Studium Generale presents Native Plants of the Peninsula with Alice Derry

Arts & Culture Several decades ago, Alice Derry and Fred Sharpe began a project to write text for drawings of native plants he had inked over many years. They hardly knew each other when they began, and although they both tried to make the partnership work, they eventually realized that both their lifestyles and their goals for the writing were too far apart to continue. More years passed.  Having already done so much writing and in the intervening time, having learned a lot more about native plants, Alice approached Fred when she retired from teaching and asked if she could use the plates to do her own writing. He was free of course to find another writer to use the plates his way. He said yes. The result so far are three booklets which focus on native plants on the Olympic Peninsula, where Derry hikes and learns. Macbeth, Or the Curse of the Scottish Play

Arts & Culture   This fall, Shakespeare fan Anna Andersen comes to Peninsula College to direct her own adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays: Macbeth, or as theatrical enthusiasts call it: “The Scottish Play.” Legend has it that if you say the word “Macbeth” while standing in a theater, you might just get bad luck. Andersen sums up her version thusly, “This will be a play within a play, about a group of people rehearsing Macbeth who are beset by several challenges. From the absence of key actors, to confusion about the meaning of the text, the group tackles each challenge with creativity and a little silliness. While the famous curse may or may not wreak havoc on the players, they do manage a much shortened and highly dramatic version of Macbeth in the end.” Anna moved to Port Angeles from California, where she worked extensively as an actor, director and teacher for more than 20 years. As Program Director of Shakespeare by the Sea, she had a hand in the development of one of the most… . Friday, November 21, 2025, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM. Off Campus Event.
