Psychology Guest Speaker Series: Dr. Alfred R. Mele
Libertarianism about free will is the conjunction of a pair of theses: (1) free will is incompatible with determinism and (2) free will exists. By “scientific libertarianism” I mean any libertarian view that is compatible with current science. Some scientists – including, very recently, biologist Robert Sapolsky – have argued that current science leaves no room for free will. In the first half of this talk, I examine the conceptions of free will at work in some of these arguments and provide grounds for thinking that these conceptions set the bar for free will unacceptably high. In the second half, I turn to a bar proposed by typical libertarian philosophers and argue that a certain possible scientific discovery would raise an interesting challenge to this bar.

Using a novel data set of roll-call votes on 1884-1888 emancipation bills in the Brazilian legislature, we find that both mechanisms played a role in building the coalition that eventually abolished slavery.
Bio: Arthur Silve is an associate professor of economics at Université Laval, in Québec. His research addresses various dimensions of economic development, with a focus on formal…

Shelby VanNordstrand, soprano, and Seth Shafer, composer, present r u ok—an innovative new media collaboration inspired by the life and work of hyperpop icon SOPHIE. Blurring the lines between new art music and social commentary, r u ok explores identity, sound, and digital presence in a visceral, boundary-pushing performance. In addition to this groundbreaking work, VanNordstrand will perform selections by the late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, whose ethereal sound world continues to shape the landscape of contemporary vocal music. Following the performance, the artists will engage in a talk-back session focused on collaboration in new music, offering students the opportunity to ask questions and explore the creative process behind multimedia works. Students will also have a chance to interact with elements of the media setup, making for a rich, hands-on learning experience that bridges performance, technology, and innovation.

Darshan Trio
With Art of the Hymn, the Darshan Trio—violinist Vijay Gupta, cellist Yoshika Masuda, and pianist Dominic Cheli—brings a fresh perspective to the piano trio. As a “laboratory for creative experimentation,” their uniquely collaborative approach is grounded in the belief that working with others changes how we see ourselves. Gupta, a MacArthur Fellow and founder of Street Symphony, is known for his visionary violin playing and leadership in music-driven community engagement. Masuda, a celebrated cellist and educator who serves as Director of String Studies at Chapman University, is praised for his artistry and innovative approach. Cheli, an inspired keyboardist and educator, brings spontaneity and vision to each performance. ‘Prosody’ is the idea of bringing alive a melody within an audience member. All three composers of this program embedded hymns in their music - which were, at the time, beloved and communal tunes. Ives’ jaunty, haunting piano trio embeds “Rock of Ages” and folk songs like “Sailor’s…
