Kirun Sankaran Seminar

Join us for a talk with Kirun Sankaran on Tuesday, December 2 at 4:00pm in Wilkinson Hall 221. "Alienation Arguments" Abstract: It's often argued that capitalism is alienating, because markets' reliance on extrinsic incentives, instrumental valuation, and commodity exchange make our social and political order confront us as something hostile or out of step with important, reflectively-endorsed ethical values. I argue that these arguments overgeneralize. The alienating features of markets allow them to overcome the information costs and free-rider problems that undermine large-scale cooperation. This is also true of bureaucracy, which is both historically and theoretically the most common alternative to market organization. In both cases, scalability explains alienation. Often, alienation theorists turn to democracy as a paradigmatically non-alienating governance mechanism. However, the features that make democracy non-alienating also leave it vulnerable to information costs and free-rider problems.… Organization: Smith Institute. Open To: Alumni, Faculty, Students. RSVP is Required? No. Tuesday, December 2, 2025, 4:00 PM – 5:15 PM. Wilkinson Hall Classroom 221.

The film focuses on the (largely fictional) exploits of the Spanish soldier, Lope de Aguirre, who led a group of conquistadores down the Amazon River in South America in search of the legendary city of gold, El Dorado. Shot on location in the Peruvian rain forest, the film has become famous for the immense difficulties Herzog, cast, and crew overcame to complete it… Organization: Smith Institute. Book Talk by Mark Pennington

Join us as Mark Pennington discusses his new book, Foucault and Liberal Political Economy: Power, Knowledge, and Freedom on Thursday, December 4 at 4pm in Wilkinson Hall 221.   This book is the first to comprehensively engage the ideas of the French social theorist and philosopher Michel Foucault from within the tradition of liberal political economy. The first part demonstrates important commonalities between Foucault’s ideas and those of a neglected ‘postmodern’ stream in liberal political thought. These ideas draw on a social theory emphasising a culturally situated individualism; a philosophy of science highly sceptical of socio-economic ‘scientism’ and ‘expert rule’; and an understanding of freedom as an open-ended process of ‘self-creation’ in the face of cultural power relations—a freedom threatened by alignments between state power and more decentred manifestations of power. Part II deploys the tools of Foucault’s critical social theory and those of a postmodern liberalism to problematise four… Organization: Smith Institute. Open To: Alumni, Faculty, Students. Glassell,   Join us as Avi Acharya discusses "How Polarization Ends? " Abstract:  America is experiencing a period of intense political polarization, with the two major parties standing further apart on policies today than at any other time in the last hundred years. But this is not the first time in American history that politics have been polarized. Two other periods of profound polarization were the period 1860-1928, roughly corresponding to the Third and Fourth Party Systems, and the period 1790-1824, roughly corresponding to the First Party System.  These periods, both of which ended with new party systems replacing the old ones, provide us the opportunity to closely examine the processes by which polarization ends. When we look at these instances of polarization ending, what do we learn? What should we expect about how… Organization: I R E S. Open To: Alumni, Faculty, General Public, Staff, Students. Faculty Recital - Shelby VanNordstand

Shelby VanNordstrand, soprano, and Seth Shafer, composer, present r u ok—an innovative new media collaboration inspired by the life and work of hyperpop icon SOPHIE. Blurring the lines between new art music and social commentary, r u ok explores identity, sound, and digital presence in a visceral, boundary-pushing performance. In addition to this groundbreaking work, VanNordstrand will perform selections by the late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, whose ethereal sound world continues to shape the landscape of contemporary vocal music. Following the performance, the artists will engage in a talk-back session focused on collaboration in new music, offering students the opportunity to ask questions and explore the creative process behind multimedia works. Students will also have a chance to interact with elements of the media setup, making for a rich, hands-on learning experience that bridges performance, technology, and innovation.
