Join the Kinesiology Department for their weekly Noll Physiological Research Seminar in 127 Noll Laboratory. This week's lecture will be given by Dr. Philip Millar who is an Associate Professor in Biological Science, Department of Human Health Sciences at the University of Guelph. Dr. Millar will discuss marked interindividual variability in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) is a consistent feature of human microneurographic recordings, yet the physiological significance of this variability remains incompletely understood. Elevated MSNA is often thought to be directly responsible for higher resting blood pressure, yet pooled analyses demonstrate that differences in resting MSNA contribute little to interindividual variability in resting blood pressure in healthy adults. During exercise, we have shown that interpretation of sympathetic responsiveness depends strongly on the physiological stimulus. In static exercise, absolute contraction intensity is an important determinant of MSNA and blood pressure…

About the Series:
Please join us for the Astrobiology Research Center seminar series in Davey Lab 538 or online Fridays from 12-1 pm.
The student organizing committee has lined up an outstanding series of talks for this semester on the theme of Missions & Space Exploration. You will find both experts on missions (comet interceptors, Europa Clipper, Voyager, Cassini, SunRISE, VERITAS) and space biology (human health in spaceflight, space, planetary environments) in the mix. There will be 4-5 talks in person, including this week’s seminar by our own Jason Wright.
Graduate students can take the seminar for 1 credit (ABIOL 597). Graduate student lunches will be organized for in-person visits from external speakers. .

Please join us for the Astrobiology Research Center seminar series in Davey Lab 538 or online Fridays from 12-1 pm.

Abstract: Among consumers in Southern Pennsylvania, Honeycrisp is still very popular, but due to the diversity of apple varieties grown in the area, some novel varieties are catching consumer attention. An apple variety known for its outstanding eating quality is MAIA-1 (Evercrisp), but its downside is a very poor appearance due to sensitivity to russeting, and a stubborn green background that struggles to turn into a lighter hue close to harvest. For this trial, we sought to test consumer liking across popular apples such as Gala, Royal Red Honeycrisp, and Aztec Fuji against two new promising varieties, MAIA-1 and NJ150Cv. (Ruby Rush). Join The Action Club in 127 Noll Laboratory for a presentation from Dr. Timothy Welsh* who is a Professor of Cognitive and Neural Motor Behavior as well as Associate Dean of Research at The University of Toronto.
Dr. Welsh will discuss how humans are not only able to execute a wide variety of goal-directed movements, but are also able to imagine those movements. Motor imagery is the term given to the internal covert simulation of goal-directed movement. Although motor imagery occurs in the absence of overt physical action, there is substantial evidence that the motor system becomes active during motor imagery. Indeed, the areas of the brain active during motor imagery are similar to and overlap with the areas active during physical execution.

Abstract: Amphibians are the most threatened vertebrate group. Among the top threats amphibians face is the fungal disease chytridiomycosis, which has caused declines in over 500 species worldwide. Outbreaks of this emerging infectious disease have decimated amphibian communities in North, Central, and South America over the past few decades. However, signs of resilience are starting to emerge from several of these areas, offering an opportunity to study the mechanisms that generate resilience to disease and other interacting global change threats, across scales. Dr. Walter Herzog, Co-Director of the Human Performance Lab and holds the Benno Nigg Chair in Biomechanics, Mobility and Longevity at the University of Calgary. He will present the 2026 Richard Nelson Memorial Lecture, “Juerg Wartenweiler: It Seems like Yesterday,” on Thursday, Dec. 10, from 3:05 to 4:20 p.m. in 127 Noll Laboratory at Penn State University Park.
Dr. Herzog received his undergraduate degree from the Federal Technical Institute Zurich in 1978, and his PhD from the University of Iowa in 1985. After a postdoctoral fellowship at University of Calgary, he became a faculty member. Juerg Wartenweiler: It Seems like Yesterday

Dr. Walter Herzog, Co-Director of the Human Performance Lab and holds the Benno Nigg Chair in Biomechanics, Mobility and Longevity at the University of Calgary. He will present the 2026 Richard Nelson Memorial Lecture, “Juerg Wartenweiler: It Seems like Yesterday,” on Thursday, Dec. 10, from 3:05 to 4:20 p.m. in 127 Noll Laboratory at Penn State University Park.
Dr. Herzog received his undergraduate degree from the Federal Technical Institute Zurich in 1978, and his PhD from the University of Iowa in 1985. After a postdoctoral fellowship at University of Calgary, he became a faculty member. His presentation, will provide a brief overview of his early life and his interactions with Professor Juerg Wartenweiler, the founder and first president of the International Society of Biomechanics. He will reflect on his student days and the path that ultimately led him to a career in biomechanics. There will be 4-5 talks in person, including this week’s seminar by our own Jason Wright.

Join The Action Club in 127 Noll Laboratory for a presentation from Maria Falikman who is a Teaching Professor of Psychology at Sewanee, The University of the South.
Dr. Falikman will discuss how while the field of motor control has been steadily developing in kinesiology (e.g. Latash et al. 2026), it remained “Cinderella” in cognitive psychology (Rosenbaum, 2005, 2024). Remarkably, this has never been the case in Soviet psychology, first of all in the activity theory, for both theoretical and applied reasons. From the theoretical viewpoint, activity theory postulated isomorphism of physical and mental activity, which allowed it to broadly adopt Nikolai Bernstein’s theory of movement construction as an underlying explanatory framework. Applied research was, first of all, driven by the problem of rehabilitation of movements after World War II.
