The Institute for the Study of Religion, Economics, and Society (IRES) Welcomes Romain Wacziarg

Join us as Romain discusses his paper, "Latent Polarization"  Abstract: We develop a new method to endogenously partition society into groups based on homophily in values, using fractional hedonic games as a theoretical foundation. The between-group differentiation that results from this partition provides a novel measure of latent polarization in society. We implement this method empirically using U.S. data from the World Values Survey. For the last forty years, the degree of latent polarization of the U.S. public has been high and relatively stable. In contrast, the degree of values polarization between voters of the two main political parties has steadily increased since the 1990s, and is now converging toward that of underlying values-based clusters. Thus, growing partisan polarization in the U.S. is a reflection of partisan views becoming increasingly aligned with the main values-based clusters in society. Bio:Romain Wacziarg is a professor of economics at UCLA Anderson School of Management and… Organization: I R E S. Open To: Alumni, Faculty, General Public, Staff, Students. RSVP is Required? Skylar Haskard – WE BLUE IT! Campus Celebration

Skylar Haskard – WE BLUE IT!Guggenheim Gallery, Chapman University, October 15 – November 22, 2025, Skylar Haskard’s exhibition WE BLUE IT! stages precarious monuments and improvisational approximations to histories of storytelling, building a bridge from Greco-Roman friezes to American cartoons. Centered on plaster-cast and mannequin reliefs mounted on upended trampolines, the works fuse the pictorial with the sculptural, carrying forward Haskard’s engagement with makeshift materials. Here, the trampoline becomes wall, portal, and stage at once: an unstable architecture that holds figural fragments like embroidery on canvas. These recent works, the most pictorial of Haskard’s to date, echo antiquity’s depictions of mythic scenes and recall half-beast, half-human figures from Roman Gigantomachy friezes. Abstracted and re-imagined using exaggerated features, dentures, dog snouts resembling Disney’s Goofy, and turn-of-the-century laborers carrying shovels, rakes, bones, and found objects. The image of… Organization: Art, Department Of. Open To: Alumni, Faculty, General Public, Parents and Family, Prospective Students, Staff, Students. Wednesday, October 15, 2025, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Based on an original screenplay co-written by Farhad Safinia and Mel Gibson (who produced and directed the film), Apocalypto is set in the Yucatán around the year 1511. The film depicts the epic ordeal of a young man named Jaguar Paw, a late Mesoamerican hunter, and his fellow tribesmen, who are captured by an invading force during a raid on their village. They are brought on a perilous journey to a Mayan city for human sacrifice at a time when the Maya civilization is in decline. The film is notable for its casting (all of the actors are Indigenous and Mexican) and for the fact that all dialogue is in a modern approximation of the ancient language of the setting, and the Indigenous Yucatec Mayan Language is spoken with subtitles. Apocalypto was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film… Organization: Smith Institute. Skylar Haskard – WE BLUE IT! Opening Reception

RSVP is Required? Minhua Yan Seminar

Join us for a talk with Minhua Yan on Monday, October 20 at 4pm in Wilkinson Hall 221.   "CAN 'BAD' NORMS PERSIST?"   Abstract: Social norms are unwritten rules that guide human behavior and social interaction. They play a central role in promoting cooperation and maintaining cultural diversity. Yet because social norms pressure people to do what others do, “bad” norms may also persist. In this talk, I present insights from a mathematical model and a field study that together examine whether and how “bad” norms can persist. The model challenges the idea that arbitrary or harmful norms can be maintained solely by social pressure. It shows that norms with continuously varying behavioral options cannot be maintained at ecologically or psychologically suboptimal equilibria, suggesting that norms adapt more readily than previously assumed. The field study, conducted among the Derung people (small-scale horticulturalists in Yunnan, China) finds that they continue to follow a co-farming harvest division norm… Organization: Smith Institute. Department of Psychology Guest Speakers

The Department of Psychology is excited to welcome our October guest speaker, Dr. Kenny Easwaran. Dr. Easwaran will be presenting his talk: Puzzles: Epistemology as Art. Abstract: Philosophers have long assumed that the concept of "knowledge" follows a nice logic, but in recent decades, Timothy Williamson has argued that there are important limits to this logic. He argues that not only does this logic generally fail, but there is no restricted domain that forms a "cognitive home" in which it holds. I argue that puzzles (jigsaws, crosswords, sudokus, etc.) form such a "cognitive home". The philosopher Thi Nguyen has recently argued that games are an art form whose medium is the agency of the player. I build on his proposal to argue that puzzles are an art form whose medium is the player's knowledge. I argue that we can use the strategies of puzzle constructors to better understand when Williamson's limitative theses do and don't apply.   Bio: Kenny Easwaran is a professor in the department of Logic… Organization: Psychology.
