Center for Performing Arts Ulysses Owens Jr. Big Band, 7:30 pm Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Eisenhower Auditorium, For fans of hard-bop jams, drum solos and the historic jazz essence, High-octane big band jazz returns to Happy Valley with the Penn State debut of the Ulysses Owens Jr. Big Band. The three-time Grammy Award-winning drummer and his ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. September 10, in Eisenhower Auditorium. The ensemble is known for its dynamic, energetic and improvisational sets, and for its fresh arrangements of songs by Terence Blanchard, John Coltrane, Marvin Gaye and Nirvana. Rhapsody Series: Percussive Treasure

School of Music Join percussion faculty member Dr. Lee Hinkle and colleagues for a recital of unique and explosive new works for percussion. This performance will feature a new work from composer Brianna Wiegand inspired by a Research Grant from the College of Arts & Architecture utilizing unique percussive sounds and influences from the communities where they reside in Philadelphia & Baltimore, respectively. Two pieces by Penn State composer, Baljinder Sekhon, will be heard including his "Distances" for solo marimba (2016) and a brand new composition for prepared vibraphone and electronics entitled “Hope for a Treasure” (2025). The concert will conclude with an explosive new chamber percussion concerto by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Joseph Schwantner entitled “Fast Forward” (2021) for piano, double bass, percussion quartet and percussion soloist. Documentary Film Screening: “Venetian Mysteries: The Lost Music”

School of Music North American premiere screening of “Venetian Mysteries: The Lost Music,” a documentary film about the exciting discovery of Italian Baroque music manuscripts in the Montagu Music Collection at Boughton House, UK.  Marica Tacconi, Distinguished Professor of Musicology and Art History, was involved in this exciting collaborative project, which brought together an international team of musicians and experts. School of Music Juliette Greer (violin), Tim Deighton (viola), Ben Deighton (cello), and Katherine Benson (piano) present two of the most dramatic and thrilling works from the piano quartet repertoire. Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G Minor is one of the composer’s rare minor-key works, set in Mozart’s so-called “key of fate.” Despite its turbulent Sturm und Drang character, the piece still features Mozart’s classic operatic lyricism and ends in the sunshine key of G Major. Brahms’ Piano Quartet in C Minor similarly explores the composer’s inner turmoil, this time an expression of unrequited love and possibly an allusion to Brahms’ rumored love for Clara Schumann.
