Mt. Hood Reads: Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam

Community Events Mt. Hood Reads: Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam  Thursday May 30th, 2024, 7-8:30 p.m. via Zoom and in person at the TLC, located in room AC2553 on the Gresham Campus.   Facilitated by Instructor Tom Fuller   Leave the World Behind, Rumaan Alam’s third novel, begins as a family of four checks in to an AirBNB for a holiday away. What starts as a comedy of manners becomes something else entirely when the owners of the AirBNB return home early with rumors of blackouts in New York City. The novel embraces different genres—satire, thriller, and maybe even apocalyptic literature—to examine the things we hold close. It’s a book I could not put down and one that haunted me long after I finished it. The novel was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award, and a best book of the year according to the Washington Post, Time, NPR, and many other publications.
