Shelby VanNordstrand, soprano, and Seth Shafer, composer, present r u ok—an innovative new media collaboration inspired by the life and work of hyperpop icon SOPHIE. Blurring the lines between new art music and social commentary, r u ok explores identity, sound, and digital presence in a visceral, boundary-pushing performance. In addition to this groundbreaking work, VanNordstrand will perform selections by the late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, whose ethereal sound world continues to shape the landscape of contemporary vocal music. Following the performance, the artists will engage in a talk-back session focused on collaboration in new music, offering students the opportunity to ask questions and explore the creative process behind multimedia works. Students will also have a chance to interact with elements of the media setup, making for a rich, hands-on learning experience that bridges performance, technology, and innovation.
