The Chapman Labyrinth is based on the 12th century design in the nave of Chartres Cathedral, France. Labyrinths come in many shapes and have been important in a number of spiritual and secular traditions dating back 4,000 years. Schmid Family Lecture: The Purple Tomato
Please join us on Friday, October 30, for the 4th annual Schmid Family Lecture, with guest speaker Nathan Pumplin, Ph.D. CEO of Norfolk Healthy Produce, and inventor of the Purple Tomato. The Purple Tomato is a groundbreaking example of how biotechnology can translate scientific innovation into real-world impact.
This talk traces the journey from fundamental plant science and the development of anthocyanin-rich tomatoes to regulatory approval, commercialization, and consumer adoption. Along the way, it explores the scientific, entrepreneurial, and practical challenges of bringing a novel food product from the laboratory to the market—and the opportunities for biotechnology to create more nutritious, sustainable, and appealing foods.

Burning the Sanctuary: Attacks on Black Churches in the Civil Rights Era South,
Between the Brown decision and the close of the 1960s, Black churches across the American South were bombed, burned, and vandalized with a regularity that has been widely acknowledged but rarely studied systematically. These attacks were not incidental to the Civil Rights Movement; they targeted the institution that supplied the movement with meeting space, leadership, moral authority, and the ritual life that sustained collective action. The Black Church Burning Project, which is the basis for today’s talk, focuses on this understudied form of racial violence and movement suppression.

Now, one by one, friends and colleagues are transforming into rhinoceroses, leaving Berenger to make a choice: take a stand against the rampaging herd or join them. As resonant as when it premiered in the wake of the Second World War, playwright Eugene Ionesco’s brilliantly absurd and comedic response to the rise of fascism and Nazism in Europe last century is a cri de cœur here in this century imploring each of us to resist the call to accept the chaos and fall in line.
