Kristallnacht Service
Our event brings together in conversation Marion Ein Lewin and Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat, two exceptionally distinguished individuals to share their perspectives on Kristallnacht, its lessons and legacies. Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat is chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, former U.S. Ambassador to the European Union and Chapman University Presidential Fellow.
This year we continue our tradition of coming together as an interfaith community to remember the pogrom of November 9-10, 1938, often referred to as Kristallnacht. We remember those targeted by the antisemitic violence that swept across Germany and Austria during the pogrom, and we honor the courageous few who dared to stand with the persecuted and defy Nazi authority.

Nick Riggle Seminar
Join us for a talk with Nick Riggle on Tuesday, November 11, at 4pm in Wilkinson Hall 221.
"The Hype is Real" Abstract: Hype is a pervasive feature of contemporary life, and there is an interdisciplinary consensus that hype is a form of exaggeration that has pernicious large-scale effects. But this view cannot account for the fact that, sometimes, the hype is real—hype can target things that really are as good as the hype makes them out to be. Here I argue that hype is not exaggeration but rather a distinctive type of speech act that encourages collective valuing by highlighting sources of value and calling for its own repetition. As such, whether "hyping" is appropriate or not depends on the constitutive values of the practice in which it operates. Hype is appropriate in a practice to the extent that the kind of collective valuing hype promotes serves rather than undermines the aims of the practice, and so it will have very different roles to play in e.g. aesthetic valuing and scientific practice. I end…

The Institute for the Study of Religion, Economics, and Society (IRES) Welcomes Mary Shenk
Join us as Mary discusses "How Does Religiosity Affect Fertility? "
Abstract: The relationship between religion and fertility is well-studied, with the general finding that religious affiliation and/or practice is associated with higher fertility. Yet there is significant debate regarding the mechanisms underlying this pattern. Using newly-collected data on women from five countries (Bangladesh, India, the Gambia, Malawi, and the US), we examine the relationship between fertility and seven theoretically-based dimensions of religiosity including self-rated religiosity, fertility beliefs, how religion guides life choices, public practice, private practice, support from the religious community, and religious openness.
Bio: Mary is a Professor of Anthropology, Demography, and Asian Studies at Penn State. She is a biocultural anthropologist, human behavioral ecologist, and anthropological demographer with interests in marriage, family, kinship, parental investment, fertility, mortality, and inequality. I…

The Future of AI - Dr. Erik Linstead
Making Change: How Collaborative Intelligence Will Shape the Future of AI with Dr. Erik Linstead,
Large language models (LLMs) and other advances in generative AI have fundamentally changed how humans and machines team up to solve problems, create meaning, and make decisions. This shift is giving rise to an increasingly agentic future of work, where intelligent systems act less like tools and more like collaborators. In this talk, I explore how that evolution challenges our assumptions about agency, creativity, and the very nature of intelligence itself. Finally, I consider how, as educators, we must prepare our students for this new reality. To that end, I introduce a proposed curriculum in Collaborative Intelligence (COIN) designed to give Chapman students a competitive edge in the age of human–AI collaboration.
