Studium Generale: Ceramic Artist Sara Deren
Arts & Culture
Arist in Residence Sara Deren will share her journey with clay, the inspirations and influences behind her current series of work, and what the future of her work holds.
Sara Deren is the artist-in-residence at Peninsula College. Born and raised in Indiana, she was introduced to clay in high school and went on to receive a BFA in ceramics at Indiana University Bloomington in 2023. After moving to Port Angeles in January 2025, Sara looked to the natural world around her for inspiration and found great interest and comfort in clouds. Her current work, a series of clouds, is the physical manifestation of her contemplating the passage of time and dwelling on the past. Cloud gazing has given Sara an easily digestible way to confront the truth of life—that moments pass regardless of how hard we try to hold on. Through making and studying clouds, she is able to process the emotions that come with this truth while playing with the many forms, textures, and colors clouds grace us with on a daily basis.

Studium Generale: Helen Masvikeni Presents "The Plight of a Woman"
Arts & Culture
The Plight of A Woman is a powerful international tour by multidisciplinary artist and cultural storyteller Helen Masvikeni. Through a dynamic blend of narrative, movement, music, and visual storytelling, this experience examines the forces that shape identity, expectation, voice, and liberation—rooted in Zimbabwean culture yet resonating with all people.
While centered on the lived realities traditionally carried by women, the work opens an expansive conversation about the cultural roles, pressures, and inherited stories that shape us all. It is a call to reflect on the systems we participate in, the histories we inherit, and the collective responsibility we hold in, imagining something more just, compassionate, and free.
Designed for universities, global studies programs, cultural centers, and arts organizations, The Plight of A Woman is part performance, part lecture, part communal gathering. It invites audiences not only to witness a narrative—but to locate themselves within it. Participants leave…

Studium Generale: What We Talk About When We Talk About Empathy with Dr. Janet Lucas
Arts & Culture
Join us for Peninsula College's English Composition faculty member, Janet Lucas, PhD, presents “What We Talk about When We Talk about Empathy.”
Dr. Lucas shared the following: I will discuss the idea empathy, how its definition has changed over time, how its most simplistic definition is used to negate it across the academic and political spectrum in the first part of my presentation. In spite of its vociferous foes in public media, however; empathy remains alive and well. Storytelling is key. I will discuss the many ways we tell stories and tell my own story of visiting museums across the East Coast on a journey to discover their role in promoting empathy."
Janet Lucas has taught writing and literature courses at Peninsula College since 2003. She earned her BA and MA in English from Eastern Washington University and her PhD in English from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She taught in Guilin, China, as well.
