellectual property with the University of Illinois. She then worked for the Decatur Public School District creating and implementing innovative, experiential summer learning programs and after school programs. In 2013 she joined Millikin University's faculty leading the Arts Entrepreneurship program, and is currently the Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Millikin. In 2018, she also served as the Interim Executive Director for the United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship after chairing the organization’s national conference the previous year.
